It had a wonderful script that they spent three years on, and an exceptional director with an exceptional cast and crew, but it was a small movie, four walls and actors, and yet it was 100 days of shooting.”

Dumb Notes:
-don't write your characters around the story:
i.e. character sees dragon on mountain.
-write the story around your characters:
i.e. character sees dragon, seeing dragon changes character.
-let emotion drive the scene. i.e. Will they make it out of this alive?
-let anger drive the action. i.e. "Are you crazy? I'm not picking that up!"

Everlasting Journey Fan Trailer
Post your overlooked games here.
Since I haven't heard back from anyone whose actually downloaded it. I thought I'd throw in this recent tech demo I made. It's very short, roughly 5 to 10 mins, I think?
http://rpgmaker.net/games/5147/
I'm trying to make a series out of these, but the idea is to encourages users who are still using rpgmaker2003 to carefully examine the techniques found within certain 16bit rpgs and apply these principles and techniques to their own game.
It's basically a study or a frame of reference.
I'm lamenting whether or not I should add more to this one, make it a bit more detailed or descriptive and enable the game's profile page so users can leave comments under the making of section of each scene - (Which I personally I think is a terrible idea.)
…Or I can just leave it unfinished because no one in there right mind would care enough to actually study from this. Because after all this is rpgmaker 2003.
Now, there's two versions:
One is a barebones attempt at recreating the original SNES intro of the game for rpgmaker2003.
The other one, The RMN version is nearly identical to the first. except the text is changed in certain parts and it has an avi file that plays the outro credits… It's-whatever… no comment. Don't ask me about it, please...
But, If nothing else I'm curious to see whether or not the avi will actually play on another person's computer. (there's a problem with a particular codec if you have it installed, which will make the movie go out of sync. But again I don't know since I haven't heard back from anyone whose actually played this)
Ideally after downloading any one of these versions you should check out the making of pages, on the game's profile page to see how they were recreated in rpgmaker2003:
http://rpgmaker.net/games/5147/Scene_2/
I obviously didn't want to add too much more information to this, as explaining the process in step by step detail with pictures would just be too much work for something people couldn't really careless about. But I still want to give out just enough information so that it will encourages users who are still using rpgmaker2003 to start challenging themselves, creatively with the maker.
There's no special gimmicks or coding required. It's just looking at rpgmaker2003 in a different way;
If after playing this game you find yourself saying "Huh, this is interesting! Maybe I could do something like this for my own game!"
Then I've done my job. If not, please tell me what I can do to make this more clear for other users. Maybe I should add a video of the original SNES intro to the front page to give users a better idea of what this demo is about? I dunno.
At it's worst, it's probably too boring, uninteresting and not very clear to give anything of any significant value to other users.
Either way, let me know what you think.

Review Scores: An Informal Poll
.5- Needs Work/Incomplete
1- Good Start/Playable.
2-Interesting ideas, hampered by poor execution but still worth checking out.
Something like an entry for a 2 day game making competition or like "Numbers" I love that game. it's short, ideally I would've liked it to be longer. But it's great! I can play it over and over again. It just needs a bit more to it to become a full game.
3-Average, playable, the standard, what most rpgmaker games should adhere to, and should be scored as due to the nature of the engine. If the game still uses RTP or has poor battle animations or Charas, It should not go above 3.
maybe something like, Leo&Leah, Demon Legacy or Hero's Realm.
4-Well polished. Well executed. Very creative.
something like Alter A.I.L.A Genesis, Necropolis and maybe even, Starless Umbra or Phantom Legacy
5-Goes above and beyond what you would normally expect from an rpgmaker game. Moves the engine forward. A must play.
Something like, "Alex Unleashed" by Ran Master (if it were complete) or "Fey" by Ashes of Emeralds or "Starless Umbra" by DragonHeartMan or "Beautiful Escape Dungeoneer" by calunio maybe "Space Funeral" by catmitts and maybe even Pirates: The Legend of the Silver Crescent by Carius, but I'm not sure; games which not only use the rpgmaker engine to it's strength but create something entirely original out of it's assets and materials. Naturally very few rpgmaker games adhere to this category due to the nature of rpgmaker, which is all the more reason why we should play them.
I wish people would get it out of their head that getting a 2 or 3 is a bad score. 2 is an okay score, 3 is a good score, 4 is a great score.
I dunno, most games on rpgmaker.net do not deserve 5s, they deserve 3s at most and the rating system should be moderated in order to adhere to this; There are a lot of great games of varying depth and quality on rpgmaker.net but no one is ever going to be able to find them if everyone keeps marking their favourite game as a 4 or a 5.
Extra-Life 2013: Play video games for charity!
I've donated 25.00 to your noble cause comrade!
I know nothing is set in stone at this point other than streaming for 25 hours on November 2nd. But if you're planning on sticking to the 1 hour per game format could you add either, Name73, Origin, Oathguard or the recently released Phantom Legacy to the list?
I'll probably have to scrounge up a link for the first two.

