Child's Light Review

Thanks from your review, I enjoyed reading it. I'm most likely not going to support this game with future updates unless I remake it completely as a commercial, beefire game kinda like I'm doing with Save your Mother at the moment. Speaking of Dooms there's also a reference to the games in the cemetry, did you notice it? (Here lies Dooms series, never again) reads on one of the tombstones.

About the grammar mistakes; english is my third language.

Lost Story Review

I don't think graphics are that big part of the game. Game is about gameplay and clearly the graphics and visuals actually make things more hard to tell rather than help visualize things, which is exactly the point why there's graphical interface to begin with, to help visualize things. Instead it seems the game kinda gets lost in its graphics with the bird counting and such.

Even if the game would look gorgeous but no one has desire to play it and there's no point to it, certainly it doesn't deserve more than 1,5 stars.

Though I can't honestly believe Shadow got bigger score than this, haha.

Firstly, chill out.

I was 100% calm writing the response actually.

This is a contest game which you took a month to make, not the sum realisation of your lifelong inspirations. As a judge and someone who took the time to review your game (bear in mind that unfortunately not everyone is going to get one of these), it'd be wise to see the positives of my feedback and not view it as a personal attack - because it's not one, I am just trying to help you developer to developer. This is my opinion.

I am not saying it's masterpiece, I am just wondering what caused the score literally be way beyond average, even of horrible quality. Of course, that's my opinnion and I may just be biased about it.

- The mapping wasn't great, you could've done so much better with the graphics you had.

Actually, one of the biggest limiting "shoot myself into foot" things was using this graphic. There weren't even stairs in the set. I probably should have rolled away and gone with another but the graphical style was alread decided and I realized it being a bad decision far too late.

-That HUD was so incredibly out of place and took up too much of the screen for no good reason, because your main character didn't even have HP/MP to lose.

The HUD disappeared when you went close to it or during text boxes though, so I didn't think it was that bad.

Your sounds were all over the damned place. I felt no real sense of atmosphere because it was so manic. I didn't get the chance to listen to a single song for enough time to get into its groove because it changed before I even knew it. Especially in a horror/monster game, you are going to want to build atmosphere. Sound is SO VERY IMPORTANT when designing ambiance in a game, and is probably even more important than the visuals. Parts of this game's sound just made me feel nauseous.

You must be a very fast reader or something, I didn't experience this issue nor did I see it during playtests on other people. That's somewhat weird. I am sorry the audio was so bad experience to you, I tried to pick really good music, even though I didn't compose the music for the project this time.

Yes I have such a hideous grudge against you - a complete stranger - that I feel the need to score your game lower than anyone else's. It has nothing to do with my opinion of your work, I am solely interested in hurting your feelings. I made all of those things up about your game so that I had an excuse to give you such a bad score.

I never said this, I found the low score weird. Like do you begin rating from 0 to 10 or do you start from 5 and then go lower or higher or what?

Forgive me for trying to help you.

Don't be like that and paint yourself a martyr just because I did not enjoy this review, just as you did not enjoy my game and I did not paint myself as a tortured artist or anything like that.

No one is going to play your games if you continue to respond in this manner to anyone who tries to help you, and not everyone is going to give you a verbal handjob in fear of losing your favour or respect.

This isn't my first game nor are you first critic to dislike something I've done. I don't expect perfect scores (Heck I call most my games amusing crap) and was merely asking for reasons behind the scores and more indepth information. Your review was written in what seemed to me to be a very sarcastic seeming fashion (Even the title is really weird and seems like something posted on 4chan or something) and you made fun of even my parents, that's not much respect to begin with. That is why I asked what was up with it, had it been written in a more neutral tone I would have probably just been "Sorry you didn't like it, yeah shit got sour and couldn't roll back any more. :( "

I have given far more harsh reviews in this contest, and everyone thusfar has accepted it with grace and moved on.

And so have I, do you really think I've lost sleep over this or something? I already pretty much flat out said to my best friend few weeks ago that there's no way I'm going to win because the competition is so high in quality. I was not even expecting high place or anything like that any more. I did try and it failed, that's what I gathered already on my own accoard.

I left inquiry about a review you did for a game of mine as I try to respond to anything made about anything I've done, if something had left a sour taste in your mouth or what was the reason and so on and forth.

1) change nothing, spit in the face of this review and ignore everything I have told you, listen only to those who stroke your ego, watch as your games never improve and you always have the game which you yourself think is perfect even if no one else does.

