Video game genres that will eventually die in the coming years.
author=kentonaauthor=RaekwonCompared to what?
As I was saying, these genres are fading, and as Prexus said, there is lack of innovation in many areas.
There has been an explosion of innovation since my days as a young lad gamer. And it seems like the developers continue to push the envelope these days.
Automobiles - to further my own analogy - are another industry in which innovation has been explosive. Solar power, electric, hybrids, biomass fuels~...
So I guess that's a fundamental change now isn't it, if these cars aren't all using internal combustion

yeah actually look at that car. automobiles have been fundamentally the same for at least 50 years. what you're looking at are aesthetic changes
And you don't see how this applies to game genres? hmmmmmmm
do you think the engine in that car is the exact same engine as a modern car has? that's not an aesthetic change y'all

I guess tigers aren't covered with fur and walk on all fours and have tails and fangs
OH WAIT YES THEY DO
this is a fun game

Saber tooth tiger are extinct. You basically just said that since Tigers came from Sabers, sabers still exist. It is very simple how this works. Your looking to much into it. Cars are not extinct, cars have been the same for years, all cars have operated the same way. The tigers are different. That's why Sabers are EXTINCT.
All oaks are trees but not all trees are oaks
The "sabre tooth" tiger is extinct but not all tigers are extinct
Cars have not been the same for years holy shit what crack are you smoking

That was horrible. Cars still exist. You ignored the very clear point.
No, they were talking of it those platformers that way because they were MORE THAN ONE GENRE. There never was a change.
Like I said, Evolution can replace at times.
How do you manage to continue to not make sense?

Cars exist but in a very different (yet still similar) form
Tigers still exist too, just not in the same form

Evolution replaces...
So the cars of today aren't cars because they are so different from original automobiles? I'm not buying this. Games are a combination of features and qualities, not definably different DNA sequences.
I remember in the PS2 vs. Gamecube war. People were saying, THOSE PS2 PLATFORMING GAMES AREN"T REAL PLAT-FORMERS, THEY ARE SHOOTING GAMES. I am sure you were in that same crowd when it happened.
I have no idea what you are talking about and where your self-assuredness on this particular point came from. And this all goes back to semantics. They're not platformers as those people knew platformers. The definition of "platformer" can change without the entire genre "dying," because the IDEA of what makes up the genre ITSELF changes with time. This is pretty much fact

As I stated above, FPS and 3rdPS are not genres. They are perspectives. They can be applied to any Genre, such as RPG (Oblivion/Mass Effect), Shooter (Doom, Call of Duty), Action Adventure (Legend of Zelda, God of War) etc.
Expanding into my last comment: War Game is a flavor, not a genre. Call of Duty is a war game. Halo is a war game. Warcraft is a war game.

author=Beakerauthor=narcodisWargames. Used to be an actual genre back in the day, but now, at best, is described as a subgenre of strategy games. Adventure games have also nose-dived since the 90's, I mean, adventure games used to be big business and the main type of triple A titles. At least with adventure games, they just recceeded into more of a niche market now, but wargames? Man, you'd have to be crazy to make one of those.
Genres dying out? Can you tell me when a genre of anything has ever died out of anything ever? Seriously. One example would be great.
Again, this is an evolution. How do you specifically define a Wargame? Or an Adventure game? All of the mechanics, features and definitions you would provide still exist in a vast number of games. They just don't exist precisely as you know them.
Panzer General is just an RTS with a war skin
