SCREENSHOT SURVIVAL 20XX

Posts

@Corfaisus:
Very nice. I imagine that the master closely resembles the Hedonismbot from Futurama.

I don't normally post in-editor screenshots, but it's hard to encapsulate this new area I'm working on in regular size screenshots, so here it is:

and, in-game, for detail:

Obviously, this is still very much a WIP. In fact, this is just a test map- although I liked the way it turned out so much that I will probably use it in game.
Sick stuff, gives me Magi-Nation/Dragon Warrior Monster vibes.

That's looking amazing! And only started as a test map?!
I think the tree map is freaking awesome and totally something to study for inspiration in the future. Nice work!
Looks amazing, Kaempfer. The ladders kinda look like they are horizontal instead of vertical. Not sure what you could do about them to change that, though.

Edit: Putting the horizontal steps in the foreground instead of the background (meaning in front of the rails rather than behind them) might help. Right now they look more like train tracks.
Looking great, Kaempfer! Did you edit tiles together to put that area together, or does it include some custom material as well?

I'm not comfortable with any idea that can't be expressed in the form of men's jewelry

A step closer to finishing the beta monster recruitment processing!
In case player forget what name corresponds to a monster an image of the stored monster appears!

I will play this.

It's the second iteration. The first iteration was pretty different and... not great. I like my test maps to push the tileset I'm making to make sure it's flexible.

It's very closely based on a Ys 4 map, so I take none of the credit!

Now that you've mentioned train tracks I can't unsee them. I'll definitely play around to see if I can find a better solution. Maybe a rope ladder?

It's mostly from the PC-88 version of Ys 4. The canopy looks like a straight rip, but Ys 4 uses an 8x8 grid which made actually ripping it a nightmare, so I reassembled and partially redrew it to make 16x16 tiles out of it. I also made heavy use of autotiles to form a sort of gradient in the canopy. The tree itself is a mixture of FF5 and Ys 4, although I added a few new tiles based on the style. They're the ones that don't look as good. Everything but the planks and the roofs of the huts has been edited, some of it rather heavily, but I still consider it a compilation. There are 15-20 new tiles on the tileset, but they're mostly small stuff.

@Kaempfer- I do the same thing and it's a really good idea! :)

Oh yeah and the train tracks thing, I feel that it might be that the steps are in the back rather than front or in between the beams.
Hey guys, here's attempt at something; it's retextured auto tile grass as a new grass floor instead of a parallax and then putting extras on top as B and C layers. How do you like it?

@Kaempfer F...rikking. Awesome. Love it!
@Tuomo:
It looks like grass, but... it just looks like a grass autotile. Try this: take that grass autotile and remove everything but the edges (where it blends into the dirt). Like, make the whole thing transparent to show a parallax underneath, but save the edges. Next, paint the map you want with the autotile, and the grass parallax will show but still have strong, well-defined edges.

@East:
Thanks :D

Yes, it's autotile. But it's a vastly updated grass autotile with a completely new texture.

Regular autotile grass.

My grass.

I get what you're saying but I think that'd not look good since the dark areas would cause a square like feel when placing the grass very easily if you put the dark edges directly into autotiles. The solution that I thought is to have this as a grass floor using the autotile and then have a seperate grass spots on B and C layers. This way I could choose where the spots will have the grass stand out and when it won't.
@Kaempfer
Looks very nice!

Rather than have a group chat option in the Menu hitting the A button will cause the lead player to speak to a random party member.
The amount of things they say, where they say, and when they it I have to tweak and add on. Another tedious feature...
@Slimeborgi Whoa, that's actually really interesting idea. Also, as usual, I love that art with those colors so much <3

First map in a new area of my game, meaning this is basically going to be the template for a whole bunch of other maps, so naturally I need a lot of criticism and feedback. Thanks~

I personally love it Pancaek, if that's helpful.
Are the colors changing or static, Pancaek?

Looks good, I like the art style.
- Site was down and now I double-posted...
I'm not sure I can help much pancaek, other than the fact it looks great. Don't forget to have variety with the floor levels. Like, don't make the whole cave one flat surface. If that makes sense. Maybe add some floor cracks/holes?

Also, I think you had the biggest improvement I've seen on this site yet in regards to art. Great work so far!
