One thing I love is when you face the final boss, you beat him relatively easy and he then goes "THIS ISN'T EVEN MY FINAL FORM!" And the real battle begins (or you just get a win handed to you out of cinematic reasons). Perfect opportunity for the BBEG to give a hammy speech and get a new design without needing much justification.
9/10, but still terrible? About game-killing features
For Sephiroth, you actually have to press Square at the right moment to block his melee combo. Since he hits you multiple times, your last chance won't kick in against it. Still, most of the above still applies (and pretty much the rest of the game).
Buying powerful Items near end-game without making the player OP
You could also balance the power of the Holy Cross by making it only trigger on instant death attacks. So you have a limited amount of protection in case you don't have resistant gear.

It's still not very detailed, so I'm not sure if this scale is appropriate for a small village (40x30 tiles total). I could go on with doing maps, but I figure I should get good maps done early on so I won't need help when I continue.

Race and Gender in Games
When it comes to changing the skin color of roles, I did this for one of my characters in RPG Maker MV, not only because I felt like having more skin tones (having such distinct traits helps me tell people apart) but also because I had a better selection of skin in general (the only selections VX Ace had were white, pale, tan and black really).

It's not that I don't like cute elementals, it's just very surprising. Still, RPG Maker XP is the best source for saccharine overdosed sprites.

MV is OUT!
Most of the monster types return in MV's default assets - it completely threw me off in how the elemental spirits were redesigned from "pretty but ferocious" to "disgustingly adorable".
Also, RPG Maker VX is my favourite in terms of music, especially the tracks Battle2 and Scene11. Only thing topping that is Boss1 from RPG Maker 2000.
