Description
Game Gale has been extended until 12:00 AM GMT on May 17th, 2010!
Game Gale is a Spring Game Making contest, the goal of which is to make a game in just over two weeks! The games will be commented and scored by a panel of judges. A simple theme will be announced when the contest begins to ensure equal development time for all parties involved. Although this is a competition, the main goal is just to have fun making games!
Theme:
Escape (from prison, an alien spaceship, your boring job, a bad relationship, whatever)
The Rules
-The contest with begin at May 1st, 12:00 AM GMT and end at 12:00 AM GMT on May 16th. All entries should be made entirely in this time frame.
-A Theme will be announced that all games must adhere to in some form. The theme could be anything form a setting to an abstract concept.
-You must have permission to use all art, music, materials, etc. And no, Square-Enix, Nintendo, etc did not give you permission to use their graphics. When it is made does not matter as long as you have the rights to it. Judges will favor original content over rips.
-The game must run on Windows XP or higher, the judges should not require any additional components to play your entry.
-Games should contain a text file containing instructions on how to play your game, as well as properly documenting any resources you used!
-Games started before the start time are frowned upon.
-Entries must be submitted before the deadline to be accepted.
-Extensions will be granted only in truly exceptional circumstances. If extensions are given they will apply to all participants.
-Your game can be made in any engine and can be of any genre, not just an RPG.
-Although this is a competition, you are expected to show proper sportsmanlike conduct to your competitors. Trash talking and the like will be frowned upon.
- Most important rule Have fun!

I'm in with Makio :3 We've already got a very rough scenario and gameplay planned out this morning. The last time we did a small project with a time constraint, it was quite fun and we actually got stuff done.
Regarding the idea of using rips, or using rip edits, you are given a little leeway here. Like, if you edit something so that it no longer looks like a rip, I probably won't notice! Just use your own judgment and whatever fits your skill level/time constraints.
If you are looking for music in the public domain, there are many free composers on the internet who allow their work to be used for non-commercial projects as long as you credit them. www.newgrounds.com is a good place to look.
The game can be of any genre, RPG included, but the contest is not limited to RPGs if you want to make something else!

I finally had a fitting idea. I'm away from town for a couple of days, when I'm back I'll start full speed.
I expected something around... 7 entries, tops. Not 70. This is gonna be interesting!
Sadly, my project idea is pretty personal, so I'm not gonna join teams or invite anyone.

Remember that this contest is only a few weeks long! Keep your scope reasonable for such a time frame. We are not looking for a 60 hour epic here. Many entrants dropped out of Game Chill because they tried to be too ambitious and couldn't finish everything in time. I'd hate to see that happen here.

The Public Domain is not a very loose concept. If everything in the game has to be public domain that also means that all assets we make ourselves in the game has to be released to the public domain once we enter the competition?
Also just having permission to use something does not make the item public domain. The RTP for example is quite explicitly NOT in the public domain. it is free to use (perhaps even for commercial use) but it's NOT released into the public domain (as far as I know). The same with creative commons license works (that is fairly popular with music on those free music sites) they are licensed under creative commons NOT in the public domain.

Well, I'm cooler now about this public domain thing because I imagine it won't be taken this literally. I imagine it's not gonna be something like "you used a Lady Gaga song, you're disqualified". I think this is only meant to work as incentive for original art and resources.
Also because RPG Maker 2003 is NOT public domain, and we don't want to have all us old schoolers out of this event!
