Something happened to me last night when I was driving home. I had a couple of miles to go. I looked up and saw a glowing orange object in the sky. It was moving irregularly. Suddenly, there was intense light all around. And when I came to, I was home.

What do you think happened to me?

If you've already made up your mind, then why did you put up a poll?

[Poll] Game Maker or Construct 2 or...

Well, Unity is free and by far the most powerful option listed. It supports more deployment platforms, too.

Unity has a plugin that works like blueprints. :0 It's called Playmaker. I've toyed around with it a lot, and it's pretty simple. It also has support for a bunch of other plugins so that you can expand your command options.

Having used both Playmaker and Blueprints, there's really no comparing them. Playmaker is not nearly as easy to use as Blueprints and it's a lot harder to manage complex systems with it.

Also you need to buy Playmaker.

I'd probably stick with Unity because of more varied platform support (e.g. mobile)

UE4 supports (probably) every platform you care about.

So if I wanted to develop a PS1-era-esque "2,5D" (3D with limited camera, and sprite actors) or just full 3D j-rpg with instanced battles, should I roll with Unreal or Unity?....

You could easily use either engine for it. If you feel like you're not a skilled programmer, UE4 is probably better due to the Blueprints system.

It's hard to write a general Unity tutorial because you first need to learn C#, and then you can pretty much make anything. Given a more specific problem space (how to make a platformer, for instance), it's easier to write a tutorial. What do we want a tutorial about?

Speaking of which, I wonder when my UE4 tutorial will be approved...

[UE4] Unreal Engine 4 is now free

Okay, tutorial written and submitted. That should be enough to get newbies up and running with making maps.

That sounds pretty neat. But greenhorns like me will need more instruction than that, unfortunately. I don't think Unreal 4 is going to be as easy to pick up and use as say SMBX...

There are plenty of video tutorials showing how to get up and running. I guess I'll start compiling a simple getting started tutorial and go from there. I'll submit it to the UE4 tutorials page.

Dude, Unity 5 is now a feature-complete editor even with the free version.

Anyone else thinking we should have a Unity vs Unreal contest? :D

That would be cool. I suggested a level design event with UE4 because it ships with enough assets to make a map with, whereas Unity doesn't have as much free starter content.

[UE4] Unreal Engine 4 is now free

I was thinking that a good way to start would be with a level design event, something simple to get people accustomed to using the editor without delving into the technical stuff. It ships with tons of free and awesome assets. Basically, make a map of any kind and any size and upload a build where you can roam around it in either first or third person.

Mustaches confirmed for Unity 5

Looks like their big announcement leaked.
