Over two hundred years ago, the five heroes defeated the god of darkness; Ragnarok, in a climactic struggle for the fate of the world. Banished back to the realm of darkness known as the Abyss, the threat of the evil god had finally been put to rest once and for all...or so they thought.

Umbral Soul follows the story of Ragnarok’s loyal servant, Pandora, who joins her master in a quest to conquer the world and reclaim his lost power. In order to shroud the world in eternal darkness, they will have to find and recruit new allies, build an army of powerful monsters, and raise a force strong enough to crush anyone who dares to oppose them. Heroes, generals and rival overlords all stand against them. Do you have the power to make the world yours?

Pandora
A powerful dark sorceress with the ability to call forth monsters from the Abyss and enslave them to her will. Her burning hatred for the world and its people leads her to follow Ragnarok with unwavering loyalty.

Ragnarok
The god of darkness, who seeks dominion over the human realm. Once an extremely powerful being in the form of a monstrous demon, he has now been reduced to a mere soul. He wishes to plunge the entirety of the human realm into darkness, in part out of spite for his counterpart; the goddess of light, Lumielle.

Lanith
Beautiful, deadly, and self absorbed to a tee, Lanith is a succubus with a never ending hunger for the lifeforce of men. Having served under Pandora since she was only a child, she has a knack for getting under her skin, and does so whenever the opportunity arises.

Damien
A deeply twisted and sadistic young man, Damien loves nothing more than manipulating others and watching them squirm. While he has kept his true nature a secret, Ragnarok’s uprising marks the perfect opportunity for him to cut loose and have some fun...by killing as many enemies as possible.

Azrielle
The lord of all demons, who is fiercely loyal to Ragnarok and possesses an extreme, seething hatred for humanity. After failing to aid his master in conquering the world the first time, he has no intention of repeating the same mistakes again.

I'm back, baby!

Hey everybody, hope you've been doing well. I'm pleased to say I was just recently discharged from rehab, so at long last after over a month I'm home. They ran a whole lot of tests on me and I had several surgeries, so I am finally no longer in danger of croaking. That means I'm finally free to double down on game development, when I'm not stuck sitting in some doctor's office that is. Thank you all for your well wishes, they went a long way towards improving my mental health through that strenuous time. Welp, that's enough chatter. I've got some game making to do.

Posts

guillaume- Meh, I don't really think you need to be able to make an exact timeline when it comes to building a story. The sequence of the story's main events is pretty clear, and in the long run it really doesn't matter exactly when the smaller events occurred.

Possible spoilers

Wow, you must have been crazily overleveled when you fought the heroes. That battle is one of my favorites as well. It's easy if you know what to do, but if you don't, you'll find yourself having to defeat all the heroes multiple times. All the bosses will be more difficult in the next version, but not TOO difficult. I thought making the water temple one of the most fun areas in the game would be funny, since it's often the worst area in several other games.

Sadrack- A lot of the summons are downright broken if you use them for certain combo's, especially Demora. In fact, I actually had to nerf Demora for the ultimate edition. People have been thinking of combos I haven't even thought of! One person was able to get a mult-hit strike move to do 1k damage. Sadly I think people are missing out on these combos because leveling summons is a pain, but I have a solution for that.

I'm hyped to write the script for the sequel, since I have a lot of strong personalities in mind for the heroes. I was even planning on adding "Tales" style skits in addition to the scenarios. If there's anything I like, it's characters with...character.
i was level 33 that enouf i ws azzy pandy dimien and draco i just do mitple attack target and take control of seren and drop attackj with azzy peace of cake but i never beable to beat atenaa in anfel form xd
Huh, really? Serves me right for thinking she was just a healer then, and not leveling her despite liking her. Still, if I need a healer in the ultimate edition, she'll probably be my go to. I want to use her to see what kind of dialogue she has during the story, so.
you could put a senario part heros in the sequel who told all pesus story for exemple until now and do you make a secret final boss in sequel and could you make side quest for marcus and bersek please and you should make a craft systeme a monster book a ng plus and soundtrak and fan art for extra in umbra and in luminous

