How long should demos be?
A demo should be long enough to give a self-containing scenario but short enough to make the player want to play the rest.
A good rule of thumb is "one". One as in one level, one village, one scenraio, one town, one mission, one whatever. Of course the best is usually one+tutorial.
Another thing I'd say about demos is that while you should have a tutorial (to teach the concepts of the game) the "one" thing doesn't have to be the "first". Instead throw the player into a scenario that is not the beginner scenario instead take something in the early part of the game but not the "training you get right after the tutorial".
And if you don't have One but instead have Two. Make sure it's two very different things to show off what's in the game rather than two consequtive Ones.
Of course I'd also agree with Darken that you shouldn't really release a demo at all unless you intend to charge for the game. In the case of charging for games demos are the best thing out there. But if your game is free anyway I can't really see a point in having a demo.

Trash The Movie Above You!
There's not anything bad I can say about Dungeons and Dragons. Honestly why do you people keep coming up with such great movies?
Well I guess there has to be something bad... Not enough elf nipple armour.
Gladiator.

Downloading Music Illegally
See what I mean? There goes the majority of my money, THEN WHERE WILL ARTISTS GET THEIR MONEY!? Eventually, artists will have to quit their profession, leaving less musical variety, which would SUCK.Oh yeah. I wonder how artists survived, you know, BEFORE there were records? The record industry is actually pretty young and there were artists before that. At least I think there were artists before that.
In fact if the stuff I've heard is correct backinthedays it was the opposite. "People are getting these records! No one wants to listen to me play live anymore. There goes the majority of my money. WHERE WILL ARTISTS GET THEIR MONEY!?" I believe there was even a huge uproar back then about this very thing.
And to be honest. If you're just starting out people generally don't download your stuff illegally. Not because you suck (which you may do) but because people just don't know about you. In fact once you get a bunch of downloads you know you're doing good because people are actually listening to you.
Of course as a beginning artist today I'd suggest not even leaving the ILLEGAL DOWNLOAD venue open. Instead release a lot of material for free (Creative Commons possibly?) to get listeners and reputation and eventually people who come to your gigs.
The only people who really worry about music piracy are the ones that already are known enough that they have pirates pirating their music. And crappy internet electronica artists in their basement that don't really know how to play music and couldn't perform live if their lives depended on it.
Trash The Movie Above You!
The Empire Strikes back has this huge long sequence with Yoda in that swamp and man it drags on and there's no fucking action anywhere. Since the paralell story follows Han and Leia out on adventures sneaking around rather than fighting cool battles.
I mean the opening on Hoth is pretty great but apart from that there's really very little of value in Empire. There's not even a massive space battle anywhere. And the final showdown between Luke and Vader is a total letdown.
Then there's all the cryptic messages all over the place and the setup for a sequel which means the movie doesn't even end properly. Man. If only the movie had ended on Hoth I would have been happy but damn this movie is so fucking slow. Easily the worst of the Star Wars bunch.

A Wii Rant
author=captainregal link=topic=3560.msg71734#msg71734 date=1240348946This is pretty false. Wii Music has been talked about for ages and they've had their best teams working on it. (The fact that no one seems to like it doesn't mean there weren't effort put into it) I don't know much about Animal Crossing but I do think it's one of the "core series" Nintendo works with nowadays. So I have no doubt they put one of their main teams on the Wii premiere for that.
If you read my original post I was just Ranting about nintendo's lack of support this year. I reiterate, Wii Music and Animal Crossing did not have much effort in them at all. So no matter who they were made for, they are not Tripple A titles
I guess what we're confused about here is "what is a triple A title?"
A Wii Rant
hat is over a year without any Triple A title releases. Not even casual Triple A titles.Wii Fit - May 2008
Super Smash Bros. Brawl - June 2008
And games I believe Nintendo put some effort into that might not have been the hits they were hoping for:
Wii Music - November 2008
Animal Crossing: Let's go to the City - December 2008
That's four couple of A Nintendo titles from last year.
What do YOU like in an RM game?
I tried to come up with something but honestly the only thing I could come up with was "good graphics". And even that doesn't apply every time.
What is your opinion on "Filler"
I don't mind filler episodes if they're good. Occasionally "stand-alones" can be good. I consider standalones to basically be "fillers". Although I guess filler is more negative. But these fillers can give nice little character moments and explore certain themes not in the main arc. Also after a heavy arc-based plotline you need one or two lighter episodes as a break of sorts.
Babylon 5 had a clear format for this. Though I can't remember it exactly. But it was something like a maximum of three consequetive "heavy arc" episodes before you got a lighter one. I also think B5 is a good example because it was made in that era between heavy arc-based TV-shows and mainly standalone series. (Looking back at older TV-series most plot points were resolved in the episodes they happened nowadays nothing is resolved in the episodes instead you just get question after question after question and you can't enjoy an episode unless you've seen five seasons worth of episodes as well as read a couple of spinoff novels. (I'm looking at you LOST))
My favorite kind of filler episode is probably the "day in the life" episode. Where you follow a character during a "normal day at work". The way they're set up usually allows for either light comedic moments or great character moments (the best ones provide both). "Day in the life"-episodes include those that are about "other people visiting". Sometimes an episode will follow the main characters through the eyes of some very minor character we've never seen before or a camera crew documenting what happens in the place with the main characters.

The Wii...any good?
author=iishenron link=topic=3544.msg70995#msg70995 date=1239917850You mean Wii + PC. Where else are you going to get your Total War and Football Manager fix?
Having a Wii + one of the HD consoles will have you mostly set this gen.
(and you don't get that fix from "Total Warrior" or "Football Manager Portable")
Screenshotography
Screenshots should always Show Off something. They are there to be eyecandy and visually interesting. No one wants to see menus (Unless they're exiting good looking menus. Or if the menus are the most interesting/only thing your game has). You should try to "compose" screenshots if you really want to properly show off. Some postproduction on the won't hurt either. Just make the game look as good as possible.
Because I know, when it comes to free games, the deciding factor in a download is a screenshot. I don't care about massive feature lists or exciting story opportunities. When I'm downloading a game I want to see something I want in a screenshot. (Of course to me that means that I don't want to see anything that makes me think anime) If a screenshot isn't interesting I'm not even looking at the featurelist.
I haven't done a lot of screenshotting my games. But the couple I did I picked out a cut-scene and some dialogue. I think it might have been some slightly funny remark. Since my game was a very simple AGS game there wasn't really much else to go on. (If my game had had more exciting visuals I would have picked up the best ones combined with some funny dialogue and an explosion or two. All in one shot)
At least one shot should always be when you're doing something not regular. For example if your main character (or a bunch of other characters) do poses you do not normally see (juggling bombs while standing on each other's shoulders and reciting shakespearean poetry) that's when you take a screenshot. Don't worry if it's a "spoiler moment" because if you're good about it the player won't even know it's a spoiler until they come across the scene in the game "Oh that's the screenshot!"
