Skills: Writing long prattling posts analyzing traditional JRPG game mechanics
What do you guys think about having a Pokemon design event, where we, as a community, make pokemon to put into one community fangame? I think it'll be fun, and Pokemon Essentials is developed enough for it.
Seems there are enough RMN Pokemon fans (I'm not among them; I plead ignorance). So I wouldn't see thy not ... except who's going to be charge of organizing it and deciding the event's parameters?

How about a limited number of saves? A small number... like 2. That should discourage the player to save, but if he really needs to, he has an option.
You could consider the two as optional savepoints that the player can take advantage of and happen at strategic points in the game, say 1/4 and 3/4 into the game.

Maybe it's asking a lot, but have you considered giving the player the choice of whether to have save available
Have considered giving the player of choice of whether to save or not at the beginning of the game, noting the advantages and disadvantages of each choice? It's just an idea ...

Another playlist by me of notorious games of a certain type (cringes and makes sad face at the same time):
Games that were not meant to be COMPLETED that I have actually played

Legionwood: Tale Of The Two Swords
If I remember correctly I liked the characters overall, there is an interesting mythology involved and you can assign points on stats upon level up for the different characters.
