This 'Alvida' seems familiar...
If you're thinking of One Piece, I've never seen that show. Someone mentioned that to me later.
The Alvida mine is named after is the historical one...
Alvida (aka Alwilda, Alfhild, Alvild) was the daughter of Synardus, the king of Gotland. Her parents kept her locked in her room, and set two poisonous snakes to keep away all but the most ardent of suitors. The most persisant and brave fellow turned out to be Prince Alf of Denmark, and though he passed the test Alvilda's parents were none too happy about the match. Deciding she wasn't ready to be wedded to some stuffy Prince, Alvilda took advantage of her parents' irresolution and hightailed it out of there. She joined a crew of cross-dressing women, but had barely got started in a career in terrorizing the Baltic coast when they came across a crew of pirates that had lost their Captain. They were so impressed by her capable skills that they voted unanimously to elect her as their new leader. With these fresh reinforcements beneath her ruthless guidance, this formidable woman became such a nuisance to the merchant trade that her former betrothed, Prince Alf, was dispatched to bring the troublesome pirates to justice.
No joke.
But that's only her name. Her personality and backstory are a spoof of a different pirate. A male one from an 80's movie.

I also liked that as Raiden we got to see Solid Snake be a bad ass. It was a cool experience seeing him in a box sneaking around, while you go about your business.
Yep.

The interesting thing about Raiden though is that he was more like the mirror of the player. He was trained by VR simulations and had a shallow/insecure personality,
I don't want to play a underachieving college lax bro, who spends his free time making rm games.
I want to play a badass spy. I didn't get to do that for most of MGS2, hence lame. It's got nothing to do with american, or hero, or anything other than badassery.

Wait which one was the one with Raiden, that was the one I played
Yeah okay I meant MGS2
And fuck me, your accurate description of the plot is actually more confusing than my rambling incoherent one
Argh, you've never played the first MGS? Tragic if MGS2 is your lasting impression of it.

I actually think that Arc Rise Fantasia scene was great.
Every Metal Gear story after Shadow Moses was terrible. Ruined the greatest spy movie ever.
You're never really supposed to take Disgaea seriously, so it gets a pass in my book.
I'd have to say what Star Ocean 3 did to its predecessors is what makes it the worst for me.
Though, the fact that Rastan really wasn't Lightning Leon was the greatest.

author=KreadEXauthor=JudeIt's so bad it has been pretty much retconned in the fourth game. Which doesn't fare any better, as far as plot goes.
Isn't the ending in Star Ocean 3 famously stupid?
Also, the entire plot of Disgaea 3 is a succession of laughably ridiculous twists. The worst game of the series, really.

How would you handle multiple learned languages?
Al Bhed sounded extremely silly when spoken. So does that elven speak from lord of the rings.
You might be able to get away with just making an unreadable but decipherable language, so long as you don't have to hear the words phonetically.

Inventory hoarding
author=LockeZ
There are lots of things that should change over the course of the game to add variety and keep things fresh, but I really don't think whether or not you have the correct amount of resources to survive should be one of them :/
Bullseye.
To go further, I'd say that there shouldn't be an issue of attrition from one encounter to the next, especially not with magic. Where's the fun in learning cool magic spells, if you're conserving MP for bigger fights?
I believe in tougher regular fights followed by some total healing (Arc style).
That's for most RPGs. Scratch that no attrition bit completely if you're doing a survival dungeon crawl, ala Lufia 2 Ancient Cave.
Inventory hoarding
Low maximum capacity. Then constant supply and need. You're damn well gonna be using those potions if you can only hold 6 of them, and you're getting lit up, and there's another potion in the next room.
Btw, that comic is legendary.
Gamemaking For It's Own Sake/Creative Expression
What's that phrase? Originality is conveniently forgetting where you heard the idea first.
Now, I don't subscribe to that completely, but let's not pretend that taking notes from professional games is 'uncreative' and that taking notes from other places is 'creative.'
Anyway, making games is a pretty low reward hobby if you don't enjoying doing it. I wouldn't recommend it unless you love making games. Actually, I wouldn't recommend any hobby unless you enjoy it, but some hobbies can give you benefits for elsewhere - exercise and bodybuilding, gambling(if you're really good).

Favorite RPG story and why?
author=Solitayre
I could tell you about who these people were, where they were from, their relationship with the people there, and how they each felt about every other member of the party. A rare feat from the early SNES days. The plot eventually uses this against you, as what seems like an incredibly standard save-the-world plot becomes extremely personal in the game's final hours.
Not nearly done enough in RPGs. This is the highest and most time consuming priority in my project.
Even just giving an NPC a name and a face goes a long way.
Suikoden's 108 characters give you 108 backstories, no matter how little or insignificant. Too bad, only one person ever dies in any game, with the possibility of revival.
Favorite RPG story and why?
The problem with Suikoden 3 was that it was, in fact, a very short story. Basically, 1/3 as long as the length of the game, since you replay the same scenarios from different P.O.V.'s. This isn't a flaw really, it just made playing the story feel unfulfilling at times. "Yeah, yeah, I already seen this. What's next?"
The other problem is that I'll never forgive that awesome opening sequence, making me think McDohl was in the game.
