Fey

A tale of two unlikely friends struggling to piece together their broken pasts.

Everyone has or will face loss of life and faith. These pivotal times are part of each and everyone of our spiritual journeys. Why then do some people emerge from the crisis with their life and faith intact, while others give up on hope, a future, and their reason for living? For Landon, a young boy now burdened by the mistakes of his past, such moments have weighed heavily on his conscience. It isn't until a mysterious shape shifter named, Picaro, draws him back into his broken past, that Landon can find the means and strength to move on with his life.

The spiritual successor to Darkness Shall Bleed, Fey allows players to take control of, Landon Ferngrass and embark on a journey that will push him to his emotional, intellectual and physical limits as he tries to set his past right and discover the truth behind Oak Island and the legendary artifact of souls, the Fire Pearl.

EXCITING NEWS!

Hello!

It's been a while, but I'm back with some news that I'm excited to share. If you're a fan of anything I've produced, most recognized example being Fey (https://rpgmaker.net/games/778/), then boy oh boy do I have news for you. With the advent of RPG Maker (officially) and the ability to publish to itch.io and Steam, I've been hard at work on What's Left (link below). It is a complete re-imagining of Fey, what it was intended to be. It is important to note that this is not just an official release, but something fresh, new, and more importantly... whole. The original version of Fey was, regrettably, rushed, and over half of the game was cut due to too many reasons to list here. But as time passed, it strengthened the sense of unfinished business. That and some persistent fans and friends finally tipped the scales and I began to revise, expand and rebuild the game from the ground up. What was a couple hour experience now spans 6-8, more if you consider the new side quests, hidden areas, secrets to uncover, tools and weapons, locations, story, dialogue, the ability to purchase a house, get a citizenship, buy furniture for your home, explore chunks of open world and etc. The list goes on, and on, and on. Some more notable things are the revised combat system, the ability to use swap weapons on the fly, the new menu, introduction and branching cutscenes. What I felt was a unique game (with the aim for it to play like a movie) is now a complete experience.... Oh, and for my fans (by popular request) there is a TON more Picaro, including the ability to utilize his unique powers at will. For more information, and to keep up to date on the progress, (Steam page is under construction, along with Youtube page, itch.io, and various others) clink the link below and subscribe. You can also sneak a peak at some more videos and screenshots on my Twitter and Instagram! Make sure to follow on your preferred platform! I appreciate the support and hope you'll share my excitement as I move toward release with in the coming months!!!

Hey, I played the 2012 demo and I'm glad to hear this is finished! I'm playing it now. Your art is absolutely stunning -- after seeing so many games that rely on character portraits alone to express emotion, I'm amazed at how expressive your sprites alone are! There's so much detail to the environments, too.

It's interesting to see the changes from the demo. I'll have to see how things go.

That's great to hear! I'm really glad that you are noticing all of the differences and changes, lol. I hope it lives up to expectations and thanks for the compliments! I feel very strongly that the expressions carried through animation carry the story, so that's what I aimed for. :D Thanks again and you'll have to let me know what you think when you finish it!

I hope your ass is clean, because it is about to be kissed....

In the handful of years I have been playing RM games, I don't think I have seen one so polished, especially created using RM2k3! It is graphically gorgeous, the story is engaging, and the gameplay is EXTREMELY tight for it's style. I have played a handful of other action games that used the 2k3 engine (and others) and I feel like Fey masters the genre. It's easy enough to learn quickly and get used to, yet difficult enough that you will die from time to time. I am always a bit skeptical about action games, but I am very pleased to say that this bad boy obliterated my skepticism rather quickly and soundly. Kudos, good sir!

I would like to say that you can expect a review from me when I finish this game, but I already have about 5 games that I need to finish because I have been too lazy busy to finish. Either way, if I do find the time to pop out a review, I will do so!
By the way.

Are there any treasures in the pirate ship that can only be gotten during the escape sequence (when it's burning up)?

Edit: Oh, also, there's a bug in chapter 4.

During the stealth section, if you're caught by the guard that appears on the upper balcony, he won't appear on successive trips.

