Over two hundred years ago, the five heroes defeated the god of darkness; Ragnarok, in a climactic struggle for the fate of the world. Banished back to the realm of darkness known as the Abyss, the threat of the evil god had finally been put to rest once and for all...or so they thought.

Umbral Soul follows the story of Ragnarok’s loyal servant, Pandora, who joins her master in a quest to conquer the world and reclaim his lost power. In order to shroud the world in eternal darkness, they will have to find and recruit new allies, build an army of powerful monsters, and raise a force strong enough to crush anyone who dares to oppose them. Heroes, generals and rival overlords all stand against them. Do you have the power to make the world yours?

Pandora
A powerful dark sorceress with the ability to call forth monsters from the Abyss and enslave them to her will. Her burning hatred for the world and its people leads her to follow Ragnarok with unwavering loyalty.

Ragnarok
The god of darkness, who seeks dominion over the human realm. Once an extremely powerful being in the form of a monstrous demon, he has now been reduced to a mere soul. He wishes to plunge the entirety of the human realm into darkness, in part out of spite for his counterpart; the goddess of light, Lumielle.

Lanith
Beautiful, deadly, and self absorbed to a tee, Lanith is a succubus with a never ending hunger for the lifeforce of men. Having served under Pandora since she was only a child, she has a knack for getting under her skin, and does so whenever the opportunity arises.

Damien
A deeply twisted and sadistic young man, Damien loves nothing more than manipulating others and watching them squirm. While he has kept his true nature a secret, Ragnarok’s uprising marks the perfect opportunity for him to cut loose and have some fun...by killing as many enemies as possible.

Azrielle
The lord of all demons, who is fiercely loyal to Ragnarok and possesses an extreme, seething hatred for humanity. After failing to aid his master in conquering the world the first time, he has no intention of repeating the same mistakes again.

I'm back, baby!

Hey everybody, hope you've been doing well. I'm pleased to say I was just recently discharged from rehab, so at long last after over a month I'm home. They ran a whole lot of tests on me and I had several surgeries, so I am finally no longer in danger of croaking. That means I'm finally free to double down on game development, when I'm not stuck sitting in some doctor's office that is. Thank you all for your well wishes, they went a long way towards improving my mental health through that strenuous time. Welp, that's enough chatter. I've got some game making to do.

Posts

Uh...wow. Thanks BlackStar, that's kind of amazing. And by "kind of amazing" I mean extremely, ridiculously, awesomely amazing. Thanks for the support, I hope you enjoy my future games just as much!
five thousand downloads !!!!!! ^____^ congrats, you deserve each and every single one of them, and at least five thousand more :3
Wow...so many people playing this game. Nervousness rising. Tension building. Where's the panic room? Nothing can hurt me inside the panic room!
I have already posted here, anyway in case you're interested here's what I didnt't like about this GREAT game:

1) I was very unsure about how the dungeon random encounters work (i.e. after you walk x steps you get to a fight). Sometimes it felt very annoying and unavoidable, until I discovered that I could flee. I mean I knew I could flee, but I thought there was going to be some sort of punishment for doing so... anyway, maybe dungeon where you clearly see enemies spawn and chase you and THEN initiate the fight are better to me.
2) it is kind of sad that there are not a lot of lootables/hidden stuff. The map feels kind of empty and shallow because of it.
3) I wish you could just continue to play the game after you defeat the final boss. Yeah I know, technically
you destroy everything and shit
, but anyway.
I most certainly am interested good sir! Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Allow me to address your points. *adjusts glasses*

1)

Random Encounters and You
Rpg maker handles random encounters in a really weird way. When you set the encounter rate, it doesn't count that many steps before triggering another encounter like you think it would. Fortunately, I found a script that makes it do exactly that. Thanks to that script, it's impossible to get into a battle, take 2 steps, and be forced into another.

There's no penalty for running away. Zero, nadda, nothing. One thing I'm not all too fond of when it comes to battles in rpg's is failing to flee. You try to run away, fall on your butt, then have your face beat in by giant bats or sentient piles of blue sludge. It's kind of annoying. So, I managed to find a script that allows you to tweak the success rate of fleeing. I used this to make almost every encounter in the game have a 100% escape rate, except for those in Timbershade Woods and the final dungeon. The only real penalty for fleeing is being underleveled.

