Generic RM2k3 RTP Gaming Fun!

I always wanted to make that game based on everything I enjoyed as a kid. This is the end result.

Hero's Realm creates a super-synergy of proactive features to create a gaming experience greater than the sum of its parts.

Lead four heroes and their teams against the evil forces of Mephistocles, the Lord of Demons in this retro-RPG adventure. Toggle between the four heroes as you explore dungeons, ascend towers, spelunk caves, save villages and defeat the forces of evil! Reminiscent of classic RPGs such as Dragon Quest III and Final Fantasy V, Hero's Realm is a fun romp in old-school RPG nostalgia.

-22 character classes (12 base classes, 4 hero classes, 3 secret classes, 3 master classes)
-TONS of game content and sidequests
-Classic NES-era and SNES-era RPG gameplay
-Great music
-Multi-party switching system (like Kefka's Tower in FFVI!)
-Multi-party tactical battles (at least 5 of them!)
-Massive world map
-Fun

The story is split into 5 chapters, with each of the first four chapters focusing on a new hero, and the 5th chapter bringing them all together.

Chapter 1: Won't Somebody Please Think of the Children?
Chapter 2: There is Something Fishy Going on...
Chapter 3: Land of the Rising Son
Chapter 4: True Calling
Chapter 5: The War on Terror

Okay, I wanted to start by saying that so far I have really enjoyed the game. It's solid especially compared to some other rpg maker games I've played, but even compared to many retail rpgs it's good. I ran into a huge bug though that has stopped me from playing the game completely, and I doubt I will continue playing it ever again because it's such a game breaker.

**POSSIBLE SPOILERS**

I finished the first chapter with no bugs or issues, even minor ones. I was to the point in the 2nd chapter where I had just beaten the desert area and gotten the item to make the cure for the sick people with (sorry, I'm not good with names of things). When I turned the item into the woman who makes the cure, it asked me if I wished to save. I said yes and I got some error saying that there wasn't enough memory available or something and the program closed. I had saved shortly before that so I didn't worry about it until I restarted the game and found that my entire save is now gone. I had saved a separate file once I finished chapter one, so I could start from there, but honestly I don't think it's worth playing through all that again and re-leveling all the chars just to possibly have it happen again.

I checked back 5 pages or so in the comments here and there was no mention of any memory error that I could find, so sorry if there is already a solution to this. I was looking forward to completing the game but now I don't think I am willing to. As a side note, my "Save02.lsd" is still in the file folder, but it is now 0 kb so I'm assuming the save is irretrievable. I downloaded the most recent version of the game shortly after it was fully completed, probably a week or a week and a half ago, and I had just gotten around to playing it. I don't know if it's just a bug in the recent version or what, but it's definitely something to look into. I don't see many people replaying the better part of the 2nd chapter with a bug like that.

Sorry for the rambling. I know I tend to over-inform with bugs and you probably already know what caused it. Either way, if you would let me know the status or if there's anything I can do to help figure out the problem just let me know. I would like to finish the game, but not if there's risk of this happening again.
There is no solution to this bug, nor was the cause ever found. Just on rare rare occassions, RM2k3 loses its mind, the music cuts out and then the next time you save, it crashes and destroys the save file you selected.

I have no idea why it happens. And it is not specific to chapter 2 or anything you did. Or, as far as I could troubleshoot, anything I coded. I spent months trying a multitude of things to resolve it and never did figure out what was causing it. I nearly quit making this game because of it. A bunch of other people tried to troubleshoot it too, to no avail. We couldn't even reliably recreate the bug, so its not like I could offer advice like "don't do X then Y or this bug will occur".

So, unfortunately, I don't know what to tell you. :(

(Save often and use many different saves, I guess.)
Dang, I hate to hear that. I never had any other game do it, but I suppose I haven't played all that many r2k3 ones, especially not recently. Well, I suppose I will try again sometime soon and just alternate save files on each save. I saved very often to avoid loosing anything in case of death (because I hate replaying things I just did :P) but that doesn't help in this case unless you alternate between two saves. I'm glad I at least I had a separate save at the end of chapter 1. Thanks for the prompt reply at least, and thanks for all the effort you have obviously put into the game.
I've actually had this problem recently with Shadows of Evil : Wings of Time. The whole music cuts out-save-crash. I didn't realize it would destroy your save file though :o Good thing I tried to do a new save instead (didn't want to save over my regular file in case music was disabled for the rest of the game).

