American Exceptionalism: I drank the kool-aid. Did you?

@Holbert : What I wanted to mean with my post is that you cannot really know what the population think just by judging from the media. Okay, Sarkozy was elected so for sure the governement is leading the country in a righty way. But what it is to say "France is nationalist?" Sarkozy was elected with 53,06% voices against the left-wing candidate, and today he is strongly criticized from the left and the right wings. Of course, media don't show what the opposition do. Yes, of course, media show things. But they don't show other things that happen too. Also, nationalism can take several shapes. In France you will not see a politician wearing a french flag on his jacket. You will not see blue-white-red colors everywhere during elections. You will not see a politician saying "we're the best nation in the world" (and it seams to be, in the US, the same speech for the democrates as well as for the republicans, from what the french media show me - actually, if I had to sum up what TV showed me during the recent elections in the US, I would say "democrat and republican people in the US are nationalist" - and I'm certainly wrong! I'm pretty sure I'm wrong. But this is what TV channels showed me). I would say that, for what concern the word nationalism, in France it's more linked to institutions, to the Republic, not to the "people" (historical figures...). I'm probably not clear, no matter.

About the veil, it's a matter of secularism (secularity?). France, since the Revolution, has put the religion on "taboo". You even could say that religion is banned of our schools, in the politics' speech, etc. Our president don't swear on the Bible, etc. That affair of veil at school was here a long time before Sarkozy's election in 2007.

But the subject is not here. To me, the problem is that there are people to say "us" and "them". "Our boys, their bad guys". It's a narrow-minded vision of the world. Of course it's temptating to regard "our" respective nations as "great" nations. But what's in a nation? A complex construction over centuries including migrations, wars, crisis... US people? Historical migrants. French people? A mix of several gaulish, celtic, roman peoples. Why should a country refuse to a man to choose the country he wants to live in? If he pays the taxes, where's the problem? :P There's nothing more arbitrary than being born in THAT country and not THAT other country. It's all about determinism. You have no choice at all...

American Exceptionalism: I drank the kool-aid. Did you?

Why you rate American nationalism with China's and Japan's (read: scary) strikes me as odd, especially when you have countries in the EU that express just as much nationalism, if not more, like France.

I think you cannot say that. :P I'm not saying that because I'm french (I could be "defending" my country etc. but that's not the point), but because you surely know France by what media show about it. And there is nothing worse than media manipulation. We all here have a deformed vision of other countries.

Well, I've read quickly the topic and I would say that too many people here are taking shortcuts, they have a simply vision of our world. "We helped them..." "We did that" etc. It was not you nor me fighting in these wars. Personnally I'm an anti-nationalist and even, anti-patriotist. We're all human beings (okay okay I know "peace and love" it's old-fashioned); I could have be born (erf I'm sure this sentence is not correct xD) in China, in Africa... It's a chance for us, living in powerful countries, to have the possibility to help people not as lucky as us. And it is a duty too. Just think about universal determinism...

Too bad I don't have the words to express all the things I think about. ><

Favorites Songs from Bands/Artists

Turisas - The Dnieper Rapids

It's viking metal, but even if you don't like metal I strongly recommend this song (and the entire album) to you. My brother, who's really not into this kind of music, felt in love with it. Of course you will hear that song for the first time and say "it's too "noisy", or "wtf the voice is awful". Then you should listen to it twice. ^^

It's just so powerful and epic, but still melodic at the same time. :P

RMN Pixel Art Contest

@D-Bones: Pixel-art doesn't like .jpg, you should save your pictures in .png (it's a non-destroyer format). ;)

My Screenshot is Bigger Than Yours!

Totally agree, it's nearly perfect!

RMN Pixel Art Contest

A P-A contest yeah!
I'm participating. ^^

(I've helped making a P-A and game design website, but it's in French so I don't think it would help people here ^^").

@All: great work!

EDIT:

I'm done!
One entire day of work (many hours just for the man in blue). =_=

I recommend zooming on it, it looks better. xD

I have used 21 colors, just the same as Ocean! Pretty funny. ^^
It was hard for me because I decided to use the same colors as for my game:

My Screenshot is Bigger Than Yours!

@Mr.Nemo : I really like these graphics, especially the one with the small houses. There is homogeneity. You wrote that it's still a WIP so I'm not commenting too much. :p But I would say that it's missing shadows to get the volume clearly shown.

Omg, I'm crazy D:

Don't really like the nose but it's great. ^^

[Complete] Elegy's Eve

Great job on the atmosphere dude but I think the game is pretty difficult too. xD

Japanese Internet vs. North American Internet (pic)

In France the maximum you can get is about 20mbps.

And I pay 30€/month for 10mbps.