No I purposely chose to remove him due to the fact that he would be able to see you before you see him. But thank you very much for the heads up. As for the fire sequence, there isn't anything new to get that you couldn't get before the fire.

Thank you very much. I'm very flattered. I'm glad you're enjoying it and I eagerly anticipate your review!!! XD
Congratulations on finishing it man, nice job! Fey has been my favorite rm2k3 game since I first played the demo and it has been a huge source of inspiration for working on my own rm2k3 game. I'm definitely excited to see that it is completed, I can't wait to see the changes between the demo and the completed game and finally just to play past that pirate ship, haha. Downloading now, Can't wait to play!

Thank you!!! I'm really excited for you to see past the pirate ship to because I feel that while it love the first part of the game, we've all been playing it for years, so... But I can't wait to hear what you think about everything else in there!!! Thanks again!
Oh, so other weirdness in chapter 4: After the battle with the soldier at the end of the stealth sequence, you can leave the room without the horn, but Landon will use it in the cutscene anyway. Does the same thing happen if you don't take the whip?

Edit: Also, I have no idea how I'm supposed to do the QTE.

Edit edit: Never mind I was just silly for thinking that a game over screen actually meant game over.

lol, no the horn is just a treasure. You don't need to take it, but the whip is an item that must be taken, you can't leave without it or the map. Everything else is optional.
Well, I just finished. That sure was a thing.

I felt the ending was a bit...weak, honestly. I suppose I went in with the expectation that it'd be a full-on tragedy, and that's not really how it turned out, so maybe I'm experiencing some cognitive dissonance? Rosy just showing up and saying "so by the way everything you did was unnecessary" made things feel a tad bit pointless. The real tragedy seems to revolve around Picaro pulling a heroic sacrifice, but I never really formed enough of an emotional attachment to him for it to have any impact -- he just wasn't around often enough. And the jerkface god got away completely unscathed! >:(

I felt the flashback scenes weren't integrated that well, either. I can see what you were trying to do in dragging them out, but after the long, long bit with the first chapter, the subsequent ones felt way too short and I still didn't feel like everything was quite explained.

I did like the individual bits, though, even though I'm more lukewarm towards the overarching story. I frequently kept expecting something horrible to happen at every turn (like Brown or Edgar or the vammits stabbing Landon in the back at the last moment), and was pleasantly surprised that you went the "people are generally decent" route instead. It's also nice to see that Landon isn't a completely cynical, amoral antihero either.

I'm not entirely sure what the purpose of the treasures were? There were enough silver pieces floating around that I never needed to sell them, and I still got most of the skills (and the idol thing). I thought they'd eventually be used for something, but apparently not.

It seems a bit strange that the idol is the only thing you can buy. There was a pot thing on display as well, but examining it just got me the "out of stock" message. Does the idol impact anything?

Also, how old is Landon anyway? For some reason I thought he was 13 in the demo, but since he's sporting facial hair in the epilogue I presume he's a little bit older.

As for my decision with the story, I understand where you are coming from but the point of the story isn't about bringing back Rosy. It's bigger than that, it is about forgiveness, good people being forced into terrible situations and how they deal with it and as for the entire story being a waste of time, I guess if you look at it from a cliche sort of way. But the fact that Picaro reach resolution, Landon was able to let go of everything and had closure and was able to move on with his life, and he sister was freed. To counter this, Landon's life moves forward with his new friend, Edgar Hadoc, almost like a fatherly role model, and because of everything he's been through he becomes a treasure hunter for hire, this leads to the discovery that Landon's grandfather didn't die from the heart attack. Life goes on.

As for the flash backs, The only reason I did the first one as a fully playable sequence, was to help introduce the player to the games mechanics and to help form a connection and bond to the life that Landon once had. This helps get the stark contrast of how his life has changed and how he's changed. Also the player is partly responsible for what has happened to Landon because they played it.

