or you could just bow out and let me repurpose this topic into a general discussion on criticism like I've been trying to for half a page.

by making topics like this until people start making reassuring noises just to stop it from happening any more

this is more or less what I mean when I talk about distancing yourself emotionally from your project, yeah. being able to recognize when people are giving actual input (but maybe not phrasing it as well as they could) is one of the big skills inherent in receiving criticism. asking for clarification when things are vague instead of assuming the worst and making yourself into Pagliacci is another.

I'd say that several somebodies already have and that we should break up the pity party
yeah, once you've made it so your emotions don't ride on your project anymore, the real hard part starts. everybody is fallible, yourself included, and odds are good that if your game gets enough exposure you're going to hear people who've got completely opposite ideas of what has to be changed and how.
as for how to handle this... I have no idea! noise and insight sound pretty much the same. I'll probably have to get better at this at some point, and I guess I'll know for sure then. how do the rest of you approach this?

yes okay thank you that is quite enough of your swan song for me
e: what I'm saying is, now that you have your answers you need to work this out yourself. I don't know or care what happened to you to cause all this sniffling, and I like this topic much better when it's about criticism in general. if you'd like to give interested parties the play-by-play for this unfolding drama that is your life, you should probably keep it to your project blog. this ain't the place.

hey, finally, some people who wanna do more than just weep bitterly about something specific that happened to them at some point!

Aaand it looks like Victor's script works for my purposes! Thanks again for your help, everyone -- this was way more painless than I had been thinking.

my bad, I guess. I had taken this for a general topic on the subject of receiving harsh criticism when really it's just one man's very public crisis.

it's very convenient to be able to tell yourself in any given situation that you're not at fault and the other person can be ignored. it's just that things are rarely that simple.
but this is the internet, where (if you want to) you can shut out everything you don't like to hear and retreat into a little shell where everything is okay and nothing has to change. I feel sorry for the people who go that route, but what can I do? I'm glad you got the comforting platitude that you started this topic in order to receive.
