Creator handicap during play testing

author=hedge1
If you want to handicap yourself, don't allow yourself to use anything that a player may not know or understand. If there's a particularly well hidden treasure, don't pick it up. If a certain boss has a major weak point, don't abuse it. If a certain item has a hidden property, avoid it. I think that will give you the best noob-friendly play test.

I feel like this is a solid piece of advice. And if you aren't exactly sure how to discern what your player might and might not know or understand upon first picking up your game, it can be helpful to have someone not only play test it, but allow you to watch while they play test it (via screensharing or etc).

It can give you a good idea firsthand of what players are going to be thinking about as they begin, the sort of things they'll examine or the strategies they'll employ going in blind, and what they will and won't see. Since you can watch the entire process, you can apply their results back into your play tests as your handicap (though the more variety of testers you get to determine how to handicap, the better, of course).

Hi there!

Thank you!

& It runs a lot better than I expected! Usually mac ports of a long-standing windows software are flimsy or just the windows version in a nice wrapper (so all the hotkeys and etc are the same and some small functions won't work all that well) but MV was surprisingly well-put together! I think it even runs better than VXA did on my Windows machine.

Hi there!

HELLO. I'm Pai--I'm a freelance artist by day and... also an artist by night. I've already started getting into the site having submitted a game and whatnot, but I only just realized that there are also forums! Huzzah.

I've been using rpgmaker for a number of years, but since MV's been out I've been using it quite a lot more, as it finally comes for my OS (hi I'm a mac, please forgive me). I'm not the best at overall game design, as my strengths lie in polish and small details (and visuals, I guess), but that doesn't keep me from trying and enjoying the process!

Anyway; wonderful to meet everyone! <:

Aubade

I love the atmosphere this has; looking forward to seeing more.
Subbed as well!

Craig

Thank you so much! :D
Perhaps one day, he may finally obtain his MANLY PHYSIQUE...

I'd never even considered others might want to--but sure, feel free! <:

... a longer version of it with more challenging puzzles.

That's the goal! From the positive response I've gotten from the game so far, it happening is extremely plausible. <: Hopefully with more practice putting together puzzles, I'll get more clever about them.
But thank you so much!

(thank you charblar too!)

So I left the house and now I'm stuck.
Tried to use anything on everything .. couldn't get many more items than the potion ingredients, tho.

Is a lot of fun! I really love the style of dear Craig. Endearing and funny.

Have you taken Richard's stick yet? ;> It'll give you the WEDGE command for certain things you couldn't use an extra action on before. That'll help! And if you've already done all that--you might be overlooking something examinable!

But thanks so much! I really appreciate it.