Point is, it's not just Hero's Realm. Probably something to do with the way the RM2k3 software allocates memory.
Yeah, that is what I suspect. I believe there is a memory leak somewhere in the code that handles music or media playback. At least, that's my guess.

It happened in my other game Runelords, too.

Finally got around to beating the game. Granted I needed a little "boost" after the PoNR at the end; though I'm sure one day I'll pick up my old file from Hawksnest and do it for real.

One thing that should be looked into if enough bug reports come in to call for a v1.6 is that there is at least one part of the ice sliding puzzle in the Frozen Mountain that causes the player to slide into a wall and get stuck, requiring them to restart from their last save point. I will attempt to recreate the bug and post a screenshot. A lesser find was one inconsistency where the player would stop sliding while still on the ice, allowing them to continue in any other direction.

EDIT:

This is encountered by striking the ice blockage opposite it to the east. The problem seems to be that there is one less "right movement" than necessary as the character seems to bounce off of nothing when the sound is played and the character begins sliding back.

This is encountered by sliding from the snow tile to the east.
I am not sure what PoNR refers too, but thanks for the heads up about the ice sliding bugs!

There have been many many bug reports and balance issues, and I will (probably) eventually take the time to address them and release v1.6. But this game did take a lot out of me, and even after 2 years I haven't felt the strong inclination to revisit it again.

Thanks again to everyone who has taken the time to leave a comment or review!

The point of no return after the attack at the Void of the World.
Ah. That makes sense. I typed 'PoNR' into google and got a lot of links to porn sites. go figure.
The Shield of Sorrow really is a sorrowful shield. I can't seem to remove it from my female Harlequin. This is really sad, because she is now really slow. Is this a bug? Or is some kind of event needed to remove this item?

--Edit--
I got it off. Clever. I had to uncurse her. Very clever.

Also, any tips on quickly making 30,000 gold? I kind of splurged on new equiptment, and now am 28,000 short for buying a ship needed to head for Ikeia and the other place.
It is possible that there is an error in the code for the Priestess. The priestess is supposed to remove all cursed equipment, but the Sorrow Shield may have been missed for some of the playable characters!

Upload your save file and I will take a look.

Glad to hear!

Also, if you go to San Vegas and go to the top of Francis's keep, there is a Diamond Swimsuit in a chest (or maybe it was a chest of drawers). Sell it for a pretty penny.

If not, you'll have to grind for it. :( (Sorry, it was pretty dumb to have the ship cost 30,000 gold in retrospect)

Hey thanks for the reply. I didn't even notice it; yeah I got it all sorted out, and beat the game too. Now I have a couple more questions.

Is it possible to change your party up when starting a +New Game? I notice the party registrations dude is no longer in the barracks when starting a +New Game.

How do I choose Sage, Champion, or Joker in my starting parties. I want to replay the game, this time with an optimal party instead of trying out all the classes.

Is there an item that increases experience earned for a single character when equipped? It would be useful for leveling up under-leveled party members after they class change.
1) No, it is not possible to change classes in New Game +. (I just kind of tacked that option on at the end. It's just the same game, but you get to keep your party, levels and items)

2) Press Up on certain classes when you are selecting a class to reveal the elite classes. (I can't remember which...black knight, harlequin and... the warlock maybe?). keep in mind that the Joker class isn't very elite - more just wacky. On the plus side, the Joker can change into the Daredevil without an elfstone.

3) Not that I recall! Sorry. (That would have been handy)
Tis a shame you can't chance classes. But it doesn't matter, since I accidentally overwrote my save file with my new game OTL.

I figured out how to but those elite classes in my party, and I'm starting to regret putting a joker in for fun. WTF man. That's all I have to say.

That's a shame, but oh well. Party imbalance for the win.
So this game's considered the gold standard, enh? Looking forward to playing.
ha! I would hardly consider this the gold standard! (its more just a faithful throwback to the "oldschool" games of the 90s, and for those of us who grew up on them it triggers a huge wave of nostalgia endorphins).

There are some flaws, some bugs (save often and to many savefiles) and some weaknesses, but hopefully they are overshadowed by whatever elements you find fun.

I hope you enjoy it!
This game is one of the best I have ever played... (I have replayed it 5 times... Maybe 6... Not sure anymore...)
You're not making it easy for me to be number one most downloaded. :(

I just realized that I lost my old saves of this game... which makes me sad because I spent a TON of time playing it... but the silver lining is that I get to dominate it all over again! WEEE!!!
