Your First Game

My first game.. I'm working on it now, actually. Instead of trying to create some kind of epic adventure, I am adapting something I am a fan of into a RPG. I feel it allows me to work on everything without worrying about the story or how long I am aiming to make it. The story will end where the storyline in the material I am adapting from ends. I am however stupid and working on creating my own custom graphics for it which is a slow process. I am hoping I do not lose interest and am excited for the day that I am able to unveil what I am working on.

Oi. Being a beginner, especially a stupid one, sucks. D:

Oldschool RPGs aka the blinding lights of nostalgia

Is this topic about video games in general or RPGmaker games? I think it is a little silly to compare what people are doing with RPGmaker as a whole to the entire market these daysand qualify as old school gaming when alot of RPGmaker games likely aren't decidedly old school in nature. We're not professionals and don't have access to the same resources developers in the industry do. I don't think every game made with the RTP is a concious decision to make an old school style game. If so, how would we compare them to games like Dragon Fantasy which intentionally try to make you feel like you're playing something from the NES?

However, reading this topic, most notably WolfCoder's reply, gave me another thought. As a player of RPGs, which gameplay mechanic do you find more frustrating: having to grind ala old school RPGs, or long winded cutscenes such as many RPGs these days have?

Romancing SaGa (and the SaGa series!)

Every game is more enjoyable when you don't worry about things you'd never know unless you read a FAQ, walkthrough, etc. At least the first time through.

Though I think Romancing Saga is best when you actually have an idea of how the ER works, even if you're not conciously checking what your ER is around. I tried to grind in my first playthrough as I habitually do in RPGs and it was only by learning of ER that I learned how terrible of a decision that was.

favorite anime movie?

Does it explain why Tetsuo suddenly turned into a blob? That always bothered me.

favorite anime movie?

Perfect Blue.

Worst game you personally do like.

Because of the difficulty, the translation, level design...

Alot of people seem to love X4 which I personally don't like. I can't enjoy it because it's just too easy.

Worst game you personally do like.

-Breath of Fire V ( if counts then yeah, but I don't think it should personally. )
-7th Saga
-Mischeif Makers
-TMNT: Tournament Fighters (I'm a sucker for anything TMNT)
-FF VIII and XII, since the original poster listed them in this topic. I don't think either is bad though..
-EVO (don't know how this is bad either..)
-Bomberman Hero, Bomberman 64, Bomberman Generations...
-Megaman X6 (I like this game for the very reason most people seem to hate it)
-Way of the Samurai and Way of the Samurai 2

Best game you personally don't like.

Gameplay was one of my problems with Star Ocean 3 actually. I think it would have been good, but there was some gamebreaking flaws for me. Too many times in battle I would push the attack button to have my character run toward somewhere else instead of the target, only to get hit and have my battle guage destroyed. This, coupled with the story not being very good made me eventually say screw this stupid game.

I don't get these games either. What is with the Star Ocean series repeatedly sticking you on some little backwater planet for a good portion of the game? It's a complete waste of the concept.

Best game you personally don't like.

I thought the Xenosaga series getting wrapped up after half way through the initial project plans was proof that most people really didn't care for the series.

Never tried it myself but watched my friend play it. *Yawn*

Don't know how good Star ocean 3 is supposed to be but I really didn't like that game much either.

Best game you personally don't like.

Final Fantasy IV
Halo series
Devil May Cry series
World of Warcraft

The only other games I can think of are like Ocarina of Time and FF VII, but I like both those games. Just not as much as everyone else seems to have me believe I should.
