Something happened to me last night when I was driving home. I had a couple of miles to go. I looked up and saw a glowing orange object in the sky. It was moving irregularly. Suddenly, there was intense light all around. And when I came to, I was home.

What do you think happened to me?

Some analysis on Earthbound's opening

I agree with your conclusion, to a degree. The mundane opening certainly adds something to the feel of Earthbound's opening. Just as long as "mudane" doesn't immediately equate with "boring," I think it's all good.
And I think Earthbound definitely failed in that regard. I've tried to play Earthbound so many times but the beginning is so boring that I've never gotten past it.
I will admit that Earthbound certainly isn't everyone's cup of tea and that it has plenty of slow spots. What RPGs would you point to that do it really well in that regard?

FFX and FFXIII both have really bombastic openings that do a great job of hooking you into the setting and characters right off the bat. Also importantly, they throw you into combat immediately while also providing you with ample contextual information that you don't feel like you're being tossed in the water without any reason to care.

Do you people regularly change ratings for past reviews you've done because your opinion has changed about them? Sometimes I do, because some games are slow burners, whereas some lose their charm fast. What about you?

What, can you really write multiple reviews of the same game?

What if you play the game again?

Who's up for a challenge? Here's one: Create a game that gets AT LEAST 4.0000000000001 from nhubi. Any takers? ;p

I have a hard time giving games even 3 stars. A 3 to me means flawless. But merely being flawless does not make it good. The way I see it, a game has a list of positive qualities and a list of negative qualities. Merely having no negatives does not make a game good, it makes a game not bad.

When the flaws outnumber the positive qualities, then that's less than a 3. When the positive qualities outweigh the flaws, then that's more than a 3.

But 5 should never be unreachable. If that were the case, then there should simply not be a 5 in the scale at all. I am fully prepared to give a 5 to a game that is exceptionally good.

In fact, I've played RM games I would have given a 5 to, but none of them have ever come to RMN. Alas!

FWIW, Unreal supports mobile platforms - how robust that support is, I can't say.

UE4 supports (probably) every platform you care about.

I've read contrasting stuff about UE4's mobile support...as someone with a budget phone myself, I'm concerned about resource utilisation and how UE4 may be overkill for the type of games I want to make.

Currently, I'm making a simple shmup in Unity and am really liking it so far, despite how it encourages some...interesting coding practices. I have a lot of catching up to do on stuff like shading and particles, though.

Having used both UE4 and Unity, if you're concerned about performance, you can scratch off Unity. Due to its poor mobile optimization and the need to spin up the Mono VM, its performance on mobile is an atrocity. Most of the time when people are complaining about UE4 mobile performance, is because they still have some VFX/quality settings still configured to desktop level.

My tutorial for UE4 is live. It gets you started from nothing, including installing the engine. It should be plenty to get someone up and started with making maps.

Retail Xbox Ones to be unlocked as devkits in 2015

Microsoft confirmed that retail Xbox Ones will be unlocked as test kits for games being developed in the Windows 10 universal app.

This will happen in the second half of 2015, the console manufacturer revealed at a GDC panel attended by Eurogamer.

ID@Xbox director Chris Charla noted that Microsoft is bringing its self-publishing program, ID@Xbox, to Windows 10.

Of course, self-publishing has always been an option on PC, but going through Microsoft's impending unified app platform has some advantages.

Joining the programme gives developers two dev kits at no charge, and enables support for Gamerscore, Achievements, Xbox Live, Kinect and so on. There are no fees for certification or updates.

Furthermore, you'll gain access to Microsoft's expertise and its gargantuan collection of data. For example, Charla noted that "your launch date is probably as important as your control scheme."

More interestingly, Charla revealed that "the correlation between game length - like how long it takes to beat your game - and how your game sells is non-existent. There is literally no correlation there." Fascinating!

He added that you don't have to take Microsoft's advice, but it's there for those who want it.

Charla boasted that porting between platforms on the universal app is very easy. In fact, Other Ocean ported #IDARB to PC in a day.

[Poll] Game Maker or Construct 2 or...

If you've already made up your mind, then why did you put up a poll?
Cuz It interests me and there are months to change it. The thing with Unity is that I track it on Moddb and its alwaz annoying how there is million new games using it every day. Too mainstream, ya know.

I've always wondered why nobody writes novels with a hammer and chisel on stone tablets anymore. Computers are so mainstream...
