A long completed one that has many of the characteristics you mentioned is Master of the Wind. Otherwise, I would recommend The Reconstruction, which is complete as well.

If I wanted to play classic games, I haveemulatorsDOSBox.
You still need the original source code, though ... That said, DOSBox would probably run smoother than anything written in Java, although you would need to make sure to have the right settings especially where sound is concerned.

I took the week off work for Halloween anyway long before this event, so I have all Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday to play!
Nearly done now anyway, just one more vision and I can start doing actual gameplay. I will be finished on time and it will be a freaking awesome little game!
