Something happened to me last night when I was driving home. I had a couple of miles to go. I looked up and saw a glowing orange object in the sky. It was moving irregularly. Suddenly, there was intense light all around. And when I came to, I was home.

What do you think happened to me?

2010 Misao Winners

author=xeilmach
I want to say congrats to the developers of Vacant Sky and Alter Aila: Genesis for breaking excitement into 2010. I also want to congratulate those who have accomplished their completed games or demos as well for the public.

For 2011 and the future, let's not have developers solely go for the next Misao category swiper, but have developers create something from their hearts to just share their talents or experiences to the public and express themselves. I know Vacant Sky and Alter Aila weren't doing that and just concentrating on teling their stories in their own ways, and that's what made them so exceptional.

The Misao may give recognitions to games with extraordinary aspects, but we got to remember that we all each have the power to recognize the greatness in other developer's games. Dropping by to say "Hi, I love your game" may not be a Misao award, but it's more than enough to cheer up and motivate the developers.

Anyhow, I wish all developers and players to look forward to a fun and great 2011.

This is a great attitude to have. Well said.

Why are a lot of us dicks?

I dunno about that. When I first came to this site, I generally searched through the database just looking at review score.

So did I. Every time I bring this up, the response is "no one really cares about review score." I think that's being very naive. Just because you think that's the attitude people should have doesn't mean that it's the attitude that they do have.

But there are so many games here that have no score at all. There is absolutely no way whatsoever to tell how good they are before downloading them.

I mean if you want to separate professionalish reviews from basic ratings that's fine, but not many people want to write that much for every game they play, and I'd rather have a handful of BS along with a good chunk of real votes than have nothing at all.

The good reviews mean nothing when someone can tell their friends to register on RMN and write up a paragraph and a 5-star review and give them bullet points of things to mention. It trivializes reviews and makes the score meaningless (well, even more meaningless than it is now).

Honestly, I think there should be a length requirement on reviews. The ability to give a score to a game is a very influential power here considering it directly impacts the game's visibility and downloads, so it should require a lot of thought.
It's only so influential because it's so rare. If every game had more ratings, then every rating would be less influential. And the end result would be that the trustworthiness of the overall rating would be a lot higher - 40 reviews are a lot more likely to balance out to an appropriate number than 2 reviews. With 2 reviews, it only takes 2 of the designer's friends or 2 people who barely played the game but hate the engine to fuck up the game's score.

It's like on trivia game shows when the contestant decides to Ask the Audience. Some of the people out there are stupid, but by looking at the trends you almost always get the right answer.
It isn't working out so well for RRR. People vote there without ever playing the games. If all they had to do here was write a few short lines, I could see a lot of people making bs reviews just to get their votes to count. The format of RMN is way better, no matter which community you like more.

Indeed. The more lax the review requirements, the easier it is to get away with BSing a review without playing the game in order to affect the score.

I don't mind one-paragraph reviews for games, any info is better than no info. If they're just one or two sentences I can see rejecting them, but... it's absurd to have such epically strict policies that, as Jericho noted, aren't even made public (probably because they're entirely subjective and based almost solely on how much the one submission-approving guy likes your writing or agrees with you). Small wonder people feel threatened by our site.

Why is there a minimum length when reviews longer than that can be rejected for not being long enough?

Like, I am wondering the image of us as some elitist jerks arose because of people who's games got denied instead went to places like RRR and badmouthed us or something, because they were hurt or deflated. And it snowballed from there.

That's a possibility. I can't say for sure, but I think something that contributes to it is that there are current and former RMN members who say the same things about it on the other sites.
