Portal is Free

Alright bitches if there's still someone out in the world who HASN'T played the best game of last decade. Well... It's now free.

I'll just spend the rest of the topic doing some Portal-loving. Portal is a great example of how it's not the length that matters but how you use it. Portal has probably one of the best scripts ever found in a computer game. With one of the most memorable villains ever as well as some truly great comedy.

Everyone who tries to make their own game can take lessons from the way Portal works. From the script and characters to introducing the player to new elements in the game to level-design and storytelling by showing, not telling.

Portal has all that. (for a deeper look I might suggest the commentary mode where you can get a lot of great insight)

Portal is close to the perfect game. It is a very clever game. It is THE game.

And even though we're all sick of cakes and AI by now there's a reason those things became so big. Because they really. Really. Are that great.

(and even if you're a mac user Portal will be free for you!)

Very Disrespectful

Actually there's a very simple reason you come off as an ass. You created fairly bad topics. They follow the format of "Controversial subject + no content + discuss". It's essentially a kind of baiting. Or at least that's what it seems like. It seems like you want to create discussions about controversial subjects but most people here are sort of sick about that kind of debate on the internet.

Occasionally it's fun to argue on the internet but here most people feel strongly about games or something like that. (might I suggest RMN's IRC channel for real-time weird discussions) Back when we were young and new to the internet we might have cared about what other people thought but by now we're just sick of it.

Add to this then the fact that you immediately take offense and seemingly lack a sense of humour (alternatively you're just new to the internet and don't get the jargong. A couple of weeks of lurking on a forum can give you an impression of what kind of atmosphere there is. This forum has a slightly different atmosphere (where casual name-calling is a sign of affection) than what you might have expected.

Yeah. That's about it. Basically it's a good idea for a newish member to reply to topics for a while to get a feel for a place rather than create a lot of bad topics at once. That way you can build a decent reputation so you can make bad topics everyone will like later.

That's just how it works.

Is there really a God?

No one in this topic has made a good argument for or against religion.

Don't confuse gods with religion. While I don't really believe in gods I do believe in religion.

Engagment Announcement!

the giftMy other friend ended up getting them a big pink dildo as a wedding gift. Well it was a giant penis shaped candle.

To be honest you can't really ever go wrong with a big pink dildo.

Post your desktop!

Look at you all with your fancy toolbars... Classic mode FTW.

So true so true.

http://rpgmaker.net/users/Shinan/locker/minifire.png here's my desktop in September in Vista. (probably posted in another thread since it was in my locker)

And here it is now in Windows 7:

I never change do I?

Would this annoy you?

Yeah it would annoy me. Especially if the beginning was like that. There needs to be very clear goals in the beginning (and also a way to accomplish them). Even something as simple as "Go east and talk to the guy in the town to the east for clues about our predicament".

Yeah I'm referencing Fallout here. It's a pretty open game but in the beginning of the game it clearly tells you "Go east". Of course once you've played the game more than once you know you can go anywhere. But for the first-time player east is where you'll go and there you can go talk to the guys there and suddenly all kinds of stuff will happen.

Consider if Fallout didn't have the go east direction in the beginning. You stand outside the vault looking at a gigantic world map and... then what?

Engagment Announcement!

It's probably a two parter. First you give them what they expect and what they ask for. And then you give the obvious "funny present" that no-one really wants but is always so much fun to give away. What this present is will obviously depend on what they're like. But it can be stuff like a whip and handcuffs, a two person subscription to WoW or a bottle of rat poison.

Are there really only 5 kinds of quests?

post=136902
Depending on how the game is set up, rescue is not fetch. Rescue adds them to your party.

I would say rescue is always fetch or discovery. I still think there's only three basic quest types. (Fetch, Kill, Discovery)

Are there really only 5 kinds of quests?

A variant of the escort quest could be the defend quest. (defend a certain location against attack, on a time limit or other trigger)

And then the fetch quest variant of collection. Where you essentially collect something (pokemon, crops, livestock)

I'm guessing that rescue and fetch is pretty much the same quest actually. As is discovery and escape so we're down to three proper quest types.

Game Gale 2010

There's like ten days left DE. You can just restart in a less ambitious project. I haven't even started making mine yet.