YS 3: Wanderers of the Uncanny
I apologize. I thought I made this very clear in the game’s description but I guess I haven’t.
This game is a study. The idea is to study how this game could be recreated in rpgmaker2003 and
then use these principles while creating your own game in rpgmaker2003.
YS 3 isn’t a good game. But it’s an interesting game. It has cut scenes and parallax scrolling.
Wouldn't it be neat if someone could make an entirely original rpgmaker2003 game based on the look of YS 3?
Again, I apologize for any confusion.

[Request] [Plug-in] Multiple/Simultaneous Panoramas RM2K3?
Again, Thank you guys for taking the time to reply!
@Dookie
I've actually done what you've described, to a similar effect, on another rpgmaker game I was working on prior to this one, I've posted a video below.
Picture

As you can see, it's very similar to what you described:
Using Battle animations acting as the 1st layer,
Pictures as the 2nd and 3rd layer
"Same layer as hero" as the 4th
"Below hero" as 5th
And using the panorama as the 6th layer.
But In this particular example the player is set as a stationary Battle Animation which places it as the top layer in rpgmaker2003 and leaves the other layers to move freely underneath it.
The problem with using this method though is that, it's primarily a run-on-scene; Beyond this particular scene, you can't really use it for much of anything else, since the player can't really interact with it. So it isn't a very good example since it's just one giant cutscene.
What I actually want to do in rpgmaker2003 is like what DHM described; to have multiple parallax backgrounds and have them behave like their current implementation in rpgmaker2003, in order to create a scene where there are multiple backgrounds that move as the player does; Multiple backgrounds that the player can freely move on top of. For example the Village of Redmont in YS III for the SNES, which utilizes a static image panorama in addition with a horizontal scrolling panorama to create parallax scrolling. I've posted a video below.
Picture

Now when trying to implement this into rpgmaker2003, this quickly becomes a problem - Because of the nature of RPGMAKER2003, you really only have one panorama to work with.
So then if you were to recreate this in rpgmaker2003 how do you go about implementing that second panorama; that static image of the clouds that's displayed independently of the panorama?
Well, you can try achieving this through Pictures. But as everyone knows Pictures take draw priority over other layers.
Picture

So in order to rectify this I then tried creating a picture of the lower tileset that would be placed over the first image so that it'd behave similar to a second panorama.
As you can see, this works up until the player leaves area, because as DHM mentioned
…Which I believe is -645; I'm not sure if this is fixed in the rpgmaker2009 patch that Cherry made (If anyone can confirm this let me know and I'll see what I can do from there) but rpgmaker2003 wouldn't allow me to place images beyond a -640 x coordinate.
Picture

…And even if I can get this image to move beyond -640, this particular work around
would only work for this area and few other areas in the game.
But It won't work for all of them as you can imagine from the the examples I've provided below;
Some of these examples would have the player walk into the image you would use as a
second panorama and immediately cover the player.
But hopefully now you can understand why, creating multiple panoramas through
other means is a feature that rpgmaker2003 simply cannot achieve on it's
own and perhaps why creating a plugin for multiple panoramas (if it's possible)
would be a really neat feature to have for rpgmaker2003.
Again, thank you guys very much for taking the time to read and reply to this post.