and what is the damien true goal because is have vengeace whe kill the his boss story forn not spoil and why dont like is ancestor and who kill pandora village she or ragnarok is there are surviver is rhe new heroes will be linked to acloythe answer me pls when you have time f cause i hope your new will game out is ther like to umbral saga and it strange to plain villains lvl one like hero why did they not star higt lv because they supose be so much pwers
In the prologue I was able to kill Jeremy after Lumielle came and put him on steroids. If you don't believe me, I cast the dark resistance debuff on all the melee characters that were in the starting 5 party and used the atk buff erase before my 2nd health bar and 2nd set of abilities kicked in. After those kicked in, I cast the silence + poison spell on them and then just spam the dark dmg spell that hits all of them. After the party of 5 fell, I cast the magic atk buff and then cast the single target dark dmg thing on Jeremy until he died while refreshing the magic atk buff whenever it faded. I do not know what to do from this point, as Lumielle seems to take no dmg. Was this intended in the game? Am I unable to progress from this point? Was there supposed to be something special in the main game if I were able to kill Jeremy and Lumielle in the prologue?
Dag-nabit people, how do you keep winning battles you're supposed to lose! *ahem* I mean...congratulations on defeating what was supposed to be an undefeatable boss. Lumielle can't be damaged though, and she doesn't attack, so if you actually do manage to beat Jeremy, she'll just hover there staring at you for eternity. I suppose you could call that an alternate ending. Ending 1:"Eternal Staring Match". But yeah, you're not supposed to win, so if you want to progress, just swallow your evil pride and take one on the chin.
please answer my queston by mailbox you surprise to someone really interess in yours story by allside
Sorry about that bud, I'm on it! And yeah, I don't think anyone is more excited about the story than you, heh heh.
I'm disappointed that I can't have a scenario like Ragnarok still being somewhat powerful during his 200 year rest after feasting on the remains of Jeremy and giving Pandora like all of her skills at lv 1.... (although that wouldn't make sense at all storywise, so I get why that's not in the game). Other than that though... I really enjoy this game and all the effort put into it. I like it when a game has a world that actually fills its world with interesting stuff and takes care not to make backtracking a huge pain (letting me go to the part of "dungeon" areas the story wants me to go to instead of having to walk all the way to the furthest room is very considerate of you). The skills of the characters also make me happy (Damien's "buff" along with the offensive buffs and skills of the other characters makes for a good show). The story is engaging through all the stuff about the characters that I can constantly find without having to go through long amounts of grind and walking around. I still have to explore to find everything, but when I do explore, it's not a chore and I find the extra bits in a short amount of time. I've liked the characters so far and I think they're believable (although I don't know how to cohesively support my reasons for that). The only problem I have is the level caps on the summons and how I have to level each one individually, because I don't want to level the ones with a low lv cap, don't want to grind to keep more than one summon at a decent level, and cannot take a lower level summon into combat and reasonably expect it to survive (a certain someone can't have too much armor on due to their "job", so that means I can't have that certain someone underleveled or else they will get cut to shreds before they can use their "charming" skillset). Overall though, the rate at which I get new skills/characters has satisfied me enough to overlook the fact the issues with summons and just(You had something that helped with this in the game all along... ♥♥♥) I enjoy the game for the engaging and entertaining experience it gives me. Thank you so much for creating this game and offering it for free.
Also, how did Ran teleport out of Elrios and get an identity change in the Abyss?
So I just finished the game...now I feel empty. Definitely one of the best RPG Maker games I've played in my life. Thank you for your efforts!
Not sure if this was mentioned already but the Insight skill seems kinda obsolete since you can just press shift when selecting an enemy and it shows the same tab. Also I'm missing one scenario! It's on the third page below
"Gryger's Apprentice"
and above "A Succubus Story Part 1" how can I unlock it?

Oh yeah and the
Kraken
can move twice during a turn, I'm assuming that's intended?
And yeah as many people before me already said, the battles are quite easy. The only challenging ones were the ones you were supposed to lose :P
i notice only alexa is the only hero who dead why did you make her diad and i taug athena will become dark mage because her vengeance again pandy ps i taught jirémy is to steretipe characthe and he want kill dark mage like prseus or he like joel

Skylide- Yeah, backtracking tanks. A lot of rpg elements like having poison persist after battle are traditions that have been carried throughout countless games, yet I've always found them annoying rather than fun. My rule is, it I don't think it's fun, it's not making it into my game, tradition or not. I'm making leveling up and acquiring gold easier in the next version, since it can be a little tedious in the current one. But hey, I'm thrilled you're having fun!

reggird- Congrats on beating the game! Bust out the confetti! Break open the champagne! Microwave the celebratory pizza bagels! "One of the best rpg maker games you've played in your life," huh? People keep saying that, but I can't believe them. My brain can't process that level of joy, so it just defaults to disbelief instead.