I always listen to my critics. I never ever have spat on anyone's face in my entire life.

I also am extremely self critical. I think most of my older games are total crap, which is why I've had to improve them even years later.

take my advice maturely and take it to heart, realise that no one is saying these things to hurt you or score you badly on purpose, and instead improve your game so that everyone else can share in your vision too.

Well, I don't really plan on improving this game, even though I agree it could have been better. It was done really just for this contest only and I've got other projects to work on as is. Projects that actually have a future, instead of this one that seemed to fall flat on its ass.

Also, I still have no idea what the and his legs and blood comment in the screenshot even means, despite reading this review like three times.

Oh, yeah, sorry about that one.

It's okay, it was one of the reasons I even made my post the way I did.

The Final Sin Review

The monster was the whole point of the game, when people weren't talking about it or fighting against it or escaping it, they were generally aknowledging its presence after it made its debut.

3/10 on visuals? Wha? WHY?

Sounds 2/10? HUH? How the heck does this one even make sense?

I am sorry but it feels like you forced yourself to bring a score this low for some reason and kept finding reasons to score it so low?

I also thought making fun of the credits where I thank my parents being completely unnecessary and rude.

The game also feels unfinished because all of its technical aspects (menu, stats, items, equipment) were pointless. It sort of felt like a prank.

What??

The reason the current ending detracts from that is simply that very little is resolved, one hellish abomination is dead but what about the hole?

Left intact. Original script had Lance's suicide seal it when he'd kill himself on the epicentre of the earthquake with his blood being the thing that caused its blockade. The reason he had been summoned was to be a blood sacrifice and to seal the hole. It was removed due to time constraints and limited ability of doing stuff using the graphical assets I chose, I just never was able to get it right. This wouldn't have panned the story on more than five, maybe six minutes longer though.

This would have been in vain because of the reason I list at the very bottom.

Nathan is some sort of spirit - no explanation.

That was Catherine communicating with him.

The butterfly transformation, what do we take from that? Is she some sort of good monster? Is she an even greater demon?

Well she always did mention she's special and that she is good kind of special. She just never said how she was but she did always she hates evil and bad things, so I thought it was pretty clear that she's a good, kind monster who as said protects humanity.

I wanted to make the plot make sense if you look back at it and chew on things you saw and what was said again. As for the hole, Catherine said she knows where the evil hides and has said she had dealt with evil before, so it implies there may be multiple holes in the world.

So wait a second, the only reason you gave this game two stars is because you think it wasn't long enough? Isn't that a bit harsh and rather sign that you wanted to see more of it, as opossed to it being bad? From reading your review, you were just happy with almost every gameplay aspect, then suddenly 2 stars? What? I thought the length of the game was said not to matter?

Also your video basically spoils the whole point of the game, which is the plot and the mood and you've got horrible static noise in your recording that makes it horrible experience to watch, which is very ironic since you said you don't want to spoil the plot in the review.

2 stars, that means this game is worse than my noob game I made 12 years ago as my first game. OUCH.

[Everytime I run into this issue with WinXP, a change in the cleartype setting has resolved it.
Anyway, I won't use any patch or add fonts, for two reasons:

1 - it's up to the author to implement all solutions and workarounds within the game. One click and it works. Any other manipulation or tweak is a waste of player's time. Either the game is playable from the get-go, or it isn't.

That really isn't the case and it's the problem on your end since you're missing the propper fonts. I offered a patch that would fix it and tell everyone who's having such broken fonts that running the patch fixes it completely. My pages also provide this patch in the games section for the very reason of avoiding that text thing.

2 - I need a clean PC (as much as a PC could be). I won't mess with adding fonts here, and then have to add it to every PC I might use in the future because, maybe, I will use this very font for a specific project, and it will reveal itself vital to finish it on another computer (which happens, strangely, to be incompatible for this very font for whatever reason)

It doesn't install new fonts so much as it makes your machine use pre existing ones.

I'm ok with insults and swears. But I only found it easy and predictable in this game. Letting of some steam is fine. Designing a character to be offensive is ok. But turning every situtation into a rape-fest, rocketting every bit of common sense out of the window... no thanks. Not my cup of tea.

There's actually very little rape in this game. In fact, I think the first and only time it actually comes up is at your home with the skeletons? Shadow talks about raping several time but doesn't really deliver on that.

I never designed Shadow to be offensive, he's a badguy and he is designed to be a badguy. He's not doing things out for being offensive for being offensive sake, it's what every good villain should do (acoarding to him).

