Description

You have traveled back in time to the 90s! You look around your room and see a massive collection of games. Mario, Zelda, Mega Man, Castlevania, Metroid, Sonic, Street Fighter, and more, all waiting to be played. You can listen to your older brother playing Doom in the other room and The Simpsons on the family TV. You see posters of the Ninja Turtles and Transformers, along with countless toys of all kinds. You can even sense the smell of pizza coming from the kitchen! So many great memories are coming back to you!

You go and turn on your computer and see something different. Not only is your computer more advanced than it ever was before. (Heck, you don't even remember having a computer all for you, you always shared the family computer) It now has a brand new program pre-installed: RPG Maker. "Awesome!" you think, "I can make one of those cool Final Fantasy games!". You proceed to spend hours planning how to make your dream game; thinking of sharing it with all your friends at school until you realize something... You only have a single floppy disk to put the game on.

Well, not everything was better in the past.

-----

The 1.44 Floppy disk event is a way to celebrate the now-obsolete data storage medium and also a way to go back in time and appreciate how valuable space back then; where every single byte was valuable and games were optimized to make the most of each one (Unlike modern games were 50+ GB games has kind of become the norm).

The idea is simple: Make a game that can fit into one floppy disk. While there were lots of different kinds of disks with varying capacities back then, the most standard and well-known was the 1.44 MB one. You are free to do whatever you want as long as it can fit into those 1.44 MB. You are not restricted to the technology of the era either. Any modern game engine is fair game, as long as the compressed game still fits into 1.44 MB.

RULES:
-----

- Teams are allowed.

- You may use any engine.

- You can use any resources you've made in the past. This includes making resources before the event officially starts.

- The games must be uploaded to the event page.

- There must be at least 10 minutes of gameplay.

- The game size can't be larger than 1.44 MB. (After compression of course)

- RTP is allowed but the game should run without it installed. If you need help here are some tutorials for RPG Maker 2003

- The game should be able to run out of the box with minimal fussing. This ideally means that it should run by just clicking the .exe file. But if the game requires some extra files then those same files should go within the 1.44 MB limit.

- The event begins on Wednesday the 14th of April and ends at 4:00 am Thursday the 29th of April. (14.4 days. Get it?)

- RPG Maker VX / Ace, MV, and MZ are not available for this event. Their projects even stripped down to the bare minimum don't give enough room to fit into 1.44 MB. You can still use them if you somehow manage to make the game fit though. Good luck!

- Any questions? You can send a PM to "El_WaKa" on RMN or "WaKa" in the Discord server.

REWARDS:
-----

The best overall game will not only receive "The Golden Disk" achievement but it will also get to pick a free steam key from a list of almost 400+ games! Damn it. I think I missed Iddlai's game.

OH GODS! MY EYES! I know your intent, but please don't! Please just use normal text box colors! I would very much like to understand what I'm doing. I managed to get a letter to someone in some town, but I could not really read what to do after that. Something about going to a Town Leader?

Thank you for playing, I will find a way to solve that problem.(Actually you are sending the letter to another town on behalf of the village chief)
Thank you Piano !

It's always good to receive a first iteration of player feedback so we can improve our games before putting them up on a game page.

You can configure the keys to your liking in the "Settings" from the main menu. The game will also save your choices.

Thanks for the feedback Avee! I agree with all of it. Unfortunately the game is incomplete and it's missing things (such as the option to recruit another character).

To anyone who wants to try out OATH, I recommend downloading the latest version from the gamepage since it's been rebalanced to be reasonable (and a lot of stuff has been fixed). You can play up to the first boss (everything else isn't finished so you can quit there, but you can keep your saves!).

Edit: also, congrats on completing the first boss even though the game was punishingly hard at that point!

Spider Trek
Not bad! I am so grateful that when you die, you just go back to the previous page. Kind of like Choose Your Own Adventure!

Yes, I didn't want to punish the player for their choices, especially since some of the deaths were pretty unforeseeable. (That and I like "achieving" all deaths in games. I'm also hoping to add art for each of them as a bonus in the finished version.)

Thank you for playing, and providing feedback!

I kind of worried I was going to have the grindiest game in this event, but this one's got me beat by a mile. I think I should have probably been level 10 to tackle the mimic in Trial Bleu. 30 damage in a hot was too much for me at level 5. Interesting ideas in this game. As for choices, I feel like they're all bad ones. No matter what I answer, it's wrong.

@pianotm thank you for the feedback! Do you think I should make it less grindy? Do you think it's a problem that all the choices feel wrong? Or do you think I should keep it that way? I'm gonna try and do a better job in the finish version. Thanks again!

I mean, it depends on what you're going for. It really looks like you've made the noble family a bunch of assholes, so while the choices are frustrating, they seem pretty on brand for the characters.

