Battle script and character skills

Aaahh, that definitely sheds some light on my concerns/suggestions! I would still, however, look into the stuff about specializing equipment. That's a whole other layer added to swapping, like swapping out two different elemental types of pokemon... :X

Looking forward to playing this~

I am aware of those games. They don't look bad. However, my opinion stands.

Can 2k3 do that? Yes.

Can it do it without losing graphical quality and looking grainy? No.
note I chose the screenshot with steel phalluses

I GET IT, dude. You don't like the game. You're not hurting my feelings one bit. But, you don't have to be an ass about it.

No no no. I have nothing against your game or you personally. It's silly to think I'm trying to hurt your feelings. I'm trying to get your attention. You just uploaded an updated screenshot using a battle background that still is, visually, horrible. I'm sorry, but it's glaring to the eyeball still. Your excuse on the previous screenshot of "I am NOT changing it this close to release!" is B.S. Open Paint.net, press CTRL+SHIFT+U, and move the Lightness slider bar down to dim the blinding white stripes slicing your screen apart. That takes 2 seconds and your extremely hostile attitude tells me that you can't take any kind of criticism at all, like I predicted (and supported with other defensive and angry quotes) in my original posting.

I really did mean Pass/Fail in the most inoffensive way. It just doesn't pass muster. If my advice is unwelcome, though, I am MORE than happy to stop giving it. I do hope you reconsider this particular background and posting walkthroughs for bosses that are "easily killable at level 1."

RMVX (and I guess XP?? never used it) isn't really inferior to 2k3 for mapping except that it is one layer short. I don't consider the lack of diagonal tiles an inherent fault (that's RTP, the default resources, not the engine), and I don't consider the auto-tiling an inherent fault (nobody's forcing you to use the auto-tiles). Those are the most common complaints that I hear. It can do everything else, parallax mapping et al.

Now that I got that out of the way:

we could always not define an editor at all

yes plz. I almost assumed this from the get-go

Battle script and character skills

It sounds like you've got this well thought-out. It also sounds very cohesive, and somewhat interesting, but I was trying to figure out why it didn't really seem new and fresh. I realized that this system is, essentially, Final Fantasy X-2 (or XIII) with a party size of one. You're really just "class changing" unless there's a huge variety among equippable items. You'll almost never want to keep someone with low defense in for very long, as they're solo. And in the scenario of "this enemy has high defense" that you described, is it really considered innovative to have the strategy be "switch to the class that uses Defense Down, cast Defense Down" / "Cast analyze, manipulate weakness"?

I think what will really make this sparkle is working on your swapping mechanic and the speed of each character, similar to their differing TP regen rates. Obviously, changing between characters takes some time. However, you can cleverly play with players' decisions by intentionally allowing (random examples) Denn to be extremely quick to swap in but slow to swap out, or Mielle allows anybody switching into her spot to do it faster. Someone like Lourne might have skills that are really slow, but when you switch him in, he gets an instant free hit...

Your party-rotating mechanic is your strength here, so you should give the players incentive to use it differently and intelligently. I would also suggest something like locking out the "Switch" command for the first couple rounds of combat, or something, because there's no real disadvantage to walking around on the map as any one character or another. I would think you don't want Hellem, who sounds frail, to be leading the party when you get attacked, but you can just switch him right out so it doesn't much matter. Also, I earlier mentioned equippable items - that's another thing that separates your system from one person class-changing. You can swap between *entire sets* of gear in tandem with your change. You should definitely focus on making sure that a variety of equipment is available, because that strengthens your swapping mechanic. :)

Yeah, but the more I thought about it, the more I wanted to stick with something I was familiar with

I can understand this if a huge chunk of your project is in 2k3 form and it would be counterproductive to convert it. I cannot understand this if you simply didn't want to push yourself to learn something new.

I am really NOT trying to get into "WHICH ENGINE?!" WARS - rather, I'm criticizing the attitude of shying away from innovation because the tool is unfamiliar. Simplicity can be good, but "a thousand options" are not ever really in your way. They are there to allow other, different ways! Maybe if you pushed yourself to try out new graphic editors and/or new graphical styles, you would find that it would improve your overall spriting and editing ability! I KNOW it has for me. Maybe even other skills, like picking up graphics-related vocabulary. (Do you know what a Mandelbrot Fractal is? Neither did I, until I started using an editor that could render them.)

In short: don't be afraid to learn new things. That's the wrong attitude when you're putting your effort and energy into a community focused on something like making games. You NEED to constantly push yourself or what you produce will be trite and staid.

Edit: Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't realize this was WCouillard's remake and not your BoF2 project. Forgive any soapboxing in inappropriate profiles/threads

I LOVE THIS. Really, fantastic. You didn't use every single kind of tree and flower and plant, you didn't randomly scatter them throughout the village making nonsensical clutter, the visual lines are very clean...!

(Although the sunbeams are a little too opaque. Make them more transparent and tint them a warmer color - like sunshine!)

Choice Makes You Unhappy

there's a lot of indecisive people, and the amount of choice the world offers brings that shit out, not the reverse and the world is MAKING you indecisive.