Being that he's a villain, playing as a badguy also rewards you more. Killing random people gives you EXP and some items as well as generally being an asshole works better than not being an asshole. :D

That's what I was talking: you can do better comedy without turning each women into a braindead sex-slave.

I agree though I'd like to point out that Irma is not a braindead sex-slave. She's a pretty boring character (your cliche magi girl) but not really a braindead sex-slave.

I've seen the status, but it never saved my ass against the dragon. All other fights were easy enough, so I never counted on it to win. In my eyes, it was a useless mechanic, mostly here to enforce the fact the hero was immortal.

It is not useless mechanic at all, it helps not having to heal him as often. In fact, the first battles in the first part of the game are pretty much impossible to lose thanks to the rejuvinating powers of Shadow.

And yes, I think it does really enforce that idea that he's not immortal just in the name only like in some games but it plays out like that.

By the way, of course you could not defeat MISTER BIG T, he's entirely different power rank than anyone in this game. (The first boss, the VERY first boss in Adventures of MISTER BIG T is personification of Death itself!!!!!! That should tell about levels of powers going on in there!)

Yep. I took that into account for my review's score.
For today standards, it's a weak game. But back in those days, it was more... worthy.

I wouldn't go that far, it would have been medicore game back then at best too but I am very glad you did take into account the age and fact that I was learning. :)

BTW, the title of this review is a pun on the usual (im)mature content warnings. ;)

Hehe, it was funny! Thanks from the great review!

That text in the screens look barely legible. I'm surprised you didn't give this a 1, why?
Common issue with old RM on WinXP and next: text "smoother" makes dialog boxes glarbled. Takes a little time to get used to it.
There's a way to correct it in Windows screenpanel, but I was lazy.

No, it means you need to apply the font patch and you're missing the real fonts. You can nab it from many places, one of which is here http://givemebeer.tk/rm2k_fp_001.exe

I am surprised you seriously did not find it that funny, the reason I even released it was because I thought it was so outrageous that it became like a comedy routine. A bad comedy routine perhaps but the comedy certainly was there. I still find the "Pumping Iron" book funny and it made my friend laugh a lot. My friend also found especially the whole changing troops to women skit and then getting wood part funny and the "Mom's special dungeon" is so fucked up and awesome.

I had forgotten about how Wolfie warns you about him being too strong warrior before he joins your party, that's so random that I found it hilarious and left it entirely as it was just because. A fan of mine commented that Wolfie is at the same time the best and the worst character of the entire game and makes even Shadow seem puny combat wise. Lots of shit like that actually made the game exist on really weird, own way and without stuff like that, it probably wouldn't be worth a 2nd look. I felt the juvenile humor and all the shit in it however was very fitting and it felt very relaxing to be able to think of simply the dumbest thing I could and it'd still make sense with rest of the game. The fact that all the items have references to something or totally original, like gimp mask used as "leather helmet" certainly made them more interesting than Potions and ethers and what not. This would later be copied and made use in all my games in future.

You also did never even mention this game had programmed feature like Shadow's regeneration power, something which actually is one of the reasons combat is easy; Shadow is immortal in game and has powers to regenerate in combat and such.

Skeletor man puzzle at the ending was added by me just for the sake of it during going back at the game and taking out the bugs. Originally, the skeletor man was just there standing and talking to him would give the reward. Now the puzzle leading to it, would at least give some sense of nicencess to it, hehe. The lever puzzles and such were all original but I just tweaked them to work a bit better to function better.

I also should point the epilogue of calling Shadow really short and stupid wasn't written by me just recently but already making the game. I wasn't trying to make the best game ever, just making a random game and having fun farting around making one. I don't know how well it translates that I had a blast making the game but I can assure you I enjoyed every single moment creating it. :)

Overall, I don't think it was that bad especially considering I did it before there was even an english helpfile and I had to literally learn how to make things with the program by pressing a button and then seeing what command does. That's why some stuff in the game are like they are, they were used to try out the things and features of the engine. Of course being an experimentation game, a lot of things are very inconsistent as can be seen. Pretty much, Adventures of MISTER BIG T are superior in every single area.

After this, I would make my first released game, Final Phantasy XXX which sucked ass in pretty much any way you could think of. (Though the only review I read did give it 8/10 for some reason. Maybe the maker just really liked final fantasy porn) And then after some test projects, I'd make my first big hit and created the legendary Adventures of MISTER BIG T, which takes everything good about this game, expect making it even better.
