edh for life

duuuude I could talk about EDH for hours... so I will.

I have like a few decks now cobbled together out of random cards, including one starring Grenzo (randomly summon a weak creature from the bottom of your deck, maybe, at any time) and it just has a bunch of little monsters that have weird effects when they enter the battlefield (kill target creature, kill random creature, summon chump blockers, give you mana). So, if someone is doing something you don't like, you can try to summon a creature to alter the situation... When you play his ability you have a 20% of getting an effect you need at the time and an 80% of getting something that may help or may be totally useless :P

Also, one starring Sen Triplets (which lets you play your opponent's cards on your turn) and the rest of the deck is all about stealing from your opponents - swapping permanents, mind controlling creatures, rezzing their creatures, casting artifacts and spells from their library or hand, controlling their turn, or swapping life totals with them :D

I love that EDH allows you to make these really overwrought and goofy theme decks :P

What Are Some Of Your Favorite Puzzle Games That You Often Like To Play?

I love Tetris! Although it always strikes me as funny that Tetris and similar games (Dr. Mario, Panel de Pon, Bubble Bobble) are considered puzzle games, since they are really similar to arcade-action games like Super Hexagon, bullet hells, etc... they're all about finding the best solution to a problem as quickly as possible as things get increasingly more hectic. The puzzle aspect of arcade puzzle games has a totally different feel than, like, a Myst puzzle. But I digress!

The last couple of calm puzzle games I played were Machinarium and Monument Valley. Both are beautiful visually and have some pretty neat puzzles. Both gave me a couple moments of total loss and frustration too, which seems like a natural part of the genre. I'm looking forward to trying The Witness eventually, although I'm not sure I have the mental patience for a bunch of miscellaneous logic things :P

Also, uh, I dig Chess too, sometimes!

What Videogames Are You Playing Right Now?

Some friends and I tried our hand at Rocket League last night and woooooooo it's fun as heck :D

It was very funny and unexpected!

I used to play Magic with some friends at a nearby shop, but most of those modes require a somewhat expensive card set and I'm a bit cheap :P But! I play Commander with a bunch of different people on the weekend, which is a lot of fun. It's very laid-back; you can make fun themed decks and pick a favorite creature to be your commander, plus you can play a bunch of goofy cards that are inexpensive :D

I used to play the Pokemon card game (and I had a bit of a collection!) but I've totally forgotten how it works, hah.

Yesterday, my friend was at the register checking out when the cashier noticed his homemade wallet made out of old Magic the Gathering lands. He then says "Woah, cool, you play Magic?" Then, a second cashier says to the first, "Hey wait, do you play Magic?" They talk for a moment.

Then the woman behind us in line says "Hey, I heard you talking! I just want to say that I help run a gaming convention in Kalamazoo and we have a load of people there who play Magic, you all should really come!"

By the end of it we had like a half-dozen people discussing Magic at the check-out of Walgreens. It was hilarious and dorky as all get-out~

What Do You Think About Text Pauses in Game Dialog?

I remember ages ago I made a huge deal out of perfectly timing all the dialogue letters in my boxes... but honestly, if you want realistic dialogue on that level, just use voice! Pauses get reaaaallly annoying to players and the effect doesn't hit as hard as it you may think.

That said, text pauses and slow letter displays can be a fun effect when used sparingly

Yay!

I gotta make a point of it too! I'm always afraid to like, make a game page or anything for a game before I have a lot of good screens & design in place, but I keep making so many changes that I can never commit to one. Also I never wanna talk about a game before I think of a title either ;-__-

I, for one, welcome our new Overlady. Hail Queen Pom! Let's make her RMN's mascot! After all, this is the only place she can be found.

I'll have to play Pom someday. It's nice seeing all these little first-timer story games! Like A Very Pink Game! AVPG was super cute and you could see there was a lot of fresh passion in it... but I think sheepherds moved on, too :/ Ah well.
