Why is RPG Maker stuck in the 20th Century, graphics-wise?
author=Darken link=topic=3974.msg80854#msg80854 date=1245094079Considering the importance of higher ground in the Total War series it's still something that 2d has difficulties with.
Well it could considering Shogun had 2d sprites in a 3d environment.

author=kentona link=topic=3974.msg80726#msg80726 date=1245078393Except for TOTAL WAR that just wouldn't work in 2d.
3D RTSs are less fun than 2D ones, as they are harder to play (and NOT because the AI is better - they are just unwieldly).
On the topic I guess I just don't really see RPGmaker as a 3d program. They have increased the resolution with the releases. Right? So I guess by now you could make games that looked... say... like Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix.
My question is. Why don't you?
Instruction Manual
I like manuals.
With that in mind I like to have a lot of crap in them. On the other hand a simple read me should be fairly simple but I always love it if there's huge amounts of reference material for fun and profit (if the game is good enough to make me want to check up on the reference material). In RPGs, stuff like the basics of the rule system is great (What does each stat do. exactly?. What is the chance of hitting x with y?)
So the game tutorials will show you what you need to play the game and the instruction is for those weirdoes that want to know everything.
(Of course in a readme you have Installation instruction, System Requirements and Known Issues. You might also have controls. After that you can make the huge rest-of-the text. Hardly anyone will read it but those who do will want the stuff that's in there not to be a half-assed rehash of the rather simple explanations that were in the game tutorial)

Sleep Deprivation
I'm not very good at staying awake. I just have a couple of memories of some tougher bits. One was in the army when we didn't sleep for a while instead we marched all through the night (in what seemed like circles, though to be honest I just followed the back in front of me).
Another was last year when I volunteered for a medieval fair-type thing that I combined with a night job (morning papers). That meant I worked during the night (and with my rythm skewed it meant I didn't sleep much before I went to work), got home to eat some breakfast then went straight to the fair to get them orders what to do. The whole day I was around being friendly to kids and letting them ride some sort of strange wooden horse. Then when the first day of the fair was over I had planned to go home and get some sleep. Unfortunately (yeah right) there was a barbeque afterwards with free food and I had to stay with the very friendly people that were there (only for a little while, I thought) and after a tour of the castle (there's some castle ruins beside where the fair was) in the middle of the night I realized I had to get to work.
So off I went to do my rounds again. However like the night before I worked double which meant I got home just about in time to get back to the second day of the fair. (I might have gotten an hour or fifteen minutes of rest there in the morning though I'm not entirely sure) The second day of the fair was much like the last one. Pushing kids around on the wooden horse. When the day was over there was a followup where we had to empty the place of all traces of the fair and clean up and all that good stuff.
It did take a while. Fortunately the following night I didn't have work so I slept all well and good and was back in business.
To be honest in those few days the deprivation didn't seem to affect me much. I believe it was because of all the physical work I was doing. Otherwise I tend to fall asleep nearly everywhere but the fact that I was constantly going about meant that I never really felt tired. Of course the second I stopped and sat down on the grass it took some effort to get up again. It was also in the middle of the summer and when the sun doesn't go down you don't need as much sleep.
From my limited experience in sleep deprivation the only "symptom" I can really recall is a certain numbness in the head. Like if you scratch your head it sort of isn't there but still is. I don't know. There's also the tired floating around feeling. It's a bit like being drunk I guess. Or you know, tipsy or whatever it is called.
I like my eight hours a night.

The RPG difficulty problem
author=gerkrt link=topic=3843.msg77156#msg77156 date=1243448833But what if by making Lulu a warrior you'd get access to a whole new side-story branch unavailable to you if you took the "regular" option. That's the part of giving something back for those that want to play the game a bit differently. (Now I haven't played FFX so this is a general example)
Fixed clases/Flexible clases is only a PERSONAL option, it not make it better by itself. Is only about styles.
Also if i talked about FFX is for their "freedom". I say... freedom of being stupid. If you want to make Lulu a warrior you loose her inital states, the turbo influence, and a lot of more things. This is not freedom, is playing bad, is what i was saying as casual balance.
(In the classic Diplomat vs Warrior example I gave the diplomat might get access to places and people that a "must bash. hurr hurr" character wouldn't. Vice versa a diplomat might not be able to gain access to the sixth level of hell and meet the demon whose arse you can either kick or kiss if you're so inclined)

The RPG difficulty problem
I guess in an RPG the best way to please most is to provide insane amounts of content as well as character builds that frankly suck but get access to neat stuff.
For example, focusing on a fighter character will make the battling through the game easy enough and for the inexperienced player battling is the only option they know of. A more experienced player might choose to make a diplomat to increase the difficulty of fighting but adding experiences when they're able to talk their way out of situations and fighting alternative routes to the otherwise obvious "kill stuff".
Of course it's best to make it obvious in the character creation or manual or something that certain builds will be more difficult for inexperienced players.
This is where the insane amounts of content comes in though, since no one wants to play a difficult useless build without any sort of reward at all. So it's important to make sure all builds are equally viable even if some of them are a tad more difficult.

how strong the characters are no longer has much relationship to how skillful the player is.This is actually one of the definitions of a roleplaying game. Player skill and player character skill should not be the same thing in an RPG. This is why the player character have got stats that determine how good the character is, not the player.
In fact player skill should have as small an impact as possible on how the player character fares in all kinds of situations. (if the character is dumb and the player is smart the character should still be dumb. If the character sucks at fighting the player's insane battling skills shouldn't help. (although the opposite is probably more common :))
