Finally tried Octopath. The writing wasn't as terrible as I expected, and the battle-system was actually one of the most engaging I've played in a long time (thankfully, it's at the forefront). Verdict is still out on the visuals. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I started the game with Therion. He reminded me of Zidane just a little bit, an arrogant, sassy thief who frequently walks the line between charming and obnoxious.
I'm only a couple hours in, so I'll reserve my overall judgement on the writing. It's not great by Square-Enix standards (...if that company can be held up as a badge of quality anymore), but it's good enough to keep you engaged.
Music is nice so far. And as I said, the battles are excellent (that's coming from someone who usually hates JRPG battles).
My only issue with the visuals is pretty much what everyone else has said. It's often difficult to see what's going on in the maps.
Eventually, you can learn to ignore the excessive bloom and Instagram-esque post effects; and focus on the sprites, which are nicely-drawn and nostalgic. I would have preferred the game use more traditional pixel art, or even hand-drawn backgrounds, but I can see what they were going for.

New Tileset Showcase
author=kentonaauthor=FFiresoulWell, the thinking goes as such: the game is already made in RM2k3 (it just needs some polishing and tweaks). I am not terribly skilled with RMVXAce, and a complete novice in MV. But I suppose I could learn and redo it. Plus, Avee is working hard at making RM2k3 graphics! I think he'd kill me if I switched engines. :)
it looks BEAUTIFUL! I'm surprised you're going through all this work of a remake and still keeping the rm 2k3 engine - i feel you could do so much more with MV, or even VX/Ace. but still very excited about this.
All things considered, I think sticking with 2k3 is totally justified. Hero's Realm is already a finished, fully-functional game, and 2k/2k3 obviously suits its graphical style perfectly. A game like HR might not benefit much from switching to MV, unless there were serious reworks or new systems being added to the game.
(But with that said, I might be a bit biased XD)
The new tile-set looks fantastic. I agree about the sand being slightly monotonous, though. Consider adding 1-2 variations of the 16x16 texture you could mix in with the auto-tile.

I'm not on here very often anymore, and I struggle to balance work and working on my own game, but If you need a beta tester again, holler man. Always down to try and break it. xD
Much love, mate.
Thanks buddy. You were a great tester in the past and I'll definitely be taking you up on that! :D

This looks gorgeous! Your use of light overlays are masterful.
Are all of these tilesets custom now?
They are! Not sure if you saw the latest blog post, but we’ve decided to convert the game into a commercial project. So we’ll need lots of pixel art. XD

I love these tiles, but I think the sun overlay is a bit too powerful. It's vying for dominance with the great map underneath.
Hm, I meant for it to be subtle, but you may be right! I’ll try toning it down.
Or I may just remove it. It probably won’t add anything visually, once the NPCs, animals, animations and such are added in.

I'm glad that you've decided to develop your game properly, but you really need to handle your second kickstarter campaign better. This time it's all or nothing, so you can't allow yourself to keep silent for months again. I wish you success.
Thank you! Were you one of the original backers, by chance? If so, look forward to a free Steam access code. :D
Just to clarify, the original KS was only for "fun." It was in 2014, before Rm2k3 was legalized, so there was no possibility of making it a serious commercial game at that time. And I never stated as much. Most of that money went into promotional art (that I have posted here over the years), music, pixel animations, and so on.
Now that the assets we need has increased dramatically, it's a different story. Those old funds ran out a long time ago, so I am digging into my own pocket to get this remaster off the ground. I'm happy to do that, of course! But as you know, it would cost at least 10-20k to fund even a small-scale RPG. So I hope people understand why I'm launching a proper campaign now. ^-^
