I always pick up Magus because

vanquishing him with Frog doesn't really do anything but change the ending slightly.

Plus, I believe he is one of the three characters who has a billowing "something" during the intro to the final Lavos fight! (The other two being Chrono and Marle)

He also has words for Queen Zeal (and alters the boss music to his own theme), not to mention allows for the use of the absurdly overpowered Omega Flare.

I beat the game last night, and It's just so damn easy with Magus Lucca and Robo.

Lavos 2 - Omega Flare until all parts dead, heal beam as necessary. Status immunity is so dirt common; you dont have to worry.

Lavos 3 - Uzzi Punch left bit twice and it dies. Right bit drops defense, Omega flare several times. He revives bit, keep using omega flare, center lavos dies. He raises defense, then immediatley drops it to revive lavos; keep spamming the same attack and use megaelixers they essentially GIVE YOU 12 and congratulations; you just face smashed the final boss.
