RALPHTHEFIFTH'S PROFILE

LEARSON - Chapter One
This is my first completed RPG Maker game. It is loosely based on a story/stories that I have been playing around with in my head for years.

Eh, cool chapter. As most people said here, yeah, little gameplay, but it was enjoyable anyways. Felt more like a 'Visual Novel' or 'Movie' than a RPG game, but it was still good. Hoping for more?
Spoilers?

Uh... tho i'm a little with shayoko here with the Ralph thing at the ending. Tho I can understand why he wouldn't fight those guards (Ralph did talk about not wanting to kill more people at some point), there was some dialogue you could have added to this part explaining Ralph's easy surrender. Like 'Ugh! If I make a scene, they could capture my son or Kai' or something similar. It's just a little ridiculous how easily he gave up, leaving his son behind after losing his daughter, without second thought (even for the player!), it came off as really forced and out of nothing.

Overall I enjoyed it <: I didn't have the time months before to play it but finally could make some now (the game was sitting in my downloads folder since like 8 months? haha that was weird). Like 5 hours playing, no regrets (:
Greetings!

Yeah, as the series went on I kind of got bored with it so I spent less time putting in stuff to do and instead focused on trying to get through all of the plot points I had planned. Looking back I had far too much story planned, really needed to cut down on the characters.

Regarding the bit near the end, I'm not sure how well it came across in the series but Ralph (even this far on in the story) wasn't meant to be that strong. If I recall correctly his previous victories came from when he had backup and later on when he had a complete disregard for his own defence/a very high tolerance for pain. The chances of him taking on multiple Eastern soldiers would be slim to none. The most important instance of this I can recall is the Elite outside Rarsaw, Ralph didn't really stand a chance against him (the battles in the game don't reflect this very well), but he was impressed by Ralph's actions in the fight and didn't want to kill him without seeing him act like that again.

I suppose in the situation at the end of chapter 4 Ralph could have called for help but I doubt he would have wanted to put his son in danger, so surrendering without incident seemed like the best choice to him.

I'm really really impressed with this so far (I'm about 4 hrs in and I'm at the Cave to meet with Dale). I love that it's much more story and adventure driven as opposed to grinding you're way through dungeons. You've not pulled punches with the dark side of mankind and I respect that.

The mapping isn't out-of-this-world amazing but it's better than a lot of games, but without some signposting here and there, some sections can get confusing / repetitive.

Another gripe I have is one that I have with the RPG genre as a whole - who on Earth leaves sword and potion around in boxes eh? I like the 'bandit loot' thing though, it makes a bit more sense. I did like the shovel and digging up items but I haven't encountered it since leaving the desert area.

The dialogue can be a bit colloquial at times (and I can tell you're English!) but I laughed out loud on the odd occasion which doesn't happen a lot with games, not least amateur-made. Looking forward to playing more! It's inspired me to think about my old RPG Maker XP games and maybe trying to start them up again. Good work!

I'm glad you like it (so far), personally whenever I look back at Chapter 1 I find the dialogue to be terrible. Although I guess I can say the same for every Chapter that I'm not currently working on.

I'm not too fond of the standard RPG stuff like getting better equipment, fighting random encounters etc. but I kind of felt like I had to include it. I tone it down as the series progresses however I'm not sure whether that's really a good thing since as a reviewer has mentioned I don't really replace it with anything.

I forgot about the digging thing, I quite enjoyed that, might try and repurpose it in the next chapter.

Regarding the dialogue I was trying to make everyone sound really common, since pretty much everyone IS really common (at least as far as outward appearances are concerned).

I'm happy to see it inspired you to continue with your games, I don't think that's happened before so it makes me kinda proud.

I'm very curious as to what you'll think of the rest of the series.

How to get pass the guard that wont accept bribe ?

After you've talked to him you should be able to head south to the next screen and then you can climb the vines to the right.

LEARSON - Chapter Two

Uhh, how in the heckie do i get past the revived bounty hunters as David? The game seems to go unresponsive when the battle is about to start.

Is the game actually freezing or crashing? If so I have no idea why that is.

Otherwise you just have to let them kill you.

I would iffin' I had a damn key :)

Honestly no, I THINK I've been all over the desert and spoken two to everyone.
Although that cheapass mayor refuses to let me in the chest next to this throne :(

Also, I've seen the entrance to a few other caves and a chest with a plank of wood on the top of a rock.
And, I did pull a switch that did something in a cave. I thought it lowered a blank for to walk over but I can't get across.....