As far as grinding goes, again, based on what you're going for. I had a pretty rough time getting to the outpost and back, and I feel like I needed to fight more enemies. Then I got to the Ice Cavern, and it seemed fine. The enemies there were a logical step up from the enemies outside the home castle and town, which I couldn't really say for the trek to the outpost, but then I made it to the Mimic, and holy crap was he hard and I was definitely too low a level to beat him. I couldn't even land a hit on him. I think you could signal the player that they need to grind more by making the enemies in the first trial harder, because as it is, the Mimic's difficultly just absolutely blindsides you.
I need to get to play all the gams, not a big deal since all are probably short, right? No one did a 5 hour spheal about life and death in a Final Quest Fantasy Dragon format, right? Because I'd fricking love it.

Does a 3-5 hour traditional JRPG count?

Ohh nice <3 It's complete and playable, but it does have a few warts - I'm not quite happy with where the story is at. I'll be releasing a more enhanced version on the forthcoming gamepage probably next week. I don't mind either way, though - it's an event game, and there are gonna be warts and concessions that were made! Gotta own up to them, I guess. XD

Avee/Mirak: The game looks sharp - nice maps and game boy graphics. The music choices are vintage as well. The presentation is certainly on point, and the project definitely has the heart of a community game.

My main issues are with the platforming segments, and that's where I stopped for the time being. Ultimately what killed my momentum was: (1) The wall at the top of the screen, (2) The sheer length of the segment, and (3) Kangaroos charging at me without any real telegraph. The latter one isn't that big of a deal since it only happened once per zone and there were ways to deal with it. I'll have to pick it up again soon :)

Delsin:
A fun little text-based adventure. I got Dennis'd, not gonna lie. The British Empire and their prices...

Oh, and I got made into scrap as well. Rip me.

I got the good ending after maybe 3 or 4 game overs :P

coelocanth:
This was fun while it lasted. I did get a couple of game-overs at the start, but I eventually figured out what was going on. I liked the layout, the lighting effects, and the overall look of this ASCII (?) kind of game. I found a couple of clubs, cleared out the first floor, went to the second floor, but then got sent back to the title screen. :(

Irog:
Ooh, an isometric hack and slash! A pleasant surprise. Holding down ctrl seemed to have a better effect. I tried kiting enemies but I wasn't able to hit them, so I had to face tank a lot of damage. Oh well. I killed 81 enemies.

Swamp Game:
I really liked this one. The monochrome graphics were nice and detailed, the script was well written, and the design of all the branching choices was pretty intuitive. There were only a couple of options that led to surprising game overs - most of the game over options were clearly telegraphed. I never found enough muscle to move the rock, but I was able to gather enough social to claim the swamp as my own. Probably my second or third favorite so far.

Ultros Pacman:
Cute concept, Avee. The game is really fluid too! I played 3 levels - I'm not particularly amazing at Pac-Man, but it wasn't too hard. The portals were a nice twist.

WolfCoder:
Dem angled cliffs ftw. The combat was interesting - I liked having the option to evade attacks. I started mashing enter to knife enemies to death quickly. I did get a game over eventually and the game seemed to freeze up there. Lots of potential here, obviously.

I have no idea what's going on or what I'm supposed to do. There's only one place to go, and absolutely nothing on either map responds to the enter key. The graphics are nice and minimalistic. Your auto title ceiling for the interior is broken.

Yeah, I wasn’t able to finish so I submitted what I had, which was an exterior and interior map. Glad the graphics went over well barring the auto tile issue since that was pretty much all I finished of the game.

Not sure what happened there? The only way to get back to the title screen in code is from a game over or victory screen. (or reloading the browser window)

To be honest, iddalai's work is better than I thought, better than I made. This is the game I want to make. I spent some time playing everyone's games. OATH really fits the style of RTP. Although other people continue to use their own material more, but I still like this one. The experience of the game feels very comfortable.

It's possible to take 0 damage in the whole thing if you're careful. If you fight 1 enemy there's almost no way to lose, 2 and it gets somewhat dangerous, 3 and you're likely dead. If the AI was at full blast mashing the key won't work, but i didn't want the demo to be too challenging.

Villain
This is hard, but I love this. The character doesn't appear to be tied to the tile grid. Aesthetically, it works, but functionally, it makes play really obnoxious because he gets stuck on every little thing imaginable.

Thanks for playing and giving feedback, Piano. For some reason part way through development I made the player's horizontal hitbox wider and that made it clunky to walk through small spaces. I'll change it for the game page version and will also look to make some of the tile graphics wider so they match the 16x16 collision. Thanks again.

I've got some small tidbits of notes for what games I've played from this event so far.

*Edit: I've re-arraigned the post to have the Floppy Disk games at the beginning for the sake of convenience.