That's what I was aiming for for the most part and I feel like because the game doesn't follow most of the cliche endings, it will always have a split audience. It's a story about the people and human trials, and not everyone likes that, regardless... I'm glad you at least found some enjoyment in it. :)

As for the Idol, the tiki when purchased doubles any money you find in the game. As for the treasures, you can sell them to get more money in order to purchase skills. The pot is the health upgrades. If you happen to miss any what so ever, you can purchase them for a hefty amount, hence another use for the treasures, so that the game caters to any play style. If you just want to play and run through then you aren't completely punished for it. Same with the skills, a lot of them can either be earned for less or free if the time is taken to explore and if not then they can be purchased from the store for a hefty amount. The exact amount of silver in the game, when fully collected works out to about 30 pieces more than the total amount for everything you "could/can" purchase.

As for Landon, as a child he is about 13 and a half, by the end of the game, roughly 4 years, he is almost 18 and is just starting to grow facial hair.
Thanks for finishing it; playing it will be a great way to spend my vacation days =]

Hey no problem thanks for the support and I hope you thoroughly enjoy it! :)
Okay, so I played and beat it yesterday.

First off, I definitely enjoyed it. It was extremely fun and I found myself not wanting to stop playing it. The graphics and how the game plays are astonishing, and there are a few set-pieces and scenes that were just insane for an rpg2k3 game.

I was disapointed with the overall game length though.. It only took me around two and a half hours to beat, and by the end of the game it just felt kind of..incomplete, atleast story-wise.

Major spoilers (though trying to tell in a non-spoiling way):

I felt the antagonists needed more of a larger role. Like I really enjoyed the entire section of Devlins, and I was thinking the whole time like man these guys are gonna have a huge part in this story.. And.. they don't really go anywhere.
One of the things that kept my interest for this game was the character of Picaro. I was intrigued by what his/it's back story would be, his overall motives for helping Landon out and how exactly they met. I was extremely disapointed to find out that Picaro is oddly absent from the entire second-half of the game, and really hinders the players emotional attachment to him. I definitely think Picaro should have been constantly around as a guide and mentor, to connect the player moreso with that character. The other thing that was a bit put off by was the twist at the ending. I feel like it was an outstanding plot twist for sure, don't get me wrong, but I think it doesn't fit. I just think it doesn't fit how at the beginning the way the monkey acts does not make sense at all as to why it acts that way (behaving badly), and why it runs into the temple of all places.

DO NOT READ UNLESS YOU HAVE BEATEN FEY, SPOILERS (moreso):
Like it seems to be a complete change of character considering how at the beginning the monkey is mischievous and doing crazy things, and then by the end of the game completely is wise and noble. I feel like that deserves more information, maybe motives as to why the monkey was the way it was at the beginning. Like maybe it thought within the temple had an answer/solution/cure to it's situation, so it went inside to find it but did not find what it was looking for? I dunno, I just think it needs to be elaborated on to establish that connection.
That is my only main nitpick of the storyline.

Again, I loved the game. I feel like you have accomplished some amazing things with rpg maker, and you created a story and finished it beginning to end. I just feel a little empty for where the story was going and for the things I felt were left out or not elaborated on, and some elements that were completely dropped.

Hm, I think I have to echo this as well. There were a wide variety of well-done bits, but they didn't really last long enough to build up the right atmosphere.

In particular, the survival horror-esque bits at the end of chapter 6 were very good, but they lasted for all of like five minutes, which really isn't enough to build up a true sense of dread. Maybe it would have been better if that chapter was more devoted to it? Like, maybe if Landon didn't get a weapon at all and was shadowed by the changeling the entire time.

Well regardless, I appreciate all of the feedback and sorry it didn't hold up to your expectation. I have a focus group for Fey tomorrow to look over everything. So if you have any suggestions and or thoughts then now is the time to share them.
Awesome game! Love the story so much! The end made me cry though!

No worries. Live and learn, right? I tend to be pretty critical and nitpicky, but the game was still pretty good overall. Again, your art is fantastic. (And I'm glad to know you implemented a safety net mechanic -- items that can be permanently missed in games always make me incredibly nervous.)

As for more feedback, I think I've already said my part. I may write a fuller review at some point in the future, though.
