What do you like in a turn based battle system?

As I'll be getting a little bit more free time and working closely with Vanit in the coming months, I'm curious to get some input from you my "audience".

What are qualities that you guys like in a turn based battle system?
I'm conflicted as to whether I should try to come up with a system that's completely original, or just do a spin on the conventional ATB battle system.

For those who are interested in looking at what my second draft of my game's battle system in-particular looks like, can check it out here: https://www.box.com/s/yyknjd8s6ypvfvk0bbpb

Otherwise just let me know what qualities of turn based battle you enjoy.
Thanks!

I was actually very impressed with the winding of your cliffs. It inspired me to do that map. I'm going to try to do something like that in my style. And thanks man. ~Sion

Dormant Sky

It's not dead. It's just been difficult to find time for it lately.
My main concerns right now are finding the money to get the battle sprites,
and CBS done. If me and Vanit can team back up this Summer, I can release something soon. My thing with Dormant Sky is I refuse to release it until my vision for the game is realized. Call it the Versus XIII of Rpgmaker games.

There are several new things I could have shown off, but because I don't want to hype people when I don't have any release dates in mind, I've kept those updates to a minimum. If people would actually donate to an Rpgmaker Kickstarter page, I'd do it.

If ever, I do quit the game. I will release what of the it there is.

My god, what the hell did I even create here!? I confused myself making this. @_@;;

Those are some sexy cliffs there, friend.

Boing.

Well I Made a makeshift Tales battle system but it's not fit to release in a game.

Congratulations. I personally feel that having a custom system in RM2k3 is more rewarding because of how innovative and creative they usually are (The added difficulty in making them may also call for their respect.) But well executed systems in RMXP are fine as well. Hopefully you can show off some stuff of your game soon! ~Sion

What motivates ya?

This is something I've had an issue with since I began making games. To this day, I've never fully completed a project. My current project makes it very easy to want to quit because of everything I have envisioned for it. But I've found, that just doing what I can here and there to progress the game gets me going. Knowing I've added another cutscene or town, normally keeps me in the fray for that much longer.
I also can't work unless I have classical or VGM playing. It normally has to be the music that plays for the specific part of the game I'm working on as well.
Heh, call me strange.

Dormant Sky Battle System

I just want to start by thanking you guys for your input. I was starting to think the system was uninteresting, haha.

@Thiamor: I already have around 3 sequences in the game's first 20 minutes that go over the basic elements of the battle system. The first is in The game's First battle. The second is a optional tutorial shortly after. The third is in the game's first mid boss sequence.

As far as Experience. Leveling up, grants the characters stat growth. Ability Points gained from Leveling and the defeat of enemies, is what really builds the characters through the Tech Menu, where the player teaches moves, and further upgrades certain stats based on the characters elemental skill tree.

@LockeZ: I really enjoyed your run down. I'm glad the system is easily comprehensible. I see how it would be difficult to make a good strategy with the current concept I have around the "All" skills. I'll have to tweak it. I do like your ideas about the Field Leader, and I'll definitely look into that.

Hopefully I'll have a newer mockup of the Battle System soon, as I've recently hired a spriter. Any further ideas are definitely welcome.

Do you guys think the Elemental System I have surrounding Enemies is fair?

Really now? No, a friend of mine "MusicalSwordsman" did these awhile back. ~Sion

Dormant Sky Battle System

Hey guys, Sion here. Gosh I almost feel foreign around here.
For those that don't know me, I've been working on a project called Dormant Sky.
Though things are moving a little slow now due to college, I do find time to put into it. A few months ago I finally wrote up a Battle System concept for the game that Vanit soon plans to implement. I just want to know what you guys think of what I have.

It is very much inspired by the likes of Chrono Cross.

Thanks in advance. I look forward to your comments.

Not quite. It was very much inspired by her map though. ~Sion
