Averting level grinding

author=Trihan
Finally, bosses are "tuned" for a specific level which is what you're "expected" to be at when you fight them. However, fighting them at a significantly lower level than this causes some of the mechanics/abilities in the fight to be removed, and the boss's stats are lowered somewhat. Likewise, if you fight the boss at a significantly higher level, it gains extra mechanics/abilities (designed to make it quite a bit more challenging) and improved stats.

If you do this, make sure that it's set such that bosses become stronger/weaker at a slower rate than the player. If they do so at a faster rate, you're punishing the player who does more, and if they do so at about an equal rate, there's really no point in having levels at all.

Personally, I'd leave that specific part of the system out entirely, but it's not a completely unworkable idea.

Touhou Fantasy Review

I swear that I've heard the name of "Touhou" from somewhere else, but I do not recall from where. I think it's a game, but my knowledge in this matter is not to be trusted.

It's a series of indie scrolling shooter games from Japan. The plots of each individual game aren't that complex, but since each one of them (currently 19 in the series) effectively adds a new region/set of characters to the world, continuity as a whole can sometimes seem a little impenetrable.

I haven't played Touhou Fantasy yet, but I'd imagine that it runs into the problem that if it were to try to explain everything the player needs to know about the world, the exposition might begin to bore the people who are familiar with everything, and the majority of a fangame's potential audience is going to come from the second group.

Primeforce

There seems to be a bug in the version of the game that I downloaded: Obtaining any item (Including the door key) results in the game crashing. The error code is as follows:

"Script 'Window_Base' line 45: RGSSError occurred.

failed to create bitmap."

NaGaDeMo Review Drive

I was able to read the dialogue and the opening text, but all of the menus (main menu, pause menu, battle menus, character status, save screen) were textless.

NaGaDeMo Review Drive

Can Primeforce be removed from the list of games to be reviewed? It has a crippling bug where obtaining any item (including a key required to open a door in order to progress through the game) will cause the game to crash.

I'll write up a review for the game if we're supposed to review it anyway, but there's not much (accessible) content to talk about.

edit: Also, Scarlet Skies has no download.

It's probably because a lot of these seem like early build demos and not enough is shown to accurately score them.

All of my no-star reviews thus far have been for this reason. I'm not against giving scores to demos in certain circumstances, but none of the games I've reviewed thus far have had enough content for me to feel that I've seen enough of the game to give a rating. (Uchioniko came close due to showcasing high-level play at the beginning, but the low-level play section was cut short too early for a good judgement. Mana Quest might have had enough if my play session hadn't been cut short by a glitch in the game).

Basically, I'd add a rating if I felt that I'd seen enough content that the rating would remain at lest vaguely accurate between a release of the full game and whenever I'd get around to updating the review.

Rather than have players to visit a restoration point, I decided to experiment to see if I could do something interesting with TP. So, what I did was allow characters to regenerate HP and MP according to how much TP they had at the end of each fight.

That actually does sound like a really neat idea. I think I never noticed that because I didn't use the in-battle recovery skill (which, if I remember correctly, is the only TP-activated ability in the demo), so I was ending each battle with full (or close enough to full) TP. Starting the player with less TP (or making the stronger attack skills use small amounts of TP) might help to balance the mechanic a bit.

The OutCasts Review

Out of curiosity, how far did you get into the game in terms of gameplay? (ie. where were you when you stopped playing?) Lengthwise, I think the game took me about 2.5 hours to reach the end.

Nagademo Review Drive: "Just June Jollies"!

I'll do a review for NCP_Productions's Mana Quest.

Story line Maker Event

I like the theory behind having open voting for these events, but since people not reading all of the stories because they're too long is an issue, I think that having a panel of judges would be better in this case. Rating things on a scale of 100 points seems needlessly precise: I'd say just having judges rate them from 0-5 (or even 0-3) should be sufficient.

BTW: What type government does Japan have?

Constitutional Monarchy. Bicameral legislature (The Diet) headed by a prime minister, with the position of Emperor as a mostly ceremonial post.