[Request] [Plug-in] Multiple/Simultaneous Panoramas RM2K3?
This request is for Rpgmaker 2003:
Hi guys, I apologize, I posted this topic in the "Help Requests & Resources" but after doing a once over of the forums I realized maybe "Programming & Plugins" would be a more appropriate place to post this topic, as I would more likely to get a response.
Again, this isn't this so much as a request as it's more of a discussion, I guess maybe? I'm not sure...
I'm not quite sure if these are the appropriate channels to post this in either. I'm hoping maybe Cherry or another experienced member, familiar with the outs and ins of rpgmaker2003 would help me out with this though:
Now, I'm not quite sure how rpgmaker2003 works outside of it's initial features, but would it be possible to create a plugin/patch for rpgmaker2k3 that would allow rpgmaker2003 to show more than one panorama? In other words, to show two functioning, parallax backgrounds, one on top of the other at the same time? More importantly has this already been done before?
I imagine, if someone were to enable this feature, ideally It would behaviour similarly to how rpgmaker2003 handles pictures within the maker:
The panorama assigned with the biggest number would be the first panorama layer the player sees and any panorama assigned with a receding number would be seen beneath it.
As always, It will be up to the user to create images that would accommodate this feature; to craft images to the correct size and transparency that would allow the player to see both images at the same time - one on top of the other. Because of the way rpgmaker2003 handles images assigned as panoramas.
Lag will probably be an issue of course, but at this point I just want to know if this feature is actually possible. Is it possible to create a patch or a plugin that would allow rpgmaker2003 to show two panoramas simultaneously, one on top of the other?
Edit: I remember someone at some point mentioned they were working on something like this some time ago. But unfortunately they weren't able to get it to work for some reason.
Of course, there's probably a very good reason as to why someone hasn't made a patch for this yet. So If nothing else, perhaps someone could give us an update as to why it simply isn't possible to get panoramas to behave this way with a patch or a plugin in rpgmaker2003. :(
Again, I apologize for any discretion and thanks to everyone who reads or replies to this post.

An Official *English* Version of 2k3 Approaches!
...Hi everyone,
I know a lot of you may not know me as I haven't been very active within this community or have even released a game.
But I just want to let you guys know that this is the opportunity, I think I've been waiting for ever since I first started using rpgmaker2003, 7 years ago: to finally be able to legally create and sell your own game in rpgmaker2003.
I've always wanted to do something like what David Gilbert has accomplished with WadgetEyeGames and his various releases with Adventure Game Studio (also, a 10 year old program) such as The Blackwell Legacy series and Gemini Rue.
...I'm not quite how everyone else feels about this idea. But this is an endeavour I've honestly wanted to pursue for quite some time now. I'd be willing to pay 100, 150, maybe even 200.00 dollars a piece, 400 even, just to finally be able to legally own and if possible, actually do business with this program.
I know everyone here probably has very good and very justifiable reasons for not supporting this petition or showing interest. But I also want you guys to know that by not signing this petition, by not showing interest, you're also putting someone at a very serious disadvantage here.
...I want to apologize, to anyone who happens to disagree with my situation. It's just that, rpgmaker2003, specifically, is something I've always been very sincere and very passionate about. Something I've always wanted to do incredible things with, things that will essentially become meaningless if this somehow doesn't go through.
So needless to say I'll be very upset about this; I don't know what else I can say to describe to you guys how important this is to me personally, to sign this petition… :(
...So if you can, please, please sign this petition.
Looking Back: Hero's Realm
I played Hero's Realm, 5 years ago; back when it was first released on the forums of gaming world and the game has just never really appealed to me. I could never get past the initial stages of the game, because there are some things I’ve always, oddly felt, just shouldn’t be in rpgmaker.
But that’s not the point.
Hero's Realm in many ways has sort of become the focal point of rpgmaker.net. Whenever I think of rpgmaker.net, I immediately think of Hero's Realm. It’s helped create our community and perhaps even helped establish the identity of our community as well.
This idea of the hobbyist rpgmaker; that you don’t need necessarily need an extraordinary amount of graphics or an incredible story in order to make a good game. All you really need is passion, maybe a bit of determination and this genuine love for the medium that all we grew up with.
It’s funny how time changes everything.
