Master of the Wind Review

Wow, thank you very much. Although the issues you address are similar to those we have already heard about, you've presented it in a very fair, polite, and articulate way and I appreciate that. Like I told FG, we've tweaked Arc I (which is primarily where the balance issues come up, though feel free to correct me if you feel it was also a problem later on) in the past and will likely do so again when we feel the time is right. One of our priorities with MotW was to continue moving forward to maintain our creative momentum, so we didn't lose interest in the project and quit. The downside of this is that it meant the earlier chapters no longer reflect our own progresion.

I also wanted to give my two cents on what you were saying about Stoic's character arc. It is true that for his whole life, he has been selfless and held a lot of empathy for the downtrodder, which meant he had a hard time fitting in. However, I did try to illustrate (perhaps not well enough) during the Arc V flashbacks that he went from being more hopeful to being more cynical. Early on, he believes that anyone who shares his viewpoints is inherently good, and thus joins Stephen's group and ignoring some of the warning signs that he was less than noble despite sharing Stoic's disgust with the knighthood's discrimination. After that whole incident, and the tragic ramifications for Zeno/Stoic, he became much less trusting. It was meant to make a point I've tried to articulate in the later arcs - that people should be judged by their actions rather than the just positions they express on issues.

But thank you for the review, and for writing it well enough to make me examine the story through the prism of your comments.

What's next? The opacity of the fog effect during the Mausoleum sequence?

Upon further consideration, I'm done. I see now that this was a waste of time. You're clearly either unable or unwilling to engage in a civil debate, and have no recourse to support your points other than unjustified dogma and childish insults. I only mentioned the music error again because of the "100% percent accuracy" comment, which we both know by now isn't the case.

In that same post, I was actually trying to defend you against some of the insults you have received. I don't think MotW should get a free pass just because it's popular, and I think people attacking you just for simply having a dissenting opinion (and not for the review's other faults) are undermining MotW's own credibility. But after attacking the person yourself, you responded with the same sort of immature insults, directed not at one person, but at a huge group of people. The hypocrisy is breathtaking. You may come back with another round of the same BS, but I'm done.

Maybe I don't particuarly care how the music evalutation affected the over score, since by the look of things, it wouldn't have improved your view of the game. Maybe I just don't like you present yourself as such an authority and then make such a glaring error. I'm a journalist by trade, and if I turned in something as sloppy and careless as this, I'd be in deep shit.

I am glad you admitted to not finishing the entire game. I wish you had taken a page from Brickroad's book and acknowledged within the review that you quit (which itself is fine, if you had such a bad reaction). But at least then, readers would know that you didn't make it to the later chapters where the encounter rate is lower and the characters get more powerful skills.

And while we may have a few knee-jerk fanboys, I don't appreciate the broad insults towards the game's players. I assume a couple of this very site's leaders are "idiotic" then, given that we made that other list they put up a while back. We are not afraid fo finesse the first arc, we've done it several times and very well do so again in the future. If you thought the battles were rough now, I think you would have shot yourself if you played the very first version of the game back in 2005. And one more thing, don't throw the word "mediocrity" at me, because this review is less than mediocre. I don't care if the score was low, I do care that it's rushed, devoid of detail, and guilty of embarrassing errors. I've seen other reviews of yours, you can do better. You just wanted another game to cross off the list and have another review under your belt.

One hundred percent accuracy is a stretch, given the discrepancy with his evaluation of the music (apparently there is a “battle music,” which was news to me and ArtBane). Still, I don't approve of criticism of FG that is along the lines of “It's popular, it's must be good.” That's not right. If you're going to try and dispute his assessment, I would like it to be substantial. Even if he seems to have only played for an hour or so (the story and character sections are noticeably devoid of detail), it is his opinion and if he chose to quit so early, I suppose there isn't much we can do about it. I would much prefer an alternative review to a continuing argument about this one.

I'm not a terrible active member here, but I have been following your stuff. You write terrific reviews, Brickroad. Keep up the good work.

Thank you to the organizers of this for your kind words about MotW. I think some of these games represent the best the RM scene currently has to offer, so I'm humbled to be included amongst them.

"Why the hell are VX/XP users so protectionist about people who use 2K(3) disliking VX/XP games; it is almost as if they think all 2K(3) users are incapable of liking anything not made with 2K(3). It's retarded."

Because this is a persistent attitude you find within the RM community. You're right to say that not all RM2K/3 users feel that way, but I'm not sure Karsuman necessarily meant that. Still, several people have openly admitted to me or friends of mine that they ignore all RMXP/VX games just as a rule. Personally, I adored RM2K, and held onto it even when RM2k3 came out. But when XP emerged, ArtBane and I felt it offered us more possibilities for our next project.

Hmm...you avoided my question about the music. It seems my earlier suspicions are now confirmed. You gave up on the soundtrack during Fort Drake and decided to write off the entire score as annoying (though I did see the exception made for Port Arianna's song). Something tells me you figured since you were getting into so many battles you assumed the battle music, though you hadn't heard it, was the most prevalent.

However, as the game's co-creator, I'm telling you we HAVE no "battle music" at all, and you seem to be caught in a lie. Bad form for a review, I'm afraid the credibility of that section of the review is gone.
