RINE'S PROFILE

Game designer hopeful. Have designed several tabletop RPGs, and have long wanted to start into the video game space.

My focus when designing is to create challenging experiences that force the player to make difficult choices, and change the paradigm when someone thinks of an RPG.
Binding Wyrds
A modern fantasy game, delving into the shadows of the supernatural.

@Ilan: The cliff in the upper left seems to need some shadows on the right side. Also the part where the edge of the under-cliff dissapears behind it looks odd, but I don't know how you could fix it.

Edit: Also, the fence in the upper left should probably connect behind the house, so it doesn't look like a few fence posts just sitting between the edges.

Review Fantasy IX

That's my major issue personally...I don't want to review games I don't finish, but isn't a review of 'this game pissed me off/is so terrible I couldn't finish/is a broken unplayable mess' a proper review as well? In the week since this started, I've also ran into 'so dull, uninspiring and blegh that when I died, I just closed it', but that feels like a cop out of a review.

@karins: Try not to feel too bad about negative/harsh/scathing reviews. Everyone who posts a game here is obviously wanting to design games, and you need the negative reviews as much as you need the positive. I'd only feel bad about a negative review if I didn't actually finish a game, because then I'd feel like I didn't give it enough of a shot (and not that many games on here are 80+ hour epics anyway).

Copycat Review

I do appreciate the fact that it was made in a day or so, and the work for the art put into it likely took up most of the time for it.

I wish I had any sort of similar talent for art and making it express anything, just wish there was more substance to the game itself ^^;

@Punkitt: Yeah, unfortunately I'm just as much of a novice with edits as I am with art. I'll probably do it for the character videos so you don't have to watch me fat finger through different fights, but then I'll have to work on editing the sound in around it.

I like how your tileset is working out to keep the look consistent, though it seems a bit mentally off to me that walking between one town to the other goes from spring to autumn. I know its a game-y thing that different towns have different theme/color schemes and all, especially for that style, just seems weird in that logical part of my head.

As a note, I'm glad this site has a review process for reviews, otherwise I'd be worried people would churn out a bunch of crap reviews. As it is though, I get a distinct feeling a lot of noticeably extremely short games are gonna get reviewed. I'm already trying to resist the urge to do so, and am working through a longer game at the moment.

Whatchu Workin' On? Tell us!

That depends on what part of an MMO you're trying to emulate. If its the boss fights, FFXII had very MMO-styled long boss fights with intricate tactics, as do a few other RPGs. An indie game on steam, Thats a Wipe! simulates the guild mechanics and people being idiots at times during boss fights.

Not to dissuade you, but make sure you focus on one thing/part of the experience you want to work on.

Three Cheers for the Strawman Review

Yeah, I think it would have worked better if it was explained, and then one use did something other than RPG-ish changes. IE, using a determination item to change depression into sadness, and then using a happy memory to slay it.

Swap in the Middle with You~

Eh, I feel it is part of the event. You could say the same about mapping or events, the other person could easily ruin what you made. Then again, I'm sure tons of us have ruined our own projects by fudging with them too much ^.~

Swap in the Middle with You~

I hope that's not the case, as I'll likely spruce up battles and add interesting mechanics when I get my half, cuz that's what I'm most confident in.
