Description

Game Chill is a winter game making contest, the goal of which is to make a game in a little over three weeks. Entries will be commented on by a quartet of judges and ranked accordingly. A simple theme is given, but the point is to just have fun making games!

THEME
Design a single winter-themed dungeon for the player to navigate through.

You are required to include in this game at least 3 items from the following list, in some way, shape or form:
  • Gingerbread Men
  • Prayer
  • Frosty the Snowman's hat
  • Hockey
  • Fancy dinner party
  • Bing Crosby

RULES
  • The contest starts now (December 19th, 2013) and goes until January 9th at 11:59pm GMT. Entries must be made during this time-frame. Existing games and projects are not eligible entries for this event.
  • Only completed games are allowed
  • Teams of any size may work together to create a game.
  • All art, music, and sound should be original, public domain or purchased by yourself. When you made it is not important so long as you have proper rights to it. Entrants may stray from this rule if they wish, but should expect harsher judgments towards ripped content than original.
  • Your game must run on the Windows platform. Your game should not require any additional components that a judge would have to purchase or download.
  • Games should come with a readme.txt file of some sort, describing how to play the game, listing any resources used that are not yours, and describing what components the game needs to run.
  • At the end of the contest, 4 judges will rank each game using their own scoring system, and provide commentary for the entries. The final outcome will be determined by the judges. A winner and a runner-up will be selected.
  • Entries not submitted by the end time will not be accepted.
  • Extensions might be possible, but will be granted only by popular vote and judge approval (ie. don't rely on it). If extensions are given, they will apply to everyone, for fairness. If an extension does occur it will be only a few days at most.
  • Your game can be of any genre, not just RPG. (You don't need to have battles, for example!)

HOW TO PARTICIPATE
  • Step 1: Sign up for the contest in the "Registration" section below this event description. You can enter this event solo or as a team. Additionally, you may submit as many games or join as many teams as you'd like.
  • Step 2: Create your game page. Normal submission rules apply.
  • Step 3: Post your download to the game page once it's approved.
  • Step 4: Submit your game download to the contest by using the commands on the upper-right corner of this page.

PRIZES
All participants who successfully submit a valid entry to the event will receive a participation achievement worth 50ms. The winner will receive an additional 100ms achievement for being so awesome. (Hey, not every event needs hundreds of dollars in prizes! This event is "old school RMN".)

Good luck and merry Christmas!

"dungeon" is being used in the loose D&D terms, as in "a particular area in which the heroes can quest" (vs the specific "medieval jail").

Like, the entirety of the original Diablo takes place in a single "dungeon".
Can I clarify that a dungeon consists of one single map, or several maps that comprise a single area?

If so, that means there can't be a town and a cave, because that will be two separate areas, right? Or does the cave count as a dungeon and the town as a general area?
Several maps if you like, and I wouldn't object to there being a "staging" area like a town just outside of the "dungeon". Again, like Diablo!

Basically, I agree with slash.

I have to admit I'm at least slightly tempted to make "How the Vandeli stole Christmas."
Time to show the raw power of RTP...

It's too close to Christmas and I don't feel like looking for too many resources outside of snowmen battlers :D.
Do you get bonus points for combining all the themes?

Sidney Crosby needs to save Bing Crosby from the Gingerbreadmen who kidnapped and plan to sacrifice Bing to the eternal abyss of Frosty's hat with slick hockey dekes but when that fails Sidney and his friends (Bill and, uh, other people with a last name of Crosby. I don't know of any others :( ) at a fancy Christmas party need to pray for Bing's safe escape from the abyss which he does and sings White Christmas banishing frosty's hat into itself!

According to Wikipedia Sports in Canada, "Curling is regarded by Western Canadians to be the most important community sport." So clearly, some people in your neighborhood must like it.

Now, there's a panel of judges of some of my favorite RMNers! :D
Some judges are more your favorite than others, RIGHT?

*Edit: Signed up despite having no ideas. GOOD TIMES!

Yes ... there's an abominable snowman amongst you! I also signed up just to get the notices, unless somebody wants me to help them to make their entry and joins my team.
That banner single-handedly got me to look at this event and join. Although I'm not going to officially sign up because I don't want to be flooded with notices.

Will I be able to register and submit right up until the 9th?
^ You can sign up and then turn notices for the event off in Account -> Subscriptions -> Events. I know Maki did that for the last contest.

But I'm pretty sure I've signed up last minute for an event before with no problem.
Oh, that works! thanks

If anybody wants to join my team, let me know. I always work alone and never finish :/ I plan on doing an NES style game(easier to draw sprites that way), probably some actionRPG or just straightup RPG, likely related in some way to that rockin' banner image. The 3 words I'm definitely going to hit are Gingerbread Men, Frosty the Snowman's hat, and Hockey. Hockey RPG maybe?

I think I might be onto something in regards to a game idea. It might be something of a stretch, but it might just work!
Your game needs a Hockey Stick Scythe™ as an equipable weapon.

Just the old people. If you asked anybody that’s in my age group or younger if they watch or even care about curling, you’ll get a big fat “nope.” (Although, I do enjoy watching it during the Winter Olympics, especially if Canada is doing quite well.)

OMG – I just had the perfect idea for this! (It’s too bad that I’m a judge and I’m god-awfully slow at making games in general), but take a looksie:

Johnny Canuck and Blades The Bruin (Vancouver Canucks and Boston Bruins mascot of the National Hockey League – and I had no idea until just now the actual name of the Bruins mascot ‘till now) are travelling way up north past the frozen tundra in order to get to the mythical city of Toronto, Ontario, hoping to catch a glimpse of the “Holy Grail” (The Stanley Cup). Armed with his trademark toque, incredibly long, badass beard, and his legendary hockey stick simply known as the “Steamer” (from retired Canuck great “Stan ‘The Steamer’ Smyl”) and his travelling companion, Blades The Bruin, must travel and fight their way through a vast array of Gingerbread Men, Abominable Snowmen, and the dreaded “Two Headed Moose” summoned by Brad Marchand, “The Rat King,” along with his trusty associate, the 6’9 gargantuan, Zdeno Chara, “Big Chara,” to cause trouble for our two heroes, hoping that they never reach the promised land.”

(Of course, all the bear can do is make various groans and noises whenever he talks to anybody.)

If anybody can make that, you have my vote. ^^