I had that bug with the shift button brought to my attention a little while ago. I think what I'll do is scrap insight and have Ragnarok reveal info on each enemy from the beginning of the game. It'll be like carrying an evil, fiery, one-eyed player's guide with you wherever you go.

About that last scenario...

After completing the succubus sidequest, talk to the black haired woman outside the inn in Arcfall to unlock it.

And about the...

Kraken. Yes, attacking twice a turn is the Kraken's gimmick.

Seems like people grinded up to unanticipated levels, which made most enemies a breeze. In the next version, Pandora won't have her healing spell, and the bosses will be tougher, so it won't be quite as breezy. In general, I want players to rely more on their summons in the future.

Soo...sorry about that gaping hole in your soul, but there's more content on the way, so you can look forward to playing that. Thank you both for making what was already an awesome night even better!

guillaume- Whoa dude, spoilers! If you're going to talk about major story elements, you need to hide them in a tab. To hide part of a comment, highlight whichever part you'd like to hide and hit the third form the last icon. It's the eye with the red line going through it. If you could hide that first comment of yours, I'd appreciate it.

Of course we can avoid that problem entirely if you just send all your questions through e-mail like you did before. I'd rather not discuss plot points on the game page anyway, but sending me an email is always fine.

EDIT: Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that I'm surprised someone finally recognized Ran!

Glad I"m playing this version then, cause I've had more than enough unreasonably difficult rpg maker games lately, this game is providing a great release of all my bottled frustration from the other games with random encounters which constantly one-hit kill my characters even after an hour grinding. Really, If I would want to play I Wanna Be The Guy then I would play that >.> Seriously, I made a thread on a forum and in half of the games there's been annoying tedious grind followed up by sudden death mimics pretending to be chests, and me having to redo chunks of gameplay, not fun! I wouldn't call your battles easy, to me they've been just the right level of difficulty to have fun while playing. I think the epic boss battle with Reinhart was the most difficult so far.

Granted, if I want to keep the comparison to chrono trigger going, then chrono boss battles did certainly kill me, I think I died a couple of times in most of chrono trigger's boss battles. So maybe if you added a bit more difficulty it would still be ok, hard to say. Buuut, it's really hard for me to imagine these battles without pandora's group heal, they weren't exactly easy (except a few of them). Also, I have been enjoying a bit of grinding in your game, because the grinding here feels very rewarding and not very tedious.

The only weird segment so far was the fire temple, I haven't died a single time up to that point, and then I died like 10 times in a random fire puzzle. Not exactly difficult, but a bit out of the blue.

Difficulty is a tricky thing, sometimes frustrating difficulty can be engaging and in a sense fun, but it's tricky to do, and it's easy to go a step too far. For example I think I played through the whole VVVVV, which was super frustrating at times, but kept me engaged enough (but also it's a short game, can be finished in a few hours, and if you have a game where difficulty continues for a long while it starts to grind on you until your frustration is too much and you ragequit, and your game is really long.)

Another game which I found frustratingly difficult but in a fun way was Fortune Summoners, the enemies there, very frustratingly vicious to battle, but struggling against them kept me engaged.

Both of these games were action platforms.

Btw, here's more videos. Includes pandora's and lanith's cuddly backstory which was a lovely breath of fresh air in between all the unfolding tragedy, solving of the legendary monster egg quest and bird issues, and entering the haunted crypt.

Oh don't worry, I'm not going to mess with the stats that much, I just want bosses to pose more of a threat and have a little more staying power. I'm not touching that one battle with you-know-who though. That guy is as tough as nails, probably one of the hardest bosses in the game.

Chrono Cross was brutally hard for me, since I usually overlevel myself in order to win. In that game, you couldn't really grind up levels, which is what eventually caused me to quit. You win this time, evil talking cat man. On the plus side, the battle system and attack animations were downright cool.

Heh heh, you gotta be patient with that room and use shift to run at the end, or you'll end up french fried, as I'm sure you learned. And to think I believed I was being generous with how long it took for those fire pits to flare up.

