RPGs... or other games I should buy.

I have just found a magazine that basically works like Little Nickel (eBay newspaper style,) and a bunch of people are selling vintage games and systems for cheaper than I can find online.

Particularly ones for SNES, and a Sega Genesis system which includes Sonic 1 + 2.

This is what I have for SNES already:
Super Mario World (I think Yoshi's Island)
Donkey Kong
Super Mario Kart
Zelda: Link To The Past
Street Fighter 2: Turbo
Star Fox

An idea of what I want:
Super Mario All Stars

Also: I probably would want to pick up X-Men for the Sega Genesis if I end up buying the system. What are your other suggestions? Not entirely limited to RPGs!

Also: Is Paper Mario worth picking up a used DS for? (I have never played Paper Mario, and have wanted to since seeing it for the first time.)

Game Length

Games that have 10-15 hours of gameplay the first time through and 3-4 hours of new stuff a second time through are just about perfect. Generally though, most games aren't good enough to hold attention for that long in the amateur department.

RPGS... you've beaten

Sounds like FFT is the FF game for you, son. Random battles don't really matter if you play your cards right.

Most of the time I didn't read non-staff reviews on websites because I wasn't "assured" of their quality. Because someone actually works for the site I'm more inclined to believe that they don't just post "this game sux cuz it uses alex". It's an assurance of quality thing, to me, and provides an easy way to decide if something is worth my interest if I'm on the fence or not because I've read said person's reviews before.
Every single review on this site gets passed through moderation. You'll never see a review like that.
Oh okay nevermind. We should probably bribe some dedicated reviewer to do a lot of reviews for the site. Still need a standard "review to read", here. Can iishenron write complete sentences and add numbers together?

How do you people remember all of these games? :-\

Dragon Fantasy

Screenshots taken from the rm2k(3) editor database are aggravating to look at for me, even large ones like the world map. Other than this, I like the look a lot.

Indie games that have impacted you

I really liked Crossbone, for some reason. I mean, come on--there's old men summoning birds, mechanical spell generators, pirates, freelancers wielding anchors, giant robots and special abilites with really cool names (i.e. Storm Warning, Shark's Prayer, etc.) Plus custom graphics, decent music, and a really funny introductory boss battle. What's not to like? Wildcard was a good game, too, but not as well known. The graphics and music are all RTP, but every character learns lots of special abilities and the game itself is quite long and really fun.

Oh, and The Way has one of the greatest stories in any freeware game ever. So does A Blurred Line, but it isn't complete.
Crossbone has a base of RTP graphics (starting town and various objects along with several NPCs) but a majority of the novelty characters, environment, and cutscenes are custom created.

The problem with rating story "high" on the list of priorities is that most people in the amateur game making community very glaringly suck at storytelling--so no matter how much thought they do end up putting into it, it turns out how it's going to turn out. People generally perform their best for the story aspect no matter what sort of RPG project--there's no need to even put it in the list. It's an X factor.

The stories of most pro RPGs suck too. There are way more good RPGs with gameplay>story than story>gameplay.
Yet because of a general lack of "story collaboration" commercial rpg's will always have a higher standard! I never see a shortage of "coders wanted" help topics. It's very rare I see someone post a topic saying more than "give me ideas" regarding to story.

Wow, I can't believe how low some of you guys rank story in relation to an RPG.
The problem with rating story "high" on the list of priorities is that most people in the amateur game making community very glaringly suck at storytelling--so no matter how much thought they do end up putting into it, it turns out according to their writing ability. If there is one skill/talent in the amateur game making community that gets the least work or improvement over time, it is storytelling--the concept itself is difficult to grasp and you generally have to acquire an affinity for it through reading. Everything else you can grab from tutorials, practice, and work. People generally perform their best for the story aspect no matter what sort of RPG project--there's no need to even put it in the list. It's an X factor.
