MAFIA GUIDE; HOSTING, SUGGESTIONS, AND DISCUSSION

Nothing reveals Humanity so well as the games it plays. A game of betrayal, where the most suspicious person is brutally murdered? How savage.

I was planning to run a simple 7 vanilla, 2 goon game at some point, but the queue is full until like March, and there's still the Dangan Ronpa Forum Game I need to host as well. Also a 9-player game might be too small for the amount of active players there are right now.

How's the DRFG coming along, by the way?

Vanilla sounds nice right now. My favorite icecream is vanilla.
I dont want games to try and top eachother and I'm not fond of "rp" mafia games (although that style is the first I joined) but that's why I will probably skip liberty's. I dont like having to get characters and items and stuff :(
I'm fine with characters, items, etc ala LockeZ's game but lord do not ask me to post in character haha.
I feel like roleplaying is antithetical to the idea of playing mafia in the first place
I don't know how you find out who is acting weird when everyone is, by law, required to act weird
The only solution I can see is making it very power role heavy and dependent on night actions but, that is sort of still a game of sudoku and not mafia imo.
edit: please look forward to pokemon mafia, where you can only post the name of your pokemon. thats it. you can add punctuation marks to indicate if you are saying 'pikachu' in an interrogative or declarative manner and you can emphasize syllables but thats IT

Ok, so suppose you were to add a thing like 'Kupo' to the post or an introverted aside in italics. You think that would deter my read of your post? If anything it offers a lot of opportunity to slip up.
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

That is just discount roleplaying. It's still pretty bad but way less annoying than a proper roleplaying mafia like Kloe's murder mystery, where people were spending all their time talking to NPCs, and choosing places to visit/objects to examine, performing in-character actions like "I shy away from the dark basement, despite the sobbing coming from within. I stutter as I blame my claustrophobia unconvincingly. In truth I'm more interested in interrogating Gourd_Clae about why he would have hidden the fact that his father was killed by this same murderer. But I periodically glance disapprovingly at the rest of the party as if to wonder which of them will godownstairs."
From now on I'm only going to schedule only the next few games so we can get a feel for what type of game we want to play next. Having so many in advance is daunting.
Vanilla games are very simple to run and probably wouldn't last as long so I can slot it in between somewhere if need be.

Honestly, I've got a much more involved RP game in the works but that'll be way down the path (way way down) and would be very guided (a better version of the river boat one I held way back - basically more planned out).
The current one is RP in that, sure, post as your characters but it's just flavour not actually going to mess with the gameplay itself. There's no clues or external forces at work, just you lot looking for the mafia... only in character. If your character just so happens to act like you do when you play mafia I ain't got no qualms with that. You're not about to be forced to go play minigames, that's for sure. XD
I learned my lesson.

Libby, I think life is better when no lessons are learned.
Also, I'd love to break your game again, and I don't know what I'd do with myself if I could not do that.

No, but if my 'character' is, say, an underfed cockney pickpocket, or an underpaid hive-mind alien who also happens to be a death star technician, then in order to really post "in character", I would have to adopt a voice that isn't mine imo. this would make all my posts, and the posts of everyone else doing this, feel manufactured and artificial, because they would be. analyzing which posts feel artificial is a big part of mafia, since all scumposts will be that way, to some degree. but in rp-heavy games in the past, it's been impossible.
I've actually seen someone do the pokemon thing and of course it was impossible to read them and we yelled at them to stop. basically there are degrees.
This OP one will be my first RP experience I think.
The one we ran about prisoners in the RMNverse was kinda RP, but really it had very little of it, iirc?

Would there be any interest in small, quick games on slack?

Like 30 minute games? Yeah, definitely.

Eh, idk, I take that long to write like a couple posts of Mafia, I'd be sitting there thinking most of the time.
nobody would be expecting/wanting long posts in a chatroom game

author=DudesoftIt wasn't really RP except for me. I was constantly speaking in verse and everyone else was super annoyed by it. I am amazed I lived through that game.

Yeah, but not this week. I think it'd be a lot of fun.
If someone wants to run a vanilla game or something, I'm putting OP mafia on back-burner. Some things came up irl (and there's just not as much interest in the game - no numbers means no play) so it might be best just to jump back a bit in the line.
I was actually not sure about the timing anyway since it got bumped up by someone not having their game, iirc, so it seems I was right to be a bit worried. >.<;