Difficulty is indeed a hard thing to gauge, as different players have different skill levels and ways of playing, but I'll tell you right now that you are currently hilariously overleveled. I'm surprised you were able to gather up so many summons before even heading to Lindale. I hate overpowered enemies myself, especially one's that can kill you in a single hit. The healing in Umbral Soul is extremely limited, so I took care not to make any one enemy capable of one-shotting your party unless you're extremely underleveled.

Still, I'm glad you're able to take a breather from bring eaten in one gulp by random treasure chests, and even gladder (that's a word, right?) that you continue to be entertained.

So yeah don't worry, I don't plan on giving this game the Dark Souls treatment, but I do plan on providing players who want a bit more challenge with an opportunity to test their skills.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that I always have a good laugh when you criticize Ranarok and Pandora for their stupidity.
i really hope luminous will be much hard i coun the summon the about 10 plus acolyth plus heros enmy plus talon that lots boss for luminoyus soul and why you dont make more fighy you cant win there more epic that sow the difference lv of power between hero and vilan i sugest you do tha for sow demi-god powers in luminous

i dont know how win the fight in damien perso quest rehart at dark tower 2 form

and why ragna show pandy the ebony cauldron to explain his plan

Never played chrono cross so I cannot speak about that one. But after playing chrono trigger a few times, my current tactics of playing that game is reach the mountain where I find the item to cut my MP usage by 75%, put it on chrono, and then grind the monsters there for a hour or two until chrono can cast luminaire... and then I can one shot kill most things for the rest of the game without taking damage because chrono also gets pumped up with speed so he starts every battle first and spams luminaire to one-shot-kill every group of enemies...

I'm not surprised I am overleveled in Umbral Soul, I'm a completionist, I want to be through when I play and I want to find and do everything I can and to explore as much of a game as I can (if I like the game anyway), so it's not so much me wanting to overlevel due to the enemy encounters (with my current levels, they have mostly been a breeze to me, and I do feel I am overleveled), but more due to the fact that I want to solve every single sidequest as it comes along. I feel I will be grinding a lot for the slime-evolution-instructor-battle quest, been working on that one currently (although I don't know how far I would have to over-level that slime to defeat a dragon, even after I got it evolved to it's final form it seems like it will need a dozen more levels to defeat that dragon... may give up on it for now and revisit that quest later). But I want to finish that sidequest now that I can evolve, so it feels like I have to grind my slime to do that, but I cannot level up the slime without leveling up the rest of the party. If anything, I feel this is the issue. Even the experience item gives exp to the whole party rather than one character. So, to level the slime up to level 15 I had to over-level pandora and damien and they are already at level 25. Personally I would prefer to have a more balanced party if possible. Maybe an item which gives experience but only to a single party member rather than all of them? (There's the other items which increases you by a whole level, but I can't buy that one)

I definitely feel like I keep overleveling pandora because I want to level up the other characters or pandora's summons. I also notice that experience in your game is very linear. Fighting the wasp encounters from the initial forest, if you include the massive 350 gold you get for ambrosia, and the character who sells you the 600 exp for every party member items for 500 gold, fighting these encounters ends up giving you... potentially more experience than any other enemies in any other dungen further on, even 25 hours into the game, with the exception of the enemies which drop demonite or whatever it was called (worth 425 gold), maybe that needs to be balanced more? I thought that item was a one-person exp thing, and I still felt fighting the bees was giving as much exp as the encounters 20 hours later into the game, but now that I learned that it's actually a whole party exp thing, It feels like I should go back to grind the bees even more...

If I do a little math here, a group of bees has the potential to drop me 700 gold plus I think 120 exp.
If I do some simple math here, fighting a single group of bees has the potential of granting me 700g/500g(cost of potion)*600ex(from the potion)=840xp + 120(?) of direct exp, that's a potential 960 exp for each of my 4 characters from a single wasp encounter! And, because this is a whole party exp thing it forces me to overlevel pandora as long as I want to solve the sidequests which require my summons to be leveled up (plus I'm curious what their skills will be or what they will evolve into etc. so I'm inclined to level them up, but pandora is forced to also level up.) Defeating the ghosts actually gives you less potential exp, but it's a more consistent exp because the 700 2x ambrosia drop from wasp/bee doesn't happen every time. I think the crystal demon things were something like 600xp + the 425 gold demonite drop (sometimes 2x) but I'm not allowed to revisit that location. What I would really enjoy seeing is some system to use all these drops to craft something rather than just sell them. I already have like 30 ambrosias, 20 demonite and my net worth from just these two items is like 20 000 gold. And I have a bunch of other items too. The gold from the other items feels very low compared to these two items. For example ectoplasm (already have 40 of those...) is only 87 gold despite being a fairly late drop, and the enchanged stone/earth from golems is worth even less.

