Review scoring: standardization, professionalism, etc.

author=rcholbert
You're right. I am thinking the only thing that needs changing is some users at this point. I can't believe we're having a pointless conversation about arbitrary review systems when the real issue lies with rogue reviewers and people willing to derail said reviews into a 100+ post trollfests.

BFD BFD BFD BFD!
People getting their panties in a bunch when lots of people post because a reviewer's scoring standards were most disagreeable part of it. Sometimes, it's what there is to talk about. If people disagree with the content being said, they talk about that. Then some prick like person jumps in and essentially trolls the people he considers trolling, which is more derailing than what's currently being discussed. Really, you want to talk about standards in the actual context of a review you get shunned. You want to make your own topic about reviewing standards and you get shunned for making a topic thats been repeated tons of times. Fuck, let people discuss. So a topic is following the rules, and if you don't like where its going, the topic is not for you at that moment. Just stay away from it. Being the guy stepping in and saying "I don't like what you are saying in this topic/review.. all of you sux" is not any more amicable than what you do not like reading in your topics.

Anyway. As apathetic as you are to the idea of doing something about our rating system; it really does not hurt to declare an official meaning to each measure of the rating scale. It should be in the review submission rules, Executive Decision #whatever. All reviewers should check these definitions and be aware of them and confirm this is what they are trying to communicate when they make their score. It doesn't solve all problems, but at least the rating system = a more clear and universal communication of the meaning. Don't concentrate so much on the end to all problems. Just try to make the changes that make things better.

Okay, but why did you make a video for this? It's the screenshot with a scripted leaf effect (that doesn't really make sense, but I do not mind anyway). If you needed to show us a bit of music from the map, my opinion is it does not fit well.

If you guys want to post what the stars on a review mean don't throw it into a review's comments. Make a thread about it and post in it instead. Don't continue this derail any longer.

I understand you have the desire of discussing the finer points of what was written in a review. It's reasonable. But to this day, responses discussing the standards in a review has always been relevant and stars alone has never had clear enough context (despite reviews trying to give it some). It's what people want to talk about when they have a strong reaction. If the site ever wants to make a rule to deny discussion of a review's standards, by all means. Maybe RMN should establish an official meaning of their star system as a benchmark for reviewers to refer to.

Well I was going by what seems to be the general consensus on this site. Video game averages in magazines are definitely bumped up in the 7.5/75% range (almost like a C average). 7/10 (or 3.5/5) used to be my average on gamefaqs. I change that to 2.5/5 recently.

And why not, magazines do not wish to besmirch the reputation of a professional game company. Especially when they will potentially be payed for advertising or already are.

Well here most reviews work like this.

1 or less Crap of all Crap, you would hardly find worse.
2. Weak but not a total noob game
3. What you should hope to receive with reasonable effort and good planning.
4. Excels
5. The shining star. Likely a game in the top 1 percent of your favorites.

and we have measures in between.

this is really nice. Really, really nice. except the characterset, it doesnt fit whatsoever.

Not so bad. Things like this are difficult when your game doesn't look flat, but I like the effort he has put in to show the depth.

People will always try to dethrone a king who isn't worthy. Now it plays out on the small scale.

He's doing something right, if he is pointing out the same things I was disappointed in with the game. I have no doubt those are his personal recations to having played it. This arguement is about stars alone. I am the first to admit I feel as strongly about this game because the game has the stats to herald it as the greatest game in the community. No expectations= no visceral reaction when the game feels flat.

I want to say don't all jump a reviewer for having a "radical" overall opinion. However, I also think the most fair reviews take into context experience in a load of other offerings of the same medium. Does not feel like the latter had happened.

Sailarius is being criticized for supposedly writing an ego based review. On the other side of the token, some defenders of this game are coming across as pretty White Knight.
