If your game has these words in its title, it's a big red flag
My new game -
The Ultimate Final Dragon Warrior's Fantasy Revenge Saga Quest for the Legendary Demon Sword of Light and Darkness Part III:
Destiny Legacy of the Hero's Eternal Rune
It'll have fewer words in the dialogue than it does in the title.

If it's a spoof of everything RPG, I'm in.
Beginner's Intimidation and High Standards
There is no facts in art, only opinions. There's nothing you HAVE to do in creative work. This doens't have much to do with the topic, but let's get that out of the way.
Beginner's Intimidation and High Standards
I don't know what it really is, but I'd like to think the mission statement of RMN is to foster game making and the development of game design.
In order to do that, you need your newbies to grow and not quit.
So establishing what you know -
A) Dicks will be dicks.
B) Many devs get emotional about their projects.
So you can address this in several ineffective ways.
A) Stop condoning dick comments or cutthroat attitudes towards all projects, especially beginners' projects. There's a time and place for harsh reality, tough love stuff, it's not for beginners. Most people are nice, but the nice people don't really put down the mean people minorities when they see it. Of course you should be ALLOWED to be harsh or impolite, it shouldn't be so enabled.
B) Better prepare newbies for the harsh criticism and dick comments they're going to get. This is just as hard to accomplish, in my opinion, but probably more effective in keeping devs going if you're successful.
In the end, you need your devs to stick around in order to improve and produce games. I know the current staff is all for it and promotes it, I'm not doubting their efforts.
I will say about the popular projects. Most critics are doubly harsh and impatient with popular projects, but those devs are NOT doubly immune to emotional outburst. Some of the biggest dick comments, I've seen on the popular game pages.

If your game has these words in its title, it's a big red flag that it probably sucks:
Title is marketing. Nothing to do with the quality of the game.
your op should be...
"If your game has these words in its title, it's a big red flag that nobody will try it."

^Best post yet, Solitayre. Social behavior is my whole emphasis, not the permission of developers and critics to do what they please.
I must say though, I was mostly referring to quick 2cent comments where the critic has not invested a great deal of time as is the case for a review, and thereby become something resembling a stakeholder emotionally in the project.
It's hard to be disrespectful to the efforts of "deleted it after 6 minutes, what a silly way to begin a story." Which some people think deserves gratitude from the dev.

@ Kentona and LockeZ, I said it's not that common that people are major unhelpful dicks. I wasn't cherry picking to prove that's the norm. I was countering LockeZ's assertion that there are none. And given the amount of criticism thrown around, bad reactions are pretty rare by percentage too. Hell most people are pretty nice. But there's enough to talk about it, hence all these threads about criticism.
The idea that being a dick of a critic should be condoned and the dev should be grateful for dick comments I refuse to accept. Sorry.
It's principle for discussion, not something you can really implement. Being an unhelpful dick should not be condoned. And the dicks should stop pretending they mean to be helpful, when they're clearly not.
LockeZ, if you're going to take the assumption and benefit of the doubt that all comments were originally intended to be helpful, then fine. I am speaking about intentions and not actions.
Let's face it. Every now and then, you get a person who absolutely blows up at criticism. That's major taboo. The community will jump on this person like rabid dogs.
But think about the motivations here. You got a critic (even if this person is not representative of the community) who wants to be a dick about it. Why does he want to be a dick? He feels like it.
Then you got a person who bitches back, emotional rage quit, whatever. Why was that he upset? Because he felt hurt by the comments (even valid comments).
Why defend people's right to be a dick, but not be understanding of people's likely emotional reactions?
Like I says, I'm only arguing principle.

@LockeZ
Doing something that winds up being helpful and doing something with the intent for it to be helpful are two different things.
The mean popular girl in high school who tells the ugly girl that her hair looks like trash isn't saying that to help the ugly girl look better. She's just being mean.
I really can't explain it any other way. If you can't see that, I'm sorry to hear that.