I'll also grant you that given difficulty in games, I prefer to play them either on easy or normal, I very rarely see games which I would like to play on "hard". In that sense I feel I'm more of a casual player rather than a hardcore one. You could always attempt to have a difficulty setting of some sort, although that may be a lot of work to implement, especially in rpg maker. I browsed and there are a couple of difficulty setting and enemy levels related scripts out there for rpg maker ace, you could always test if one of those doesn't work.

Evil truly is stupid sometimes, and I've enjoyed berating it for it XD, but to be fair the good is often even dumber. I'm curious to find out more backstory on why Ragnarok hates Lumielle so much.
Sounds like your playstyle is similar to mine. I love finding loopholes in games that allow me to become crazy powerful. In Final Fantasy IX, I found an island filled with powerful green dragons that I farmed for massive amounts of experience until I was ridiculously powerful. I was so OP it wasn't even funny.

So about the exp items, I think I know what's going on here. See, demon's draughts and drafts actually only give exp to summons. These items highlights the entire party when you them, but that's only because I wasn't able to find a compatible script that allows only certain characters so use certain items (trust me, I've looked). Although the entire party is selected, only the summon gets the exp. You needn't fear overleveling Pandora when using those items. Of course, if you level them through grinding, yeah, she'll be super OP.

This being the case, it's faster to gain exp through grinding if you're aiming to level the entire party. If you want to level a summon quickly without grinding, demon's draughts/drafts are the way to go. I've rebalanced the rewards for the next version, as I had forgotten to give a lot of enemies sellable drops. I've also lowered the cost of draughts and increased their effectiveness, which should allow players to more easily raise multiple summons to their maximum levels, and obtain their ultimate forms. Or you could just train one unbeatable summon and murder everything with it.

In several cases, I forgot that items have their value cut in half when you sell them. The ectoplam drops for example, were supposed to be worth 175 gold each, so I should have valued them at 350 gold. I actually just noticed that now, so thanks for the heads up!

I don't play on hard either, it always seemed kind of pointless to me. I mean sure, it's great when you're running through a New Game+ and you don't want to one shot everything, but otherwise it just seems like it makes games more frustrating. Even though I'm changing things about this game, I'd rather not spend too much time improving it, since I'd like to continue working on the sequel as soon as possible. Adding difficulties would be a time consuming task, so I think I'd rather just tweak the bosses a bit and call it a day.
I loved this game, but there are things I love and hate.

I loved the story and character themes, most people having character traits fitting for their skill type, Damien (Puppeteer) being a sadistic person, Marcus (Stormcaller) and his thirst for knowledge but also going chaotic sating it. Pandora (Summoner) having perfect diplomatic skills and such.

I hate Gryger and Azrielle though. Gryger is entirely based on HP consumption mechanic, but I would like that mechanic to split to other members such as:
-Pandora's abilities would cost more mana, maybe an AoE Fount of Darkness or Infernal Awakening, and summons could consume her own life force to summon but restore some mana as well, that would both work as a penalty and a gateway to use your skills effectively.
-Damien consuming his life force to heal, which also was her mother's speciality.
-Marcus's charge ability consuming HP but powering his next turn even more.

Summons are good but there are only 3 reasonable choices:
-Draconus: For the full savage mode and going ham.
-Lanith: Attack and Heals together, Sadistic Lash is a cutie.
-Demora: Oh god the heals they heal so much they hurt. Oh yeah and Nebulos Field is very OP and I like it.
Apart from those three, all the summons are particularly useless.

Pandora is not feeling like a support character, Summons are too weak I think you should empower the summons' offensive capabilities and give Pandora more buffing options like AoE Fount of Darkness or AoE Infernal Awakening. Pandora is not supporting summons, Summons are supporting Pandora because she packs a heavier punch than any summon.

Also I read about the healing thing. Healing is not really limited, Lanith and Pandora can hold the team just fine but you can always press that big red button Demora when things get rough.

What I would suggest is a summon only Dharc Draught sold at Dark Imp.
