RALPHTHEFIFTH'S PROFILE

LEARSON - Chapter One
This is my first completed RPG Maker game. It is loosely based on a story/stories that I have been playing around with in my head for years.

This looks pretty neat.

Cheers.
It's one of the few buildings you can actually go in, eventually.

LEARSON - Chapter One

Nope.

I was too lazy to have anything meaningful change.

You get the option to buy an equally powerful sword later on. Which is kind of a cop out but actually makes sense due to something you'll find out in Chapter 2
Wait, no. That was a lie. I took that line out.

Humorous and Fun

Huh. How did I not notice this.

I finally got around to watching this, I got very nervous at the thought of actually watching someone else play through my game.

I made the window a 16:9 ratio since I figured most people have wide monitors these days and it always annoys me how RPG maker games are generally square. The resolution I made it was 640 by 360 so I limited myself somewhat since you cant see much vertically. I had to start making my maps less spread out which I think actually made me a better mapper.

I was aware that people got confused with the climbing and jumping but I didn't realise how confusing it could be until watching this. I'm probably not gonna change it, though. Since I don't really want to keep going back to the first episode when I've got a hell of a lot more of this to get through.

In the second map you weren't meant to be able to jump since David hurt his leg after the big jump. Although you still couldn't jump the ledges after he got it healed since I just decided that I didn't want to have so many jumps all over the place. But I left the very first map with all the jumps since I had grown fond of it.

Yeah, David was lying when he said he didn't have any money since he didn't wanna hand it over to bandits.

I also cringed when you kept using bite in battles, I only put it there to pad out his skills and make it look like the battle system was more complicated than it actually was. I think his default attack does almost double the damage and there is no real point in trying to paralyse those enemies. Although all of the david battles arent really proper battles, I just put them in as a result of me not being able to make fight scenes look how I want them.

I think it's pretty cool that you did a video of my game, so cheers for that.

This is a really creative use of the RTP.

I'm totally gonna steal this idea. Oh wait, I mean, I'm totally gonna use this as inspiration.

Is this area PAST the bridge? I see what looks like a fence off to the left of your picture. There are two people at the bridge.
There is a gate which is locked and I cannot pass.
There is also an area when has a box and a small gap to cross in the bottom right of a cave but when I stand at the edge or back up and try to jump it....I cannot.

Ah yes, now I see.

You need the plank of Wood.
(I put a lot of wood in the Desert for some reason.)
Next to where the Mayor is sitting there are some vines, if you climb up them you should go to an area where you find a plank of Wood lying around and a chest.

You can then use the plank to cross the small gap you mentioned.
The reason you can't just jump over that is because...
Err... I'll get back to you on that one.

Yes sir I am afraid that I am. Where next, good Sir?

Have you collected the 3 logs of Wood for the guy?

Yes in the first area all the way to the right where you have to jump a gap. I went again and didnt go up yet but did some other stuff then came back and went up another fine and I was able to go to the next area. I am in the desert area now but dont seem to be able go any further. I did a couple of quests and re-talked to everyone but still dont see a way to progress.

I am already playing...can I be a bug catcher please, can I, can I? Dont make an old man beg.

If you could PM me about any bugs you find that'd be great.

Are you still stuck in the desert?

For me in the beginning, all the way to the right after you take the long jump, everytime I try to climb up, the game freezes.

Sorry, where are you exactly?

Are you talking about the area you start in?

Also, I'm definitely going to need testers before I release the next episode.

Unity Plays Your Game!

Thanks for the feedback!

I've heard similar complaints about the jumping and I plan to address that whenever I update the game (which should be when I release the second episode)

Honestly the battles (and shops/weapons/items) were indeed an afterthought. I debated on whether I should have them in at all however I felt that they added some much needed variety and filler.

Instead of improving on them for the next episode I've pretty much taken them out completely. Barring the cinematic unlosable/unwinnable fights.
I did quite enjoy making the battles and would like another shot at them but they really don't fit into the second episode and arguably the first either since people don't generally go around punching spiders.

I don't think anyone else has pointed out the face change and it's given me horrible flashbacks to when david was a slightly resized version of the cloaked figure from the XP sprites. I spent a while trying to make it not look 'off' and eventually gave up.

That path thing, this is gonna sound weird. I knew it would confuse people but I decided to leave it in anyway since If I closed it off the map just looked wrong to me. When I'm mapping I don't try to make good looking maps I just try to satisfy my weird mind feng shui (hard to explain). I'm not sure if everyone else maps like that. It normally makes me make them look worse and then I go with it anyway since it just looks 'right' to me.

Anyway, cheers for the feedback. You manage to make things very pleasant to take in.

Edit:
You mentioned you weren't sure what to do next.
Could you tell me what point you're at please?
