Emo Require: Do RPGs need a story?

author=Jericho
I disagree. tastes are subjective and people like games for different reasons. repeat thread in one month.

you're wrong, that's impossible...

There are too many factors to include when trying to figure this kind of thing out. I enjoy the Mario & Luigi series a lot, and the story is laughable. But what Darken said is right, I think charm is the right word to use in this case, because the game has a lot of it. It has very good scenario design, which is key in creating a world that you want to explore while making it feel larger than it really is. As a wise man once said, the journey is more important than the destination...

Timed hits in Rm2k3 DBS?

What Cherry said. It's simple. :)

You can also cut your animation up into say, 3 different animation slots if you don't want to go the picture route. This way, you can implement your key inputs/code in between the playing of each animation in battle events. So for example, an animation with 75 frames would be split up into 3 animations, each being 25 frames with code in between where you want. The way the DBS works, you aren't able to notice the chopped up animation. It's smooth.

I've said too much...I must disappear.

Dragon Age 2

Hm, I take back what I said about this game before. It's actually pretty good! The demo wasn't a good representation of this game. It's probably because I enjoy the character interactions a lot, which was absent there. But, like everyone says, the environments become way too stale. I was starting to notice even in Act 1. The implementation of a central hub works almost perfect mechanically, but it lacked...I guess the "magic" that is supposed to sustain something like that.

I haven't beaten it yet, but I enjoy this. The combat is a+. I...I like this game.

Battle Animation

Fun Fact: The DBS allows multiple animations, one for each party member. You could have up to 5 at once during battle once you count skills, spells, and weapon animations.

Why did Enterbrain not allow this anywhere else? The world may never know...

Thank you for this, WolfCoder. :)

Neok has learned ability: "Walk"

I need these battle animations. Thank you, Neok...

where will you be going when rmn shuts down?

I will be searching for friends....

It would suck to see this website go down because of a few people, really.
I think the problem extends beyond recent arguments.

Ciel already explained it well enough, actually. Flaccid user-base perpetuated by crap clogging up the front page while interesting things left to wallow below the radar. There's very little sense of community and a lot of hostility while the senior members care to do little else but sit in an IRC chat room and fellate on-another's games instead releasing updates of their quality games to promote more activity. I myself am / was guilty of this; but that's just the way I work. A community of veterans who diligently keep to themselves like I do doesn't promote activity and collaboration. During the short time I frequented the shmup IRC channel, I actually felt motivated because I wasn't alone. There were other people there who took game making seriously. I had not even realized these people were even making games.

YDS is what can be considered the ideal member. Updates frequently, releases often, and collaborates while not being pretentious twat... And before this erupts, let me close by saying I have nothing against the great majority of shmup members personally.

Yeah, this is how I feel!

I have no idea what goes on in these forums anymore, but I think part of the issue is that the forums rarely (if ever) help in creating new ideas and is just a place to mess around. This isn't usually a problem, but people who take things too seriously or not have thick enough skin can get crushed by going here. Most English RM communities have been like that, and it's disappointing. This coupled with the amount of trash flooding the front page, and I can see why all of this happened. Maybe forums should just not exist. Everybody who visits them is in irc, anyway.

Someone needs to implement sadtune.mp3 once you open this topic.
