So...are you serious?
Both routes can exist buddy, and it will become even more diverse with next generations.
Most ppl from our generation feel the same way as we do, so there is a market. Now, the big companies focus mainly on the newer generation gamers which is another market.
Think of it like comics and cartoons, animation didn´t kill comics and comics didn´t need to kill cartoons to stay alive, they work in parallel.

Aveyond was not luck silly :) It wasn´t all game quality either, as Amanda herself admits, it was well placed and well directed marketing geared to the rightand EXISTENT public.
You are tied to what the big companies think, but the real money holders are the players (and parents for that matter) and those are far less demanding as you seem to think: The same way they buy big companies shitty concepts coated in awesome graphics, they can be hooked to games with not so awesome graphics but other appeals including low price =) I think you need to move on with times buddy.
Lastly: Tell us, you really had a dream of making a commercial RM game and being next Squaresoft but got frustrated and now you prefer to discourage others, right? You can be honest, we won´t be mean to you :3

Same as Feld above, and we are not alone, believe me.
Also the creator of Aveyond earned enough to live off from the game´s profit AND fund a far better sequel.

And Kuroi: As I think I made clear before, I have no interest in working as designer nor spriter for square or those other big companies, seriously, do you think that is all the market has to offer? Maybe in pretty (and useless) boxes on stores, but there are tons of small commercial dev companies making at least decent money with pixel based games.
No one says RM is standard pro tool either, neither that it can or was designed to compete with engines used by big companies and to make games sold at the same prices as Final Fantasy, but it can make games worth selling for a small price which can maintain a small company of ppl doing what they like to do. Might not give billions, but enough to keep working with that.

We're still open to accepting late entries (despite what the main post may say), so feel free to submit that, Tau. We will, however, deduct considerable points from one of the five main assessment categories ('Compliance with Rules').
That may put you at an automatic disadvantage, but it's at your discretion, either way. :]
Does that deduction applies to this last minute update too? If it does, disregard it and count my previous update posted sunday, if not, consider this then:

Oh damn, I was in such a hurry to post it that I forgot to re-add the markings >.<...
Thanks anyway =^.^=

:The Game Making Drive/Blog Topic
I never thought that the point of this topic was to comment on other ppl progress, just to motivate ppl to actually progress by compromising on posting it in a regular basis. If that makes any sense :P
Game Production Companies
Yep, and what I need more is the native english speaker part (since despite how much I use english, mine is far from perfect).
RM3D?
I´d hope more for 3D action/fighting game making engine, RPGs can be just text, 2D, 3D or whatever, they are about concept mainly and NUMBERS as Crazy loves to say.
But action oriented games sure would benefit from a 3D engine.
The point lies in who would program that until completion, which formats would it be compatible with and if they would leave it open for commercial games.
Also let´s not forget that there are actual fans (and a lot of then) who like to PLAY play 2D games :)

What you say works only for big companies, again. And even Capcom resorted to go back on old NES graphical set for Megaman 9, and as someone from Microsoft said in a speach about game design I went to some months ago: "many gamers nowadays are the ones who grew on old games in the 80s, those guys now are grown up, have money, but most of then just play abandonware because companies nowadays shifted their marked tottally towards the newer gamers, that is something we plan to correct with diversion".
There will always be market for 2D games and even crappy low res sprites have their place, again for costs or different applications. They might probably leave consoles completely (or not) but won´t die.
And many companies hire pixelartists yet (check the job boards and Pixelation foruns), most of then small, but they pay nicelly for sprites.
As for RM commercial release, I suppose you never heard of Aveyound.
