Your Most Disappointing Game?

This topic really got me thinking. There are very few games that have been disappointing to me. Maybe its because I purposely try to lower my expectations into order to trick myself into being pleasantly surprised. Maybe its because when I fail to get into a game I tend to blame myself and my current mood rather than the game itself. However I did come up with a few exceptions.

Grandia III - I love the Grandia series. The first Grandia is possibly my favorite game of all time. I like the combat system, am interested in the story, and empathize with the characters. Grandia III probably had the best combat in the series, but it failed on all other fronts. The only characters that I liked left your party halfway through the game and were never heard from again. Villains with no backstory kept being introduced and killed off before anything about them was explained. The story was just ... bland. I blame this one entirely on my high expectations.

Suikoden II - Wait before you pelt me with rocks, let me explain. I had not one, but two opportunities to purchase this game back when you could actually find it in stores. I foolishly thought I could wait until later. Now it is one of the most sought after games of all time. I finally buckled down and bought it for over $100 on eBay a year ago. It was pretty good, but not the Holy Grail at the end of my 10 year quest. I ended up enjoying Exit Fate a lot more. Its a very similar game but is longer and is completely free.

I enjoying The Way's nonstandard storytelling so much, its hard for me to understand some disliking the game for the same reasons I loved it. The author definitely had a plan, he just meant for the player to figure it out on their own. Unfortunately most players, myself included, couldn't put the pieces together by themselves. Thus the long, intricate discussions on the message boards.

Anyway Quintessence, I still have a huge problem with the reviewer's final statements, but I won't debate the rest of the review. Say what you will about the story, Quintessence had great visuals and original music. If that game gets one star, what does the game with poor spelling, bland visuals, numerous bugs, unbalanced combat, and poor storytelling that I played yesterday get?

The Final Fantasy XIII topic

I'm just wondering what king of person walks into a room full of Final Fantasy fans and starts a fight by saying FFXIII sucks.

I don't see what there is to elaborate. The Way does in fact have a storyline, contrary to what you stated. Its a story based game. You can't just deny its existence because you didn't care for it. To this day there are still people discussing the plot points on the Crestfallen boards. There must be something there.

The Final Fantasy XIII topic

Gee, I'm getting the impression the Nightblade doesn't care for Final Fantasy XIII. The real question is: why does he expect us to care? Most of the people posting on this topic are going to buy the game regardless of what he or anyone else says about it.

I can never understand reviews like this one. Its hard to believe you were even playing the same that I did. I am very curious as to what games the reviewer thought have had good stories. Although most of the review was not overly cruel, I believe that you should never tell someone that their game has no redeeming qualities and that they should give up on game making. As a group of amateur game developers we should be encouraging one another, not telling people who's games we don't like to abandon their projects. I'm not saying that truthful criticism should be avoided, but it is hard enough to finish making a game without people actively telling you to stop.

Which battle type is good for you?

I'm up for any battle type as long as it isn't initiated randomly.

Iron Gaia: Virus Review

When reviewing a game it can be easy to forget that the creator made this on their own time and probably worked hard on it. I did not think this review has especially cruel, but it certainly wasn't polite either. On a site like this, the game's creator will almost certainly read every review. Therefore I believe that every review should be written directed primarily at them. It should be polite, constructive criticism and not a rant that picks apart every flaw for the entertainment of the readers. I can truly imagine how this review must make Max feel. Its like a dagger to the heart and the comments about how funny it was just twist the knife further. The least a reviewer can do is try to soften the blow.

What Videogames Are You Playing Right Now?

Ive been playing Mass effect 2 for days straight now, finally beating it and getting the perfect good ending at 22 hours and 57 minutes, probably a little more since I didn't have enough paragon earlier to solve a cat fight that could have endangered the final mission.

That game was released less than 48 hours ago. How is this possible? Unless you obtained it earlier...
