Date, create, and share!

Assuming the role of a male high school student in Japan, the player will meet, interact with, and date a number of female characters with the goal of winding up with one of them at the end of a 101-day calendar. Yeah, you've seen this all before...or have you?

In other romance sims, there's little reason to replay the game again once you've pursued all the characters you're interested in. But Heartache 101 allows for a variable female cast. The number of characters in the game is completely open-ended!

You can create new characters and add them to the game, share them with other users, and add characters created by other users. You can create the images for custom characters from a template, or use images you created yourself, or images from any source. (only "standing" images of characters can be imported; there is no event CG in the game) A simple scripting language is provided for writing story events. You can also customize some of the music.

The game system itself is in part a visual novel interface with gameplay that include conversational decision-making, board game-like mechanics, stat management, financial management, and more.

New game forthcoming, some might like to know

Since I've been asked many times if I would ever make a sequel to Heartache....

Well this is not a sequel. In very many ways it's radically different. But some might find that it partially retains a bit of the same feel?

So I'm posting the first public screenshot here, and whoever is interested, look for a game page up in the next week or two with the title "Where One Citizen". Game is not complete yet, but after 10 years of development it's about time to start showing it!

Well, all you can tell him is that user-created content isn't regulated by you or me or anyone. I mean, you're welcome to try contacting the authors of those characters and pass on the feedback, but who knows if they're still making content.

I do realize there is somewhat of a demand for players to be able to gauge the quality of downloadable content before they download it, but I don't have an answer for that now.

edit: (since Dozen posted just before me)
I'm not sure I understood the Deviantart comparison. Is there something wrong with Deviantart?

Not quite, but not entirely different.

Bluntly put? Yes. On DeviantArt you can find the best freelancer artists on the internet, and ten times as much degenerates, idiots and subpar artists who never improve because they are encouraged by the former two, which in certain circles has (undeservingly) lowered the community's reputation - granted, it doesn't make any sense, but when it comes to how they feel, people don't give a damn about sense. We could say that we don't want the easily influenced around, of course... and alienate 20-70% of the planet.

Just take a look at KS! We all know it is not what it sounds like because we hear people say it's not what it damn sounds like, and nobody would take their time to tell you that if it was a bad game. They had a horrible premise(that is, a game about dating disabled girls with a dev team handpicked from otakus, Deviants and 4chan boarders) but word of mouth in itself has achieved what marketing proffessionals usually just dream of - everyone in the target audience has heard of them by now, and all they hear is positive, because the game is just that good. And Four Leaf published it, a freeware indie game, in January. This year.

With this I'm only saying that Four Leaf is awesome, not that everyone who has heard about Heartache should rupture their vocal chords with a fansquee. But most can never achieve the quality they thrive for, simply because nobody ever could wish realistically for anything - all you need is a bad mindset. In that case any result usually ends up about half as good as intended. At best. So if we say our work should be 'kinda fine', we might as well could drop the Medium Girl template and draw doodles for tachies.
But don't you think that people can be reasonably expected to recognize the distinction between official content and user-generated content? With KS and the vast majority of games out there, official content is all that there is. Thus the quality is expected to remain consistent.

When it comes to user-generated content, quality ranges wildly. This is true of other games with user-generated content I'm familiar with, such as DWI/Stepmania for instance, or LBP for another. The vast number of poorly made levels for LBP doesn't reflect poorly on the quality of LBP--it's rightly regarded as one of the best titles on the ps3. (It does make it absurdly hard for new authors putting out quality levels to get noticed amidst the sea of mediocrity, but that's another, perhaps inevitable, problem altogether)

I admit that the way the website works is not optimal. Users cannot update their uploads, not to mention the upload limitations, and lack of any kind of rating system to help players pick what to download. Perhaps when I get my computer back next year I can make some time to improve things.
Note to self: Get more comfortable with perl. The perl script I wrote for displaying uploaded files on Heartache's website is in fact the only perl script I have ever written.

Now that I think of it, I might have also promised triad2 assistance, since he wanted a scene with Masako. It might have been Seira, since I recall talking to him about how Masako would be able to see through <player>'s lies about the beaver attacks.

*Edit: My response, by the way, read like this:

The DLC that is available were not a collaborative effort. They were made by individuals. It is also very much unregulated, as the main site accepts anything that's below 5MB in size. I'm not sure how much we can do on that front. What we have done, though, is set aside a Finished Content page on RMN, which is probably the best indicator of who are the characters that have the least issues. There was a push to have reviews within the comments of that thread to assist users in finding the best content available. As of this writing, there's only been one such review, but we hope to see more in the future.

As for fixing already-made content, I would suppose that it would be done on an author-by-author basis. The creator of Rika, LordNight, has told us that he's busy with school, but will return to work when he has more time. The creator of Seria, triad2, to my knowledge, has not been in contact with us, and the possibility of someone adopting his work has arisen.

*Edit 2: I should review 21 Ways and Watanabe Junko at some point...

I'd be happy to adopt 21 and finish her route. Can I call dibs?
@Marrend
That's a good response.

@Dozen
It would certainly be all right with me! I think authors building off of work done by other authors is in keeping with the spirit of things. When you upload it to the website it will be separate from dude797's package, which is only fair to dude797 who isn't around to approve.

Oh btw, Dozen, I think you should apply those fixes to Lambaria Yuu that I mentioned back in this discussion so that you can update the finished content page with a working version.

On that... who will adopt Yuu?

...

Why do I feel like everybody is pointing at me?

I can adopt/fix Yuu. Just don't expect me to do anything about her until I clear off Fran!

*Edit: As an additional aside, I've not entirely forgotten about Fran. It's just that, well, this is the Month of the Event.

Actually, I fixed Yuu already~
I did, A looong time ago.
It was really fustrating; I had to rename the text file, create a new profile, and redo all the information about Yuu. I can't believe I sat through all that.

I wouldn't re-do her profile at all. Re-make her tachie? Perhaps. Edit her story to make more sense? Definitely. Give credit to the original creator, and make notes on what was changed? To do otherwise would be plagiarizing.

Don't just talk about it, then. If it's finished, show. We'll see if it beats Marrend's to it.

Well, if it's already done, all TtheDragon needs to do is post it. All I've done is apply flowertheif's patch!

I meant yours as in what you've made when you finished it, Marrend.

*strokes chin*
I think the tachie is fine but the story...! Mos Def.
Alright...
Where can I contact KimotoDragoon so I can have his permission to edit Yuu's story? There's....alot of notes that I have to remember on what was changed.
Geez.
~T
Also, I swear.
I'll probably mess up Yuu's tachie horribly even if I slightly touch it. I don't have enough experience in my physical epitome to actually...upgrade Yuu.
This shall be a collaboration then!
MARREND. You got ze tachie while I will work on the story~
ANY QUESTIONS.

One: Did I ever agree to a collaboration?

*Edit: I don't mean to curtail bouts of inspiration. If you think you have a story, by all means, write it! If you're a little shaky on the tachie, you do have the option of leaving it alone.