Ah okay, you've jogged my memory now.

If you go to where the Mayor is there should be some vines behind him, climb up them and you should be able to go to the next screen where the chest and plank of wood are.
Take the plank of wood and you can use it to bridge the gap in the cave with the chest.

WOW, looks like I'm about as dumb as they come when it comes to
getting out of the desert :)

I in that tiny town with a Mayor. I've been all over the desert but can't seem
to find my way out :( All the scorpions and rats are dead.
Could the problem be those to guys trying to tear down the bridge on the right??

I have the iron sword and think I've completed all the little side quests.....

HELP!!!! :)

Have you been through the gate in the leftmost cave?

I played this chapter a few months ago but somehow forgot to comment! sorry vnv So I log in just to say that I really enjoyed it! I can't think of bugs, though, as it's been awhile since i've played it. But I thought it would be nice if I just came here to say that I really liked your games [: Take care!

Cheers.

I really appreciate that.

How do David and Valx get across the river to the town? I have been all over the area and can't figure it out. Help please.

If you go to the map South of that one, then to the map East of that, the path to the cave will now be clear. You then go through the cave which will lead you up to the switch that extends the bridge.

Random thoughtsincludes spoilers

the usual awkward sprites vs avatars making it not only look bad but harder to remember characters
not to mention it does not say there name when they are talking sadly.

the wife/girlfriend is pretty impressive getting out of bed w/o waking you up!

silly kid of course people who are important to you take priority over strangers!

why did lucy lose to those acolytes? she already beat a few masters!are they above master level?

theres secrets in this chapter!?

the mapping gets too open exploration after the training scene :(

there actually was a point to the cigarettes!?

how does anyone even get a boulder up there!?

why did lucy have that power? (magic?)

or she(girl with lover) could have her father killed...atm her lover does not seem like a bad guy...way better then some doucebag father trying to control his kids life...
well so much for him being a good guy...that lasted all of 60 seconds >.>

would be nice if we got a break from back tracking over and over...like after you get the ticket from the mayor warping to the front gate where the guards are would of been GREAT,stuff like that

riley was a knight/merc!?

wow everything makes sense now,why riley hates the mad dogs so much why david wants revenge against valx but despite how strong he was was still afraid of him

did david lose his memories again after this? this is the past and he has already seen the demons but...he acted like it was the first time in ch2

who the hell is the silver haired guy who was tortured??? its...Ralph...the guy who used to be blond???
when...when did we jump to the present??? what about david going to kill deus???

was it a illusion? hes young again (but his avatar still has grey hair)

i don't know who or what learson is but its retarded...going on about needing to make ralph suffer, refusing to explain why AND even having the audacity to say he will END his suffering right after saying he is part of whats causing it!

the hell? some no name guy killed valx???and he lost his memories again???

why are the eastren soldiers are enemy? were prisoners in a foreign country this makes
NO SENSE especially since we apparently speak the same language

how does ralph climb ladders with one arm?

whats with ralphs plot armor power up!? we already were introduced to the 3 legendary s so ralph is supposed to be a normal person!

i noticed the mapping isn't always solid, entering different areas things like streams are missing

yawm, why do we have to play as mark? don't care about this character lets move the important stuff along!

why does riley not have gear equipped? of course she should have weapons!

what the fuck is going on with these scenes!? its back to david who was awakened which i thought was in the past!
this is making no sense

how did ralph carry all that wood with one arm???

we get to battle with the black knight!? godly!

not sure what the point of the spike trap is if the switch to get out is inside(how did they even get out then?)

why...playing as a character called jonny >.>

david was beaten up again...wtf...

General hid to make smaller

Gameplay around 5 hours
this was a very hit and miss part. it seems to start off in the past before ch1 and w/o warning jumps ahead to sometime after ch2 then w/o warning seems to go back to the past for a bit then the now present.
frankly the plots confusing as hell because of this.
the many forgettable side characters are hard to remember between them not having a name when they speed and the differences between sprites and avatars.

the pacing was good at first until you have to explore bigger areas and do a bit of back tracking a couple times.
some side stuff was forced on us this time like needing to go back and get someone or something when you find out you need it conveniently.
or taking control of irrelevant characters just to drag it out.

there was not many battles so they were not tedious.on a interesting note you don't gain any exp which was a great idea.
this was a pretty strait forward chapter in terms of game play (at no point should you be confused as to what you have to do)

Overall
it has a good amount of flaws but its still worth playing.
i hope the next part focuses on the important characters only and finishes the story...now i can finally see what the goal of the plot is or at least part of it.

