KENTONA'S PROFILE

I make games from the heart instead of wasting time with research or experience.

I am an amateur RPG designer and hobbyist with a strong interest in the retro-RPG and NES/SNES era RPG genres. I also happen to be a professional software developer.

I enjoy hockey, video games, reading, writing and playing board games such as Settlers of Catan.

I spend far too much time on RMN, but accomplish nothing of use. I used to be a somebody.

<Clyve> Oh yeah, Kenton you're a somebody again so you should probably modify your profile.
<kentona> so I am

nothing is unacceptable on the internet

RMN Snews - Issue #23

so, other than wanting to talk about ourselves, any other comments on the article? I might do these every 3 months or so...

RMN Snews - Issue #23

1. What is your personal TODO list? (projects, initiatives, even personal life stuff like 'get a job' or 'finish school' or 'get fit' if you want to share that)
I want to get excited about game making again. I get bored soon after starting.

2. How many other RM or dev communities are you active in?
None.

3. What is your current role at RMN?
Lurker mostly.

4. Are you satisfied with your current participation on RMN?
Meh.

5. Do you feel you are empowered to accomplish what you want to accomplish?
Not sure how to answer that. Yes but I'm lazy?

6. What are you expecting from me?
Not much actually. (that's a good thing)

7. What aspects of RMN are you disatisfied with or concerned about? (functionality, trends, certain members, leadership, etc...)
It's getting a little too social media but I guess that's the new norm. I don't like change.

8. If you were running RMN, what would you do? Who would you recruit to help you?
I wouldn't be so crazy as to run a website for other people.

9. How long do you think you will be with RMN (in any capacity)?
#RMN4life

10. Is there anything you wish to say?
...
If there is a "radio station" it should be called Snews Radio.

or SRADIO for short

RMN APRIL 2015 PODCAST PART 1

what is a shota?

RMN Gets Pom Gets Wi-Fi

Cool read. Though I felt that it didn't go into any great depths over the many points it touches upon. You dug into several interesting subjects, but I wanted more! More analysis!

I am interested to know what the distinction is between a collective audience, versus a collection of individuals who share several common values, and whether the distinction even matters in an analysis like this. I am only talking at a high level here, but there is a tendency to think in terms of "RMN thinks or does this" as if RMN is a single entity, and then something happens that seems to contradict the way "RMN does things", when it is really just different individuals with different values or goals acting their own way. (And do communities tend to homogenize over time, as those contrarians leave? And does groupthink and "us vs. the outside" mentality take over?)

Interesting work, like I said. Maybe I should seek out some of the other papers you referenced... I ought to learn more about this as I am out of my depth in the subject.

A scene is a loop that handles game logic processing, each scene class is made to handle a different game state. So like Trihan said when you're in the main menu the Scene_Menu loop is being executed. The main game's loop responsibility is to handle these scenes, transition between scenes, and call the update method on them.

Ah. That makes more sense.

(I also don't have the benefit of looking at the Ace editor while at work)

It's just RPG Maker's term for a distinct screen in the game. You could just as easily call the class Zaphod_Beeblebrox and it would work exactly the same way.
I understand class names, but I was struggling to understand the purpose and use of the Scene objects in the Ace program. What are scenes? You say that there are different screens in the game.

Does this mean that Ace is cycling through 30 or 60 scenes a second?

Slip into Ruby - Under the Hood part 2: The Modules cont.

but... what is a Scene?

Slip into Ruby - Under the Hood part 1: The Modules

On the other hand, it is harder to follow than other languages because none of the variables are explicitly typed, there are no semi-colons to indicate end of line/function, and blocks of code aren't neatly contained inside brackets.

Slip into Ruby - Under the Hood part 1: The Modules

I think my biggest hurdle will be the peculiarities of Ruby syntax