As for visible encounters, there are a boatload of enemy types in the game, so finding a sprite for each one would be difficult to say the least. I mean sure, I could use a single sprite to represent all the enemies, but that would damage the atmosphere in places like Palnea Woods. Placing enemies everywhere tends to clutter up a map in my opinion, and I'm not fond of playing tag with enemies. It makes things slightly more stressful and draws my focus away from the environment. I find it much simpler to just be forced into a battle and hit the escape button.

2)

(Insert Zelda Treasure Jingle Here)
Ah yes, the items. The importance of items in this game was definitely toned down to emphasize the feeling of being a villain. Have you ever seen Sephiroth use a potion? An ether? A Phoenix Down? Oh sweet mercy, Sephiroth armed with Phoenix Downs, there's a terrifying thought. Sorry, getting off topic. Though items are useless for the most part excluding a few exceptions, I too enjoy the magical feeling of opening a treasure chest and hearing that rewarding little chime. There are chests in just about every dungeon except the final one and the dark castle, though perhaps not as many as in other rpg's. I can think of one dungeon in particular that could use some more bling though, so I think I'll revisit that one.

3) This one's very spoilery, so those who haven't beaten the game, view with caution.

At the End of an Evil Conquest
Ah, postgame stuff. Yeah, you aren't the only one I've heard this from. Sadly once you beat the game there isn't much to do except command your minions to conquer stuff. The acolytes all separate at that point to do their own thing, so there wouldn't be much potential for additional gameplay there. At least nothing I can think of, suggestions are welcome. Uh...spoiler tagged suggestions of course.

Welp, I hope I covered everything. Feel free to let me know if I didn't and thanks again.
Honestly, your game is a blast!
The only thing I'ld have wished to see would be a small cutscene at the end when you're storming the final place with your army (trying to avoid spoilers without knowing how to put up tags) and you see all the creatures you've gathered as summonings. To see some small scene, maybe even some of your people commenting on how big (or frustratingly small) your collected force is would really give me a rewarding feeling for running around and trying to gather all of them. And goddamnit I wished I could've gotten the Foxdemon in the demon world. That thing simply looked awesome.

But these are just wishes and most likely a massive pain to implement. You did a great job, the community showed you by featuring your game and giving you the misao awards.
Speaking of post game stuff (I'm sorry, it's my favorite XD)

You said all the acolytes seperate, do you think maybe it could be like a side/optional/fanfiction thing where Pandora were to travel and revisit her allies, and each one rejoins her. Sorta ala last half of FF6? (like with terra if you played it)
Most post games just contain stuff that's devoid of the main story as if the post game didnt happen. So that's a path you can take if you dont mind it.
You could have a bounty board in a town or two of things that popped up, or sail to an off-island, have something added to the arena area...

Just my random quick thoughts on the matter if anything helps. :3
ghabaz: Hiding a comment behind a spoiler is easy as 3.14159, also known as Pi. Heh heh heh, math jokes. I'm sorry, I'll stop. Anyway, all you need to do is highlight what you want to hide with your mouse, then hit the third from the last button on the toolbar. It looks like an eyeball with a red slash going through it. Presto! Instant spoiler tag. I'll demonstrate by hiding this next spoilery comment behind said tag.

That's a great idea you have there, but like you said there are a few hiccups when it comes to implementation. First, the sprite sheets I'm using for those monsters don't all have "back" images, so I can't really show them from behind. What's more Pandora doesn't really have the ability to keep more than one summon with her at a time with a few exceptions. If she had all her summons out at once when the acolytes invaded the capital, they would have slaughtered everything. The final boss probably wouldn't have made it past turn 1!

Believe me, I was sorely tempted to make the fox boss recruitable, but then I thought to myself that its presence would be redundant considering the large number of recruitable monsters. With its moveset, it would probably end up being an inferior version of the krakken.

Thank you very much, this community continues to impress me with its incalculable levels of awesomeness.

Knightowl: Spoiler because spoilers.