I've finally decided to give a line for line response to your random thoughts. So, here goes.

I thought I did a fairly good job with making the faces match the sprites, granted I may be biased since I created the thing and know who everyone is. Plus, I have to admit a lot of characters are similar looking, and I find it hard to make the hair colours match perfectly.

The name would take up a line, and I already crippled myself by making the boxes smaller than the default.

She could slide out the front, or roll over him. I never imagined her as being particularly heavy. Plus, David's a heavy sleeper.

I have nothing to add to that.

If this wasn't a game each acolyte would be a unique individual so these two just happened to be very strong. Also, she didn't have Darren with her.

Yep. I was going to mention the secrets in the description (there are 5 of them) but I forgot. I really don't like doing the descriptions for my games, not sure why.

I dunno, it's still very linear.

There isn't really. I just found it hard to think of secrets. I was going to remove them but I really liked the idea and the sparkly glow effect.

Magic. Nature. I don't know.

It's hereditary. She just never noticed/figured out a way to unleash it. There are a lot of Magic users walking around who don't know it.

I have nothing to add to that.

Yep.

Yeah but it pads out the gameplay which helps me feel justified in the ludicrous amount of time it seems to take to make. Like the bloody spider/wasp fights in Chapter 1. Looking back I really hate them, at least Kevin MacLeods music makes it somewhat bearable.

She was something. Her face is also somewhat fatter and I don't like how she looks with that hair and sans eye patch.

Yep.

No. In the flashback (well, It wasn't exactly a flashback but whatever)they only pop up for like a second so he doesn't really notice them. They were biding there time before popping up again, however I had them appear whenever he sort of has a flash of his past, whats-her-name mentioning the Black Knight and Raphael encouraging his fighting instincts to kick in.

Yeah. I'm not sure if it's a myth or not that trauma makes your hair go gray but I thought it looked cool.

He has to find him first. He's pretty slow at that, it took him a long fking time to find Valx. It was meant to be less but I didn't want Danielle to be quite so young.

Its a dream. Sort of. Also kind of a symbiotic connection.

You'll get some motivation for Learson, very near the end.

He was actually in a cave in Chapter 2, but I really like the idea of some human just walking in, fucking up one of the major characters and leaving like it was nothing. Although he does come back, Raphael needs his sword back.

I did write myself into a bit of a corner here. The East took control of Rarsaw at the end of the war however I had to shoehorn in some reason why there was still torturing going on. So I put in that crap about the higher ups needing to analyse the situation which takes months in the game for some unexplained reason.

I don't think its that questionable. You could probably do it with no arms with a lot of chin work and leaning.

The idea was, in the past whenever Ralph was in a fight he was only really concerned with survival/protecting himself. Now he doesn't really fear getting injured and deep down he doesn't even fear death so he's fighting solely to kill, hence the power-up and decreasing health (since he isn't really defending himself).

Map continuity isn't really something I care about. I think I tried to do it early on in Chapter 1 but I find doing it gets real annoying real fast.

Yeah, Mark's a dick. But he and Laura are going to become important plot devices.

Whoops. That was not intentional. Not that it really matters in the grand scheme, she does no fighting.

If it's the bit I'm thinking of he's in Black Knight mode at that point. Although later on he does switch from Black Knight to David between scenes (when he comes to Johnny's town).

Video game logic.

I have nothing to add to that.

Yeah. I can't really remember why I did that. Think I was just trying to drag it out and create some sort of illusion of gameplay.

What's wrong with Johnny?

He was in pussy mode (he's pretty much human when he's 'David' at this point since the 'Black Knight' part is hogging all the power after their little argument. All the bad ass stuff he did in Chapter 1/2 was partly fueled by the Black Knight's power, however it only works properly when you're conscious of it hence why he could still get hurt and cut himself.)Plus he had his back turned and Kai's a bad ass.

Spoilers in there BTW for people who haven't played it.
