Thanks for adding me Marrend!

Thanks LordBlueRouge! That's good to hear.

I wish I had more games from other users to add to that list, but I mostly only played much older RPG Maker games this year :/

There's so many games each year and a lot of good ones!

Edit: Holy Crap! Beetle Ninja looks cool!
Man, this year is really crazy in terms of releases.

I hope Soma Union, Beetle Ninja, Shooty and the Catfish, and Weird and Unfortunate score big. They really were great experiences.

I need to touch on a couple more before the year ends too... can’t wait to see how everyone does.

Thanks for adding me Marrend!

I figured if I wanted to fill LBR's shoes this year, and that he was super awesome last year, I had to do it not just "right", but "damn right".

*Edit: Well, at least as "damn right" as my humble abilities can manage.

I'll throw my hat in the ring to say Calunio's THERAPIST: Mind Manager is his magnum opus and one of the finest most innovative games I've seen made in the RPG Maker engine. Excellent, excellent game. Underrated, I feel.

Also, what I've played of Weird and Unfortunate has been outstanding. I haven't had the chance to play many other games, though, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

I second THERAPIST. It was fantastic and one of my favorite indie experiences of the year.
Before I forget again, I just wanna say thanks to rpgmakeraddict for adding screenshots, they do a lot to fill in the blanks for describing most of these games. Considering the year we had, I think this is a good selection of games to choose from. Weird and Unfortunate, Therapist mind manager, BeetleNinja and MoonSong are probably the strongest contenders this year.

But yeah, if you guys know any others feel free to mention them here.
This is all very last minute so i'm proud of whatever we're able to manage here.

EDIT: Before I forget, I wanna mention Darken's "Train Trip" for 2020's most technical prowess award. It was part of the "A Game By it's Cover" Jam over on itch.io where they take a famicart cover art and turn it into a game:

What made this standout to me was the small the developer diary Darken wrote, where he sort of detailed the process using Godot, but also the references he lists from films and animation in order to create it. Very interesting read and probably worth checking out if you ever wanted to get into making 2D on 3D background games like Grandia, Thousand Arms, Xenogears etc. It's a neat little tech demo, but it's really well done.

It might not win this year, but I feel like it's worth mentioning when talking about games from 2020.

(gif from the making of blog post)

But yeah, keep up the good work everyone. It's really cool to see all the games that we have this year.

Oh shoot, we forgot about Starmage's game, Perceiving Shapes actually! Apparently it won a game of the year award from a small zine, so it seems like a crime not to mention it for the misaos.

Frogge! you read my mind!
I've already added it to my post and submitted a review.

Graphically it is a nice game, but it is also FULLY VOICED! Whoa, I was impressed. Awesome. A cool short horror game.

For a moment, I was thinking/confusing that with Rave Hart, Starmage's other game that he posted a review request for. It's a commercial game, and thus, would not be eligible for a Misao. However, Perceiving Shapes seems to be a different story altogether!

Since it's now been mentioned twice, I'll add it to the OP! ;)

I've no doubt WaUTaH is going to win Game of the Year. It's such a well-loved game by the community. Plus, the fact that it's such a well-made game that it truly deserves the award. There's just this... magic in it that might be hard to follow up. Like, unity's user-title is "You're magical to me", but it seems to work both ways: she's magical to us.
I agree. Well, and I am pretty sure that WaUTaH will win also the Best Game Title Award, no contest here! =) (by the way those portraits are great... Dottie looks SO sweet ^^)
I think WAUTAH will perform exceptionally well. Though there are also some other heavy-hitters like Therapist, Beetle Ninja, and Midnight Train that may also win big. This is going to be a very competitive year with so many big releases!
I am shocked, SHOCKED, that I haven't seen Slimes mentioned here (or maybe my exhaustion has blinded me).

(Ok, WOW, the youtube video link thingy just will not cooperate with me tonight!)

It had a demo last year, but the actual release was this year.

Now, granted, it's the only full game I've played on this site this year, but it's the only RPGmaker game I've played thus far (ever) that I've felt comfortable giving a flawless score to.

The art is stunning,

The combat makes VERY clever use of a very limited set of enemies and no stat gains, but manages to feel like it intensifies as you progress,

And the story...My goodness the story. It's brutally dark at times, with moments of humor here and there, and it leads to the most cathartic ending I've played in a longass while.

I don't give perfect scores easily. There's always something I can nitpick, or something I can say needed to be a little better to warrant a perfect score.

With Slimes, the handful of small issues I had with it (you have to manually use the reload skill between rights, etc) were small enough that I could not justify knocking any points off.

The fact it only has 58 downloads is shocking to me. It deserves more. So much more. <3

Aegix, you might be using the wrong URL for our YouTube tag to function properly. The correct version would look more like...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8mc6gvwO968

...this. Minus the URL-tag, because our code-tag always adds it without fail.

Also, according to my notes, no, Slimes has not been mentioned yet, and the "Nominate" button is active! Thanks for getting the word out!

I haven't beaten it yet, but I've been playing thru Slimes and I agree, it deserves to be on here :D
yeah Slimes was a highlight of 2019 too. I kind of missed out on it's release during 2020. I would've mentioned sooner. I thought it was a commercial game. I wish I knew, otherwise I would've mentioned it sooner. The story is really well done.

This is another game I haven't gotten around to finishing yet, but have already mentioned at least 3 times on discord and the forums. It's hard to put into words why I like this game so much, but I'm going to try: Upon starting Slimes, the story immediately grabs you, and throws you into a stand off with a disembodied villain, who endless taunts you. The villain even teaches you how to reload your gun with an in game tutorial, before telling you that "it's not gonna matter, because you can't win" - This is actually a reoccurring nightmare of Julius Anderson's, a member of the Church of the Holy Heart, who is now being sent to eradicate this evil that has descended upon the earth. Julius Anderson is also kind of an asshole. He even lashes out at the Healer who just joined your party. Who is Julius Anderson? What's his problem? Why is he so on edge? Why is this guy such an asshole? Until I find out more, be sure to check out this really cool demo. Don't let the minimalist graphics fool you. This should be your first pick for Excellent in Narrative for 2019. A very compelling read. -- LordBlueRouge