Weeeell, the thing is, after Pandora and the gang get their power boost, their abilities go through the roof in terms of power. If they were to get together to fight anything, they would absolutely murder everything in their path. Each one of them becomes boss class on their own, so all of them fighting together would be like Sephiroth, Golbez, Ject, The Emperor, Kefka and Kuja all joining the same party. Needless to say anything that went up against that wouldn't last more then 12.7 seconds before bursting into flames. I'd also like to keep their evolved powers a secret until the sequel so people can see just how much more powerful the characters they used to control have become. It is tempting though.

Give in to the temptation.... give in! NOW! NOWNOWNOWNOWNOWNOWNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW! Ehem excuse me I got a bit excited there...

Maybe you could make them playable in the sequel`? Just like you are planning to make the hero's journey in this game you could make the villain point of views in the next game couldn't you? I mean.... I wanna play as a boss it was my major beef with the game that I didn't feel all powerfull as the villain (it's still a great game!) so a few of the bosses after their power boost (making their HP limit higher than 9999 could help too...)would be awesome!
Spoilers because...oh why am I even bothering? You know the drill by now!

What you're asking for is commonly referred to as "God Mode". One thing I wanted to avoid with the sequel was having to play through the same maps over again, just with a different party. After the acolytes conquest, several locations undergo some pretty drastic changes, and adding a postgame would spoil those changes by showing them too soon. I want to player to see the real aftermath of the acolytes conquest only after they come up against them as enemies.

Having the acolytes be playable in the sequel wouldn't really work either, considering they aren't that active in terms of running around blowing things up. They take more of an administrative role giving out orders and overseeing the progress of their plans. Not a particularly fun thing to do for the player.
dasgibtesnet i dont think it possible because in the sequel the acolyths will stay in their land and do villains things ( ask minion do things and wait for heroes) beside their too powerfull and that will not be multi ends last thing they will be separate that my opinion i wonder what whell man opinion

Honestly? I can live with that if I get to play as a boss for that. Sadly most others can*t but you very nicely destroyed my hope, my faith in god and miracles(wo am I kidding.... i don't believe in god) destroyed, with a single statement!

(Honestly I don't want god mode.... I want to play as the boss of the game.... with the enemies relying on "potions" healing, clever tactics,on surviving the onslaught of a vast army just to survive barely cause you can't heal and the like... I have often thought about making a game like that but I suck at mapping and am lazzy and- er we are getting in the territory where I would talk about stupid stuff so let's leave it at that)

Anyways.... I am eagerly awaiting the light campaign of this great story.... ;)
I'm not sure how you're adding the light campaign, But as rewards for completing the game you could add a couple side quest length campaigns for the other characters in your party? This is probably an impossible suffestion, but just thought I'd share it anyways.
Oh I'm pretty sure it's possible. Actually, scratch that, I'm 100% sure it's possible. It would actually be fairly simple. Labor intensive, but simple. Entering the light campaign will be super easy. When you start a new game, you'll be given to the option to start either the main story or the hero story. Once you pick one, you'll be off to the races. Thanks for the suggestion!

And dasgibtesnet, I'm sorry for destroying your hopes and dreams, I'm apparently really good at that. I wonder if I could turn that into a career. I should become a politician!
You could also work for Nether Realms, Ed Boon tries to crush dreams even if what he's saying is wrong (Hellboy) and he seems to be the face of the company.

some random guy has grinded untill level 99 and got all ultimate equipment so he oneshots all off them using a precharged super attack
Hello, I encountered a error in the battle with the first recruitable party member (dark mage who controls summons)

What do I do? Didn't get the recruitable summon Hornet boss, should I do that?
Oh yeah, that keeps being a pain in my rear. Just attack the dark mage himself instead and you'll be fine. Fortunately I found out what the issue with that was, so in the next version that bug will be dead as a doornail.
Found a bug. Where can I report it? I have an affected savegame as well.

(Awesome game btw! Downloaded it a few days ago, and it's one of the best games I've had the pleasure of playing.)

Sorry about the bugs, I've been squashing them as I hear of them, but I'm glad you're enjoying the game regardless. You can feel free to send me a message about them by clicking my name and then hitting "Send user a message". I'll assist you as best I can and make sure those bugs rue the day they ever set foot in your presence!
