Your oponion about "RTP Games"
@Kingarthur: Well if somebody puts the time and energy into making a game that looks different, it is only right for that game to get better appreciation over something that uses resources that take no labor.
Beautiful graphics !== Good game.
Moreover, the reverse logic of your theory (using RTP == automatic failure) is absurd and downright insulting to the RTP, its creators, its users, and all the great games and characters that were represented by the RTP.
Videogames are supposed to change and look different from one another.
Commercial video games won't be able to look exactly like another game even if they wanted to due to copyright reasons, the only exception being games made by the same rights holder; and in this regard many sequels of games look almost exactly like their predecessors at times (Fire Emblem 6, 7 and 8 come to mind).
What if Final Fantasy kept using the same resources every game?
I wouldn't mind, personally. I assume some variation in character design and such will exist, of course, and using the same style over and over isn't something I frown upon. It could even become the trademark of that game series.
No matter how good the story was people would eventually get tired of seeing it.
Again, RM history proves you wrong on this regard as far as the RTP is concerned.

A Blurred Line is an great RTP game but that came out a while back.
In the strictest sense, ABL isn't an RTP game as the chipsets that were used were largely from one of the sample games originally bundled together with the Japanese release of RM2K.
In all honesty, RM2K's english RTP is largely different from the original RTP because of many such unofficial addons.
Thats when rpgmaker was relatively new so we didn't care about the using the RTP. But its been years now. The RTP has been seen so much.....and its games that have an unique look that take the spotlight now.
It's only natural that the older RTPs have had more screentime as they have been around much longer. Age, however, has nothing to do with its appeal (or in your case, the lack thereof). RTP games now have just as much a following as they did all those years back assuming the RTP is used in a skillful manner.
I can link several of those games.
For all intents and purposes, this is a topic about the RM RTP. Linking to games not directly related would only detract from the topic at hand. It'd be prudent to save them for a later date.

If you truly want to make your game appeal to the masses it needs to also look unique.
As far as the graphical aspect goes, RM history has said otherwise.
Your oponion about "RTP Games"
Just don't use the RTP music. After that as long as the game is good I am down for anything.
On the contrary, much of the RM2K, RM2K3, RMXP, and RMVX RTP music is memorable; especially the older ones for veteran RM users. It strikes a bell to hear "Battle3" from the RM2K RTP played, for those of us who played the RM2K sample game and the like. ;D
As for the RTP itself, it all depends on the user. I've seen many awesome RTP games, many featuring Alex (among many other RTP-influenced protagonists), and many more are forever remembered as memorable classics (Legion Saga 1 and Final Fallacy come to mind).
Whats the worst thing you ever saw in high school?
I live in NYC. I was in science class during the time the Twin Towers fell. My school was even close to the Manhattan ferry, so I was able to see the destruction from across the water; but it was not the meaningless violence that disgusted me the most that day, it was the attitude of my "peers".
"HAH, we get to go home early!"
"We're gonna die! Hahahaha!"
Suddenly, all those morons that don't know where Washington D.C. is or what 1+1 equals to don't seem that bad anymore.
Misao Voting Started Up!
Kinda wish I knew what the hell was going on in the RM community as of late so I can vote. The effects of not having taken part in anything RM for ages is staggering.
Things still confusing me.
#1: Either have them start up by themselves via Auto-Start or Parallel Processing (requisite switch optional) or call them from somewhere via "Call Common Event".
#3:
It is also impossible for an event to "pause" right in the middle of event processing and then come back to it later without ingenius usage of switches and/or variables and labels. Back in RPG Maker 2000 and 2003, you could call individual Map Events from other events via an event command, but I can see that feature isn't present in RMVX. It might be possible via scripting, but that's for another topic.
#3:
Switch
Data stored as either ON or OFF throughout the game. For example, controls information such as whether a player has received an order to defeat a monster or whether a boss has been defeated.
Variable
Data stored as any integer (maximum 8 numbers long) throughout the game. For example, controls information such as the hero's reputation level or the number of items a player has gathered from around the world and given to a particular person.
Self Switch
A special switch for individual events. It has no visible effect, but rather is used simply to display the status of a given event. For example, controls information such as whether the player has opened a treasure chest.
