Review Vote Guidelines
1/1.5 - so horribile I will not mention it. No one would like this trash.
2/2.5 - bad but with some good qualities or good
but with many bad flaws. Could have been worse and some people may like it anyway.
3/3.5 - from decent to good games. This is what I normally expect: entertainment. Some people may like it more, others less but it's ok!
4/4.5 - exceeded my expectations. These are must play for everyone.
5 - Rpgmaker Nirvana

*NOTE*: event games/jam submissions and other games that were developed in a very short time or with other restrictions get a rating bonus (usually +0,5), you are warned!

Uhmmm weird but I do not think I have an old version... I should check! Anyway yes, the problem is that the boss gets "revealed" going out of the shadows and then you cannot interact anymore if you were defeated by him. I wonder if that happens also with *that other boss*!!
I've tested the version I got on my computer and there at least seems fixed... should try as soon as I have some time the latest build uploaded here... T_T I'm seriously hoping I didn't upload the wrong one by mistake!

I really appreciate that you reported it!
Uh weird! I will check later, dunno if I still have the savegame, or I will try recreate it!

Ok, I checked and ...uhm it's a mystery! I clearly played last version and I remember having that issue but looks like there must be some precise way to recreate that... weird. Anyway that can somehow happen, I mean that I had to restart the game. Well nevermind.

LanVodis Review

Start to finish I think I spent 8 or 9 days on LanVodis, it was a fairly casual and spontaneous little project, although many of the ideas in it are older. If you've played any other games with unusual or restricted approaches to world maps and navigation, I'd love to hear about them - I'm really interested in world maps right now and really curious about what other designers have tried to do with them (you can bet I looked up Ishar right away).

On that note, have you played GeaSaga? It's my favorite KA•IN WORKS game so far. It's simple, but I really like its style and vibe. AND it has a weird world map! Actually, I hadn't thought about it before, but it has a kind of "fog of war" thing going on, too. Maybe he's been an even bigger influence on me than I realized...

Oh yes, it was made in a really short time, as I guessed! Now I do not remember but I played one or two games that had sections with restricted visuals and a similar approach for navigation... but yeah these were parts inside larger games.

Oh yeah, Ishar! Very old game. This was the map, as you can see it has only the starting point and was NOT player friendly at all. But I love the game for its wonderful graphics (portraits are nice and it's one of the first game that was not restricted in a dungeon but had a sort of open world with dungeons)

Isharmap

GeaSaga? Uhm I have never played that one, I should try it (and review it!) that too then!

Oh, whoa!
Thanks a lot for the thoughtful review!

I'm glad you like your time with the game! At times, I feel really clumsy myself when it comes to work on a specific concept and this one in particular was a bit divisive game play-wise so I have to admit it fills me with joy knowing that at the very least you clearly knew what I was going for, regardless of how it came out as a whole at the end.

I'm a bit concerned with the bug you pointed out, because I remember Cap pointed me out the same issue the year it was released and I updated the game believing I had fixed it... so assuming you played the most recent version I guess I will have to dig a bit and find that silly sucker somewhere!

Still, I'm relieved you easily overcame it, either way!
^^ And of course, thank you so, so much again for giving this little project a chance!

For the rest, great game! I hated the Fomorian, but I liked the rest and I especially loved the ending!

Wow, what a thoughtful review! I really enjoyed hearing your perspective - thank you so much for giving my game a chance and sharing your thoughts on it.

PS. I also enjoyed your review of Flesh, which happens to have been a big influence on LanVodis' presentation. I'm glad that game clicked with you too!

Yes! This is a nice idea, in how much tim you made it? I do not think it was indicated. Anyway I played few games like this one, or similar attempts are one or two at best!
I'd be curious to see other reviews/opinions about this game, due to its original concept.

Oh I liked Flesh despite its limitations/bug, and despite the ratings I liked it more than Heroic Value (yeah, this is because it's less polished but atmosphere and setting were really charming).

YES! I liked it a lot and I was aware of the deadline, in any case I had fun I mean, combat may be difficult but it's not terrible or too hard as long as you know what you need to do. At first I won wasting many potions, then I retried (it was, you can guess it... the Leviathan!) and I was able to win easily without wasting resources. Same happened when you play as Iora, since she has a totally different set of abilities and took me... three tries I think!

Oh I assumed that there is no way to find the item in the forest, since I tried that but... the place is extremely lethal so I set to use the safest solution of selling lots of fishes and buy the 99 seaweed... it's just 2475 gold if I am right.

Uhm it seems that I missed the other games, anyway this was a good entry for the contest. Really.

Whoa. The Leviathan was actually supposed to be unbeatable without an item that makes the battle easier. Solving the forest's maze gets you a quest item to obtain said special item, which reduces Leviathan's healing and disables her special abilities. If you managed to defeat her without it, many congrats to you! It's not supposed to even be possible. Note to self to make things like that more obvious.

Thanks again for the review!
I did that not once, but twice and without upgrading the equipment! Hehe it wasn't even the hardest battle (I mean it's 1 vs 1!), I just used bleeding+poison, and before it started healing I kept using the ability that makes it skip his turn, so this can be done!
The forest was too scary for me (I mean there are really few ways to heal)! Lol
Ah, the bleeding+poison combo does work wonders. Maybe the Leviathan should be buffed hmmmmmm.....

You can actually craft a potion from Victor's workshop that will make you immune to the forest's spore mist to make exploration easier! We'll make it more clear in a later update since it might be a little hidden away. In earlier versions the 'feesh' used to give full health when consumed, so maybe we'll also just restore that feature for healing when outside battle.

I knew I should not have neglected crafting lol!

Thank you for the review! I'm happy you liked it enough to give it four stars!

The making of the game was tough, having many things scrapped and remade multiple times or simply rushed due to the deadline of the event (the orcs blocking the path was also just a rush-job plot device to force players to explore all of Svartalle's maps). We didn't have anyone to beta-test so that may be why the combat ended up being kind of difficult despite the game supposedly being casual. Developer bias, probably. Admittedly we probably spent too much time having fun making the fishing simulator instead. The price of potions was insanely expensive on purpose though, to urge players to craft them instead. Also because markup prices and taxes in Svartalle are insane - which is a real-world problem! We went crazy on the save points because an earlier game we worked on together had a problem of people dying and losing way more progress than should be acceptable. In this game, it probably wasn't as necessary though.

I have to agree the weirdly differing art styles for some characters are too noticeable. FT,FT was rushed a lot compared to other games me and CrazyBabi worked on. Assets like the Seamstress and Victor were reused from artwork I've made a while back and even puzzle elements like the forest map are reused from CrazyBabi's old projects. I'm glad none of them was too much of an issue though!

As for the mermaid quest, you can only either buy the entire seaweed stock or bring the item from the forest. We wanted to make the game as linear as possible, so there are not really any branches other than that optional thing with the Leviathan (which I see you managed to do, so I'm glad to know the puzzle wasn't too complex). The story is a delicate problem because I'm still having trouble with writing too much or too little. Given the shortness of the game, in the end, I had to squeeze everything in and losing the chance to explain everything. Maybe in a later game, we could try to expand it. Having people enjoy our work is surely a good incentive to do that! Thank you for playing our game!
