'this game has gross and jarring fanservice + I don't dig that' should not be considered a dangerously controversial statement
it happens to be a thing that crops up often. if you're tired of hearing it, then rest assured that I'm just as tired of seeing it.
FF7 remake. It's a thing.
I honestly really like Wedge's voice -- it's cute, and it fits the fact that he's basically a big naive idealistic softie putting as much of a positive spin on the whole 'belongs to an environmental terrorist group' thing as he can
I really like this style of Barrett, too -- they could have easily gone for the exaggerated Mr. T thing, but Barrett's always been one of my favourite characters for his sense of responsibility and his kind heart. making him a little more stern and serious should help get that across better.
another thing I've noticed is that they're definitely making this Cloud a bit scrawny and young-looking. this is a good sign, in my opinion -- it means they might be going for the 'actually a huge dork putting on airs' thing, rather than the Scowly Coolguy characterization they've been resting on since Advent Children.

e: is my use of it here incorrect? when somebody charges into my status to be all 'by the way both sides are wrong and I don't care :-)', is that something I should respect?
and is it really dogpiling to grumble about it in a status? you'll notice that in the actual topics I'm talking about, I've been very mild -- there have been multiple points reading that topic where I've said to myself 'yeah, no, this would be mean' and held off on saying what was in my gut.

I'm going to second what zDS said about this being really clean and visually striking, and the way the base red works with the warmer highlights and cooler shadows is gorgeous.

I'm not throwing a value judgement on fanservice in general here, so much as being frustrated that even talking about it in a personal sense (e.g. 'I'm weirded out by this') is enough to get people swooping in as though I'm getting ~too political~ and has people bending over backwards + expending sweat and tears to equivocate a sexualized 13 year old girl into something that's supposed to be beyond criticism

It shouldn't. Nor should enjoying fan-service. Both sides attract too much vitriol. I'm more interested in whether a game is good or not to care.

welcome! it's definitely good to have an easygoing sort of perspective on your first few projects -- I've spoken with a lot of people who were really committed to getting it right on their very first time, and that's a lot of pressure to put on yourself. good luck, and do your best! as long as you keep learning, you'll improve much faster than you expect.
