My suggestion is to NOT make a full-scale, epic RPG. They require a lot more time than most people are able to commit to. There are notable exceptions (Harmonic's Dondoran), but for the most part, the epic RPG isn't feasible.

My suggestion is to make something smaller-scale with more personality. The 15 to 20 hour is the perfect mark for a full-length RPG Maker game, if you ask me. If you can hit 10 hours, consider yourself accomplished.

And about the RTP. The RTP isn't really that bad. Check out Kinetic Cipher and Lost Legend for some games that use the RTP. You can do a lot with them. And as for someone like you who is focused on writing, it will be even less of a concern.
