FF7 REMAKE. IT'S A THING.
Posts
It seems like a foolhardy thing to expect them to keep the turn based combat system, but god damn it would be fantastic if they did. All they really need to do is tweak the enemies/materia to give the game more strategic depth.
Whatever they do with the combat just please keep the Kingdom Hearts influence far the fuck away from it. Those games are awful.

I did, but until it comes out, it's just a twinkle in Square's eye.
I'd more hyped for a Xenogears remake over Final Fantasy VII, but a decent remake of FFVII could still be a great thing to see, and I never thought about it'd happen in my lifetime, considering how many rumors were started and squashed over the past decade.
So, yes, I agree with you. It could very well be that SE is in full swing with this, and if so then the PS4 will have some golden days in the not too distant future.
But I'm also inclined to think this is going to be similar to the Versus XIII announcement back in 2006, and a remake is still another 5 to 10 years away and won't be released until the PS5, at which time we'll then be told the original remake development was scrapped, things were cut because they either didn't fit the new vision or couldn't be added due to inconsitency with the new mechanics, and the game took a life of its own and became Final Fantasy XVI instead of the remake we were expecting.

I just don't see the point...
It will be interesting to see what changes they make to the gameplay, if that's what they're going to do, but at the same time I'd prefer if they made a new game using those "new concepts". If they're not going to change the gameplay much and it's just a graphics update then big-fucking-whoop I don't play games for the graphics.
I mean, I'd agree with this, but I'd like the remake to be fairly straightforward so that a younger generation of gamers can appreciate the game for what it is.
Locke's premonitions are going to be mostly accurate, though.
Doubt it. And I doubt LockeZ's fears are founded. Of course there are some things about the remake that everyone may not like, but you'd have to be on crack to assume that Square Enix hasn't been paying attention to what people have been saying about the Compilation, and their work in general over the past few years.
I seriously doubt they'd bank their most ambitious venture ever over some easy to avoid bullshit.

okay, but it is still a kind of sad day when a remake is "their most ambitious venture ever"
Also, I should actually finish the original one day. Remarkably I have avoided many spolars to this day (aeris dies I hear??)
but in Wreck-It Ralph there is evidence of the truth!

Ideologically, I'd agree. I'd hope to be able to say that FFXV would be their most ambitious venture, and that might still be the case. However I don't feel bad about saying that a total and complete creative reimagining of their most successful and influential title ever is the most ambitious project they've undertaken.
They know that this could potentially make or break them, and I really think they're going to pull out the stops, reexamine FFVII in context, and take this really seriously.

I heard Nomura was in charge or directing or something so it'll probably miss a console generation until Tabata is forced to step in and clean shit up again. Hard to say since all we got so far was some cgi garbage but the parallel are real easy to make.
All I want is the 'it hurts' in glorious HD and 'let's mosey' Cloud
I do know that I've seen at least several dozen people say they're literally buying a PS4 today because of the remake announcement. I can't say if they're gonna put their money where their mouth is, and I can't say if all of those same people are definitely going to buy the remake when it comes out.
However, I can say that if my observation is anything so far, the sentiment of 'why remake it nobody's gonna buy it we already played ff7' seems to be really dead wrong.

Wait... It's not coming for the PC?
I could see myself shilling out for a PS4 if the remake ends up being
A) Actually really good
B) Always exclusive to PS4 (although I'm thinking they'll bring it to as many platforms as they can given the amount of money that they stand to make)
I'm definitely hoping to be playing it on PC though.
Sadly we won't be getting any info about the game until this Winter, according to Square's E3 conference (which was super underwhelming btw).

Timed exclusive for the PS4 is what I heard. I'd assume SE has learned it's lesson that it isn't a big boy anymore and is using middleware like UE4 for this and a PC port would be simple in that scenario.

It probably will be but it'll be first on PS4.

I've heard rumors that Sony is helping fund this. Not sure if it's true or not, but even if it is, I doubt SE would grant overall exclusion for all but Sony in this day and age, when so many are clamoring for SE titles on multiple platforms. To do otherwise could create anomosity amongst the fans.
However, if Sony is funding some money, I could see SE offering a timed exclusive, as others have suggested, allowing Sony to have first dibs to potentially drive up the sales of the PS4 before offering it to other platforms. How long that timed exclusivity would be, though, is really anybody's call.
The downside of any exclusion, even a timed one, is that those who need it right away will reach out to the platform that's offering it first, and this could potentially cause a nose-dive in sales to other platforms from people who have already purchased it on PS4 and don't want to buy it again.
Edit: Hopefully, if this succeeds, it proves to be a template for newer games in the future (whether Final Fantasy XVI and onwards or some new titles), and not so much a template on how to remake Final Fantasy VIII, IX, and X. Not that I would mind updates to those games as well, but the more they focus on remakes the less they focus on newer games.
author=Satedauthor=JosephSeraphIf it's a hipster thing to say then so be it. For me, graphics are at the very bottom of the list when it comes to important things in a game. As long as the graphics are serviceable, other things (like gameplay) are infinitely more important.
Saying "I don't play games for the graphics" is a hipster thing. I mean, I don't actively pursue graphics when looking for games but I can appreciate a nice art direction yes? It's part of the pack.
I am tempted by this for the graphics. But if the gameplay is the same old I guess I have to admit I'm not going to jump on it. Now if it turned into a third person action game with party members (Like Mass Effect or something, with the two AI companions). I would be all over that shit.
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

author=LightningLord2What they need to do is fix and rebalance the materia system, but what I absolutely guarantee they're going to do instead is completely remove it, and replace it with nothing.
Wait, the original wasn't a mash A to win game? I'm being honest when I say most of Final Fantasy - I tried out every game from 1 to 7 - plays exactly like this. Not gonna bother playing a 40 hour snoozefest to fight the one and only battle that requires any form of thinking.
The team that made Bravely Default isn't working on this game. The lead director for this game is Tetsuya Nomura, who despite being the biggest person in the company, has never actually directed a game outside the Kingdom Hearts series. He's the art director for the entire series from FF7 on though, and the movie director for FF7: Advent Children, and the guy responsible for all the belts and zippers.
I just hope they bring back Ito for the gameplay designer. He was the gameplay/combat designer in FF1 through FF9, the lead game director for FF6 and FF9, leader of the emergency team that took over FF12 after the entire original team ragequit and left the company halfway through the game's development, and the designer of Triple Triad in FF8. He's the only person left at Square Enix that I have any respect for. He's not one of the three people credited in the E3 cinematic, though, which worries the hell out of me that they're going to use the FF15 team instead.
My faith in this project is so low, I'm immune to magic.

yes, they're totally going to completely get rid of the most iconic gameplay feature about final fantasy 7 and replace it with nothing
even when every compilation game, no matter how terrible, all had some iteration of materia. all of them.
Nier 2 developed by Platinum Games and still directed by Yoko Taro.
Fuck now I need to get a PS4. Hell fucking yeah best e3 news.

Yes, that is what I'm saying, Feld. I realize you're emphasising how dumb that would be because you're being sarcastic, but read your own post again, and imagine that you're instead emphasising it because you're trying to point out how terrible Square Enix has become.
